Title: Paint Confusion
Post by: P.C. on Nov 05 08 10:51
I go through this every time I face this situation.  This should be the last time, as there is only one room left in my house with enamel paint.

The confusion is.....I know I can't paint latex over enamel without a primer/sealer.  But now I don't know if I can use latex primer over the oil.

I have a can of Prestige Primer Sealer, Latex Acrylic Paint.  On the can it says....Adheres to Latex AND OIL BASED PAINTS.

So to make double sure, I went to the Prestige paint website, where in their 'Expert Advice' section, they say (after some intstructions on how to determine whether the existing paint is oil or latex)......"........if the paint doesn't come off, it's oil-based, and a pre-coat of oil-based primer is a must"

What to do, what to do.

My guess is, you have been fortunate enough to have probably been painting over an existing latex.  If you were painting over enamel, one washing would put an end to your good luck.[/DIV]

I don't know.....hence the confusion.  But I'm more than a little leary of taking the chance.  Removing paint is 1000 times more difficult than putting it on.   (unless of course you DON'T want it to come off)

I guess the next question would be.....did you ever wash the walls after you painted ?  (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

lol.  I guess that answers THAT question.  So....it really wasn't luck at all....just a well mastered plan.  The walls get dirty ?......move.(http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/3.gif)

You are supposed to wash walls? Really? I give em a quick wipe once in a while if they look dirty or have splotches on em. If they look ok and dont stink.. why fix something thats working?

I have painted directly over enamel or glossy latex (don't remember which) directly with latex finish after good cleaning with tsp solution.

Well, I did a test patch yesterday.....and just washed it a few minutes ago.  It all rolled off like dead skin.  [img onclick="selecte('stern.gif');" alt=emoticon src="http://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/blehnet/stern.gif" border=0]   So....I guess that answers my own question.

Prestige paints should double check their claim of it adhering to alkyd.

Don't see it happening.

I never pay someone to do something I can do myself.  Ever.

I'd buy the wrong shade of white paint.
That's my painting expertise.

Doesn't all paint need curing time, P.C.? I've inadvertantly washed paint off (latex on latex) when it's not fully cured.

I've also removed the tape too fast....and removed the paint.
 I'm a lousy painter.

Yes Lil Me....you are right.....it does need curing time.  And the paint I washed off this morning only had 24 hours....but I also painted a test over a swatch of latex....that one survived the wash.  I think I'm going to have to spring for the KILZ.  Damn.  It's expensive and it stinks.

  * SD.....there are 100's.....probably 1000's of shades of white.

I did a double take after I clicked on this thread. I throught it said Palins Confusion.

Last time we painted a room we got lazy. We taped off the windows and around the doorsills. Covered the carpet then brought in our paintgun we use for painting vehicles and air painted the room. came out pretty damn good.

I love the Russ shortcuts!  Did you airbrush flames on the wall as well?!

P.C.- I think you can buy a 1/2 can of Kilz.  Or I have a mostly full can here that I'm probably not going to use.  Are you wanting to paint this room asap, or can it wait for a few weeks?  My in-laws are coming over the weekend of Nov 22 and I can send the paint home with them.

Lil Me.....how thoughtful.  No, I'm not painting right away.  Company for dinner on Saturday, so it would not be a good idea to tear the kitchen apart....lol

(are you talking gallon or quart ? )

Russ....that is the sweetest offer ever.....but you know, I would be mortified if anything happened to it.
