The Mormons have been forced to come clean about their bogus holy leader...

Mormon leaders have admitted for the first time that the church's founder, Joseph Smith, took multiple wives, some of whom were in their early teens or married to other men.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the essay disclosing Smith's polygamy was posted on the official website of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints late last months. The essay was posted alongside an earlier offering detailing the history polygamy in Utah, where most Mormons live.

The work is part of a series of essays posted by the Mormon church about several topics that have made the faith a subject of controversy, including a ban on blacks in the priesthood that was not lifted until 1978.

The essay does not give a specific number of wives Smith had, but researcher Todd Compton told the Tribune that he believed the number to be at least 33, with 10 of those women under the age of 20. One of the women, Helen Mar Kimball, the daughter of two of Smith's close friends, was 14 at the time of their marriage.

This is why we laugh at religion and religious people....it's 2014 and what is the church doing? Voting on new rules for exorcism.

Yes, exorcism- the magical process whereby some guy in a dress supposedly removes a "demon" from another person's body by chanting and saying magical words.  Yeah, that's what the church is busy with these days.

Seriously, is there really anyone who believes in this bullshit any more??

Bishops to vote on new exorcism rites at annual meeting

BALTIMORE — The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Tuesday is set to debate and vote on the adoption of the first-ever English translation of the ritual book "Exorcisms and Related Supplications."

The idea of exorcism, or the expulsion of evil spirits from a person, gained attention earlier this year after Pope Francis' touch apparently calmed a woman who had been thought by some to be possessed. The Vatican quickly said that the pontiff had not conducted an exorcism for the woman.

The translation of the ritual book is one of five action items up for approval this week at the Conference's annual General Assembly, where 450 American bishops have gathered.

According to a summary, the book is largely about "the rite of major exorcism ... [and] while this text affirms the reality of evil in the world, it even more so affirms the sovereignty of Christ to overcome any and all evil."

The action item was approved for consideration during a June meeting of the Committee on Divine Worship, and includes five modifications suggested by committee members, including:

• Substituting "Zion" for the word "Sion."

• Changing the phrase "rise up to help me" to "arise in my defense."

• Replacing the phrase "who give the forsaken a home to live in and lead captives into prosperity" with "who give the desolate a home to dwell in and lead prisoners into prosperity."

One change that was not approved during this summer's meeting was to omit the clause "with God's permission."

The reason, according to the summary, is that "this appears to be more theological speculation and not settled doctrine, especially since the difference between God's active and passive will is not made clear."

Monday's introduction of the action item did not include discussion, but Bishop Michael Bransfield of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia, expressed concern about priests obtaining copies of the text for themselves and using it without "proper ritual."

The action item requires a two-thirds vote by the Latin Church members along with "recognition" by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Coinciding with the midterm elections yesterday were state ballots proposing the legalization of cannabis.

All three territories where full legalization was tabled approved the measure (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-marijuana-legalization-vote-20141104-story.html), joining Washington state and Colorado.

The narrowest vote was that of Alaska at a roughly 52% to 48% margin (http://www.adn.com/article/20141104/early-returns-show-marijuana-legalization-slight-edge-alaska). Washington D.C. meanwhile saw the vote strongly tipped in favor of legalization, at about 69% to 31% opposed.

Oregon passed its measure by a vote of 55% to 45% (http://www.opb.org/news/article/recreational-marijuana-measure-leads-in-early-oregon-returns/). Buoyed by the news, advocates of legal cannabis are already contemplating the next round of state ballots in 2016.

It Begins: German Bank 'Charging' Negative Interest To Its Retail Customers

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-11-04/it-begins-german-bank-charging-negative-interest-its-retail-customers (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-11-04/it-begins-german-bank-charging-negative-interest-its-retail-customers)

Central bankers today have an equally delusional view of the world. Just three months ago, Mario Draghi (President of the European Central Bank) embarked on his own Quixotic folly by taking certain interest rates into NEGATIVE territory.

Draghi convinced himself that he was saving Europe from disaster. And like Don Quixote, everyone else has had to pay the price for his delusions.

On November 1st, the first European bank has passed along these negative interest rates to its retail customers.

So if you maintain a balance of more than 500,000 euros at Deutsche Skatbank of Germany, you now have the privilege of paying 0.25% per year... to the bank.

Some interesting news about a flaw in Visa's contactless card that lets anyone charge $999,999 to it:

According to researchers at Newcastle University in the UK, the card system developed by VISA for use in the United Kingdom fails to recognize transactions made in non-UK foreign currencies and can therefore be tricked into approving any transaction up to 999,999.99 (http://www.wired.com/2014/11/chip-n-pin-foreign-currency-vulnerability/).

"With just a mobile phone we created a POS terminal that could read a card through a wallet," Martin Emms, lead researcher of the project that uncovered the flaw, noted in a statement about the findings.  "

All the checks are carried out on the card rather than the terminal so at the point of transaction, there is nothing to raise suspicions. By pre-setting the amount you want to transfer, you can bump your mobile against someone's pocket or swipe your phone over a wallet left on a table and approve a transaction."

Someone was trying to justify the daylight savings time switch, and as part of their argument they cited "TV schedules" as a reason. This was the reply from someone else that made me laugh, mostly because it's true:

"TV schedules? Like, from the 20th century? My grandfather read about those in a history book once! People use to schedule their lives around entertainment which was, get this, broadcast to everyone at the same time. Weird, right?"

It's true, the past is a foreign country.

Cops can't force you to unlock your smartphone with your passcode, but they can force you to unlock it with your fingerprint, according to a judge in Virginia.

The decision, one of the first ones to deal with fingerprints and cellphones, confirms the fact that law enforcement agents can get access to a locked phone with legal means if they need to. At the same time a PIN or a password might enjoy more protection than a fingerprint.

Virginia Beach Circuit Court Judge Steven Frucci ruled that a criminal defendant can be compelled to give up his fingerprint and unlock his cellphone in the course of a criminal investigation — because that's just like handing in a DNA sample or a physical key, which citizens can already be legally compelled to give to police.

On the other hand, police can't force a defendant to give up his passcode, because that's considered "knowledge" — not a physical object — and knowledge is protected by the Fifth Amendment. There have been cases, however, where defendants have been asked to give up their password to decrypt their computers, so there no consensus on this issue yet.

Last month Apple and Google announced improved encryption schemes for their mobile devices. Once in place, no other parties, including the companies themselves, will be capable of extracting locally stored data without the user's passcode, even if they have physical access to the device. This was great news for users worried about the troves of intimate data stored on their devices. But for the FBI, it became a flashpoint for a decades-old campaign of fearmongering to convince companies to leave their products intentionally flawed and unprotected.

The FBI and its allies in the Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies have accused tech companies of building roadblocks that hamper police investigations, warning of a world where encryption allows terrorists, kidnappers and other horsemen of the infopocalypse to run wild.

During a speech at the Brookings Institution on Oct. 17, FBI Director James Comey suggested that if companies such as Apple won't build back door access into their products for law enforcement, the government should force them to.

"If the challenges of real-time interception threaten to leave us in the dark, encryption threatens to lead all of us to a very dark place," he said. "Are we so mistrustful of government and of law enforcement that we are willing to let bad guys walk away?"

YES. YES WE ARE. AND YOU MADE US THAT WAY.

South Korean ID System To Be Rebuilt From Scratch After Massive Leaks

South Korea's national identity card system may need a complete overhaul following huge data thefts dating back to 2004.

The government is considering issuing new ID numbers to every citizen over age 17, costing billions of dollars. The ID numbers and personal details of an estimated 80% of the country's 50 million people have been stolen from banks and other targets.

Some 20 million people, including President Park Geun-hye, have been victims of a data theft. Citizens are unable to change their credentials, which are used in many different sectors, making them an attractive target for hackers.

Greetings from Cambodia :)

The weather is actually pretty nice, high 90's but not too humid.

We're all wide awake at 4am after being up for 41 hours lol.

There are worse things than being dead-tired AND unable to sleep while simultaneously having Pol Pot's Revenge, but I can't really think of what that might be at the moment. Not having toilet paper might qualify but I doubt I could have brought enough to matter. Back to the sprayer for me. heh

Traveling to Vietnam: Vietnam must think they're equal to Paris or Copenhagen- it's $120 for a pair of visas to visit Ho Chi Minh city. Holy f*ck. On the plus side, the Vietnamese officials are very polite when they take your money.

Pro Tip: A lot of Cambodians don't think that fake vampire teeth are funny. In fact, they'll get REALLY upset and try to get the airport police to arrest the "shadow demon" who's wearing them because, well, just because.

(I bought a really nice pair of realistic vampire fangs to clown around with here but the local sense of humor is a bit lacking when it comes to that kind of thing. It was all just a hilarious misunderstanding that caused a bit of a stir, *cough* but I didn't get arrested so I guess I can count that as a win.)

Well I think I'll go stare at the ceiling until it's time to get up. Sakha has promised to buy me a shirt tommorrow that says "Shadow Demon" on it. Cheers.

Convicted Felon Dinesh D'Souza: 'I Did Do That And Actually That Was Wrong'

Convicted Felon Dinesh D'Souza admits to being a typical white trash criminal to Megyn Kelly, but he was still pure of heart when he broke the law.

Convicted felon Dinesh D'Souza joined Megyn Kelly to discuss his plea deal on campaign finance laws that also kept him out of a second charge that carried a maximum five year prison term.

D'Souza: "I was facing two charges Megyn, the first one was exceeding the campaign finance limits. The second one was causing the government, the election commission to file a false report and that second charge carried a maximum of five years in prison so what happened is I pleaded guilty to the charge."

So we now know for sure that Dinesh D'Souza, a conservative golden boy is nothing more than a cheap hood. He knew what he was doing the whole time and got caught like so many other white collar criminals. Megyn was equally laughable in this segment when she tried to frame his conviction as if he was pure of heart all along.

Kelly: There was really never any doubt that you did it. Your defense in this case was not, "I didn't do it." It was, "I didn't do it with any intent, I didn't do it with the right requisite state of mind and it's selective prosecution by the government who doesn't go after anybody for this kind of crime.

Kelly is wrong of course because his first defense was that he pleaded not guilty. And let's not forget this nugget:

Cohen also said Long had told government investigators that D'Souza lied to her about the source of the contributions.

He's a liar too, oh my. It appears his whole defense was to get Fox News and any other conservative media outlet to blame the Obama administration for zealously prosecuting him because he's meanie and a critic. He's only been trying to rehabilitate his reputation so that the rubes will see his movies. he must know that conservatives that like his dribble will only feel exhilarated at his conviction because it'll prove to them that the evil librul's did this to poor, goodhearted Dinesh.

And there's also some comedy gold in there from Megyn, who tries to paint him like his attorney did -- a man without bad intentions. Hahahahaha. He knew he was breaking the law to help his friend so what kind of intentions are those?

Prosecutors also said they had obtained a copy of a recording made surreptitiously last October by the husband of a woman Mr. D'Souza was involved with romantically around the time of the donations, when Mr. D'Souza was separated from his wife. In making the recording, the husband was not acting at the government's direction, prosecutors said. The woman, Denise Joseph, was one of the alleged straw donors.

Ms. Joseph was recorded as saying that Mr. D'Souza had told her that if he were charged he might plead guilty, but would initially plead not guilty because that "gives him a window of opportunity to get his story out there," the government said. Ms. Joseph had no comment, her lawyer said.

Reformatting a Machine 125 Million Miles Away

NASA's Opportunity rover has been rolling around the surface of Mars for over 10 years. It's still performing scientific observations, but the mission team has been dealing with a problem: the rover keeps rebooting. It's happened a dozen times this month, and the process is a bit more involved than rebooting a typical computer.

It takes a day or two to get back into operation every time. To try and fix this, the Opportunity team is planning a tricky operation: reformatting the flash memory from 125 million miles away (http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2014-292).

Preparations include downloading to Earth all useful data remaining in the flash memory and switching the rover to an operating mode that does not use flash memory.

Also, the team is restructuring the rover's communication sessions to use a slower data rate, which may add resilience in case of a reset during these preparations.

The team suspects some of the flash memory cells are simply wearing out (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/08/30/nasa_to_reformat_opportunity_rovers_memory_from_125_meeellion_miles_away/). The reformat operation is scheduled for some time in September.

ALS Association Tries To Trademark "Ice Bucket Challenge", Despite Having Nothing To Do With It Originally

from the trademark-shame dept

The whole Ice Bucket Challenge (https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Ice+Bucket+Challenge&safe=off) thing has become quite the story of the month of August, and it's certainly been fascinating to watch how this viral promotion has turned into a massive money raiser for research into ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis -- sometimes called Lou Gehrig's Disease).

If you somehow haven't yet heard of this (and I find it nearly impossible to believe you haven't yet), it's when people get challenged to dump a bucket of ice over their heads and/or give money to charity (though, mostly people do both things).

While there's been some ice bucket challenge backlash (often for silly reasons), just from the standpoint of watching something go viral, it's been fascinating. Of course, whenever things get big, sooner or later lawyers are going to step in and things are going to get messy. It appears that the ALS Association -- by far the largest beneficiary of the Ice Bucket Challenge -- is now trying to trademark the term (http://www.erikpelton.com/2014/08/27/let-the-ice-bucket-trademark-challenges-begin-alsassociation-files-to-register-ice-bucket-challenge-with-uspto/).

<snip>

While the ALS Association has certainly been a massive beneficiary, it had little to nothing to do with anything related to the challenge, other than getting a bunch of checks in the month of August. To now claim a trademark over it seems... kind of disgusting.

Full story: https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20140827/17325528346/als-association-tries-to-trademark-ice-bucket-challenge-despite-having-nothing-to-do-with-it-originally.shtml

Scumbag Of The Week

DC attorney Mike Meier once worked with EFF to fight copyright trolls, whom he called "bill collectors for the movie industry...extorting money" -- now he's joined the trolls as a professional "bill collector," and now he wants evidence of his past life censored and is prepared to send outrageously bogus copyright threats to get his way.

Two anti-troll websites, FightCopyrightTrolls (http://fightcopyrighttrolls.com/) and ExtortionLetter (http://www.extortionletterinfo.com/forum/getty-images-letter-forum/copyright-law-group-settlement-demand-letter-%28attorney-mike-meier%29/msg18608#msg18608), both put up posts documenting Meier's road-to-Damascus conversion. In response, Meier sent letters to the sites' domain registrars, claiming that they had a duty to confiscate his critics' domains under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act -- the DMCA requires such letters are signed under penalty of perjury. He claimed that the excerpts that his critics had posted from his old and new practices' websites, along with their commentary, infringed his copyright. He also claimed that they were defamatory and libelous.

The Mars Opportunity rover breaks previous, long-standing Soviet record, so in yer face, RUSSKIES!!

The NASA Opportunity Mars rover landed on Mars ten years ago, and was not expected to last over a decade in the harsh Martian environment...but ten years later NASA scientists are still driving the rover around Mars looking at stuff. And the mileage has added up.

NASA just announced (http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2014-245) that Opportunity now "holds the off-Earth roving distance record after accruing 25 miles (40 kilometers) of driving."

This month's driving brought the rover southward along the western rim of Endeavour Crater. A manually-controlled drive of 157 feet (48 meters) on July 27 put Opportunity's total traveled distance at 25.01 miles (40.25 kilometers).

The previous record of 23 miles (37km) was held by the Soviet Union's Lunokhod 2 rover which landed on the Moon in 1973. Lunokhod 2, however, only operated for about 4 months before it died.

So yeah, we in the USA may have lots of homeless people and hungry people and inflation and high unemployment and shitty wages and no public healthcare and no savings, but a decade ago we built a kick-ass Mars rover. So there, HA!

Haters be losin', lol.

To all the right-wing haters and fundamentalist screwballs out there, give it up already. Gay marriage is going to be accepted in all 50 states soon no matter how much you oppose it.

It's just like when you nuts opposed interracial marriage- that happened too, despite all your pissing and moaning and dire warnings about how it would destroy society blah de blah de blah.

Seriously, go find something else to focus your hate on. Your battle against Same-Sex Marriage is all but over.

After a federal appeals court on Monday ruled against state gay
marriage bans, North Carolina's attorney general said 'there are
no more arguments to be made' against same-sex marriage.

Atlanta — After a federal appeals court on Monday struck down a gay marriage ban backed by 57 percent of voters in Virginia (http://www.csmonitor.com/tags/topic/Virginia), Roy Cooper (http://www.csmonitor.com/tags/topic/Roy+Cooper), attorney general for Virginia's neighbor, North Carolina (http://www.csmonitor.com/tags/topic/North+Carolina), hoisted a surrender flag.

"There's no argument left" against banning two consenting adults of the same sex from getting hitched, he said. Mr. Cooper, a Democrat, announced that he will no longer defend the state's gay-marriage ban in court.

The Monday ruling by a three-judge panel of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals (http://www.csmonitor.com/tags/topic/U.S.+Court+of+Appeals) in Richmond, Va., binds federal judges throughout its entire Bible Belt jurisdiction: West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The ruling will not legally take effect for another three weeks, during which time the defendants can appeal and demand a stay of the order.

The 2-to-1 decision is important on several levels, with the court supporting a fundamental constitutional right for gays to marry and the ruling coming in a state where half a century ago – in Loving v. Virginia – the US Supreme Court (http://www.csmonitor.com/tags/topic/U.S.+Supreme+Court) said that government can't keep white and black people from marrying. Moreover, it adds to the likelihood that the Supreme Court will at some point take up the issue.
