Breastfeeding protest at H&M

  [img]http://media.metronews.ca/images/d5/28/d6ba924942da83e303fea007b45d.jpeg"]

A clothing store in Downtown Vancouver was overrun today by about 150 breastfeeding women during a noon-hour "nurse-in" to protest a mother being asked to breastfeed in a private fitting room.

Mothers, with babies (and some toddlers) at their breasts and strollers at their feet, crowded into the newly opened H&M on Granville Street.

An organizer of the protest seemed shocked that so many nursing mothers showed up.

"I was thinking five people – that'd be great," said Veronika Polanska. "Ten – that's even better. Fifteen – yeah. Twenty – it's a victory. But it seems to be a little more than that."

If anyone's interested, we're still looking for kids who need orthodontic braces. Call the UBC ortho department to find out if you're eligable.
Community Programs

Orthodontic Treatment
The University of British Columbia dental faculty accepts patients from the general public to receive orthodontic treatment (braces and other appliances) in the undergraduate program.

The ideal age for an orthodontic consultation is between 7 and 11 years of age, before facial growth is complete. The type of patient most suitable for the orthodontic program is someone who requires single arch treatment, (i.e. only the upper arch or only the lower arch) and that will take 9 months or less to complete the active phase of treatment.

Screening or assessment appointments are conducted during the months of January, February, March, and April to select appropriate patients for treatment beginning in September of that year.

The screening appointment is two hours long, free of charge, and consists of a certified orthodontist indicating that "yes" you have the teeth/jaws we are studying and we can treat you here, or "no" you do not have the teeth/jaws we are studying and we cannot treat you here.
It should be noted that we do not provide "second opinions".

If the candidate appears suitable for orthodontic treatment at UBC, the next appointment is for "Records". Records consist of radiographs, photographs and impressions for study casts; all legally necessary for treatment to be worked up. The fee for records is $200.00.

Has anyone ever asked for a raise? I have but it got kinda..... well, messy. At my previous workplace, it was really awkward even though it was stated in a verbal contract that they would give me something at end of a certain period.

So how does one go about asking for a raise so that the outcome is positive and not the other way around?

I think it's a great idea to do this but I don't think it will work. I don't use water bottles as much but there are times when I just need to use one.

  Vancouver councillor wants bottled-water ban

VANCOUVER -- A Vancouver city councillor wants to put a stop to bottled water being available in city facilities.

Coun. Tim Stevenson filed a notice of motion that is set to be dealt with at council's July 21 meeting.

In his motion, Stevenson cites a number of reason why bottled water should be banned within the city:

. Eighty per cent of waste from plastic bottles end up in landfills.

. The delivery of bottled water burns substantially more fossil fuel than tap water.

. The manufacture of plastic bottles generates 100 times the toxic emissions that are produced in the manufacturing of glass bottles.

. The removal of water for bottling sees the water is withdrawn from its source but not returned to its local ecosystem.

. Bottled water is not required to meet the same health standards as municipally provided water.

. The city has to pay several times more for bottled water than it does for tap water.

Ah, the goddess gives birth to twins! A boy and a girl. Aaah, teh heart melts. How many kids do they have now? A billion?

Angelina Jolie gives birth to boy and girl

NICE, France (Reuters) - Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has given birth to twins, a boy and a girl, her doctor at a hospital in southern France said on Sunday.

Oscar winner Jolie, 33, had the twins by caesarean section on Saturday evening at the Lenval hospital on the glamorous Promenade des Anglais waterfront drive in Nice. Actor Brad Pitt, the twins' father, was at her side.

The girl, named Vivienne Marcheline, weighed 2.27 kg (5 lbs) while her brother, Knox Leon, weighed 2.28 kg. Marcheline was the first name of Jolie's mother, also an actress, who died of cancer last year.

The Vancouver Aquarium's 15-year-old Stellar sea lion, Tag, died early yesterday after undergoing treatment for oral cancer.

The sea lion had suffered from oral and dental problems for 10 years before being diagnosed with cancer in the winter. He went through chemotherapy and laser surgery in the spring.

WTH is wrong with people? Now they're stealing an iconic statue from Stanley Park for scrap metal? The sad part is the bronze statue will probably be melted down and sold in pieces. I just hope they'll install cameras there now. It just sucks!!!!

  Metal theft hits park

Police say statue worth $5,000 likely to be sold for scrap

As they posed for photos with a pair of bronze statues, many tourists at Queen Elizabeth Park yesterday seemed unaware that one of the statues was missing and will likely be sold for scrap.

On Thursday, thieves removed one of four statues of the life-size sculpture Photo Session, depicting three people having their photo taken by a fourth.

Jane Brasset, of Port Coquitlam, said that while the theft is sad, its absence creates a natural place for people to be part of the sculpture.

What do you guys think about this carbon tax that's coming in effect? Should we pay for it? I think.... well, we should pay because we do use a lot of pollution. It's only fair that we should pay for it. However, the money gained from this should go (technically speaking) into fixing the problem.

  What are your thoughts?
What is a carbon tax?
A carbon tax is an example of a what's called a Pigovian tax, as advocated by British economist Arthur Pigou (1877-1959).

When an activity has a negative social cost, such as pollution, Pigou argued that it should be taxed. That, according to his theory, provides an incentive to stop the social harm and move to more positive alternatives — a similar idea to "sin taxes" on products such as alcohol and tobacco.

So the idea of a carbon tax is to turn people and businesses away from "bad" fossil fuels and toward "good" clean alternatives. Under some models, it can also provide funds to help combat the wider effects of climate change, with the idea that the "polluter pays" for green initiatives.

In practice, a carbon tax can be:

[UL] [LI]an across-the-board levy on all fuels based on CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions.  [LI]applied to just the businesses that produce carbon emissions, leaving it up to them whether or not to pass costs along to consumers  [LI]directly levied on consumers. [/LI][/UL] Under a "revenue-neutral" carbon tax, any levies that would be extracted from a particular sector — say, transportation — would be returned in the form of a subsidy or tax break.

The tax level is often calculated in terms of dollar cost per tonne of emissions. This can then be translated into a cost on the fuel that emits the greenhouse gases (e.g.: 10 cents a litre on gasoline).

Here's an interesting case about a dying man who is refused treatment by his own family doctor on the grounds of principal. I'm not sure where I stand on this. On one hand, a doctor should do all within his/her power to prolong life and yet if you see someone slowly wasting away (your body being "cut down" to stall infection) is not doing the patient justice either.

  Penny for your thoughts?

Doctor offers to treat dying Winnipeg man after colleagues refuse

A doctor in Winnipeg has agreed to treat a dying 84-year-old man amid a legal and medical row between his family and physicians who say keeping him alive is unethical, a published report said Wednesday.

Three doctors at the city's Grace Hospital have refused to continue providing care to the elderly patient, Samuel Golubchuk, who they say has no brain function and should not be kept physically alive on a ventilator.

But another, unnamed doctor has come forward and agreed to be Golubchuk's physician of record, according to a report in the Winnipeg Sun that quotes a spokeswoman for the city's regional health authority.

That will enable routine care to be provided to Golubchuk and his life support to be maintained, medical officials said.

OMG! AGAIN!!!!!

Fifth human foot washes ashore Another human foot has mysteriously washed ashore in the Lower Mainland.

The left foot was recovered at 10:30 a.m. yesterday in Fraser River off Westham Island in Ladner. It is the fifth mysterious foot that has washed ashore in less than a year.

"The Delta Police Criminal Investigation Section is working with the B.C. Coroners Service to establish identity and is liaising with outside agencies to determine if this is linked to the other partial remains recovered in the recent past," said Delta Const. Sharlene Brooks in a release yesterday afternoon.

Last month, a foot washed ashore on Kirkland Island, also in the Fraser River, while in February, one was found on Valdez Island between Vancouver Island and the Mainland.

In August, two Size 12 right feet washed up on Gabriola and Jedidiah islands.
The previous four feet were all wearing socks and runners.

A message from Orca. Scary.... I'm bringing a piece of magnet with me next time I'm booking a hotel!!

[SPAN]Not sure if hotel management is ignorant enough to do that but we do know that magnetic strip can contain many information, just read on and protect your identity. [/SPAN]

HOTEL KEY CARDS

Ever wonder what is on your magnetic key card?

Answer:
a. Customer's name
b. Customer's partial home address
c. Hotel room number
d. Check-in date and out dates
e... [SPAN style="COLOR: red"]Customer's credit card number and expiration date! [/SPAN]

When you turn them in to the front desk your personal information is there for any employee to access by simply scanning the card in the hotel scanner. An employee can take a hand full of cards home and using a scanning device, access the information onto a laptop computer and go shopping at your expense.

Simply put, hotels do not erase the information on these cards until an employee reissues the card to the next hotel guest. At that time, the new guest's information is electronically 'overwritten' on the card and the previous guest's information is erased in the overwriting process.

But until the card is rewritten for the next guest, it usually is kept in a drawer at the front desk with YOUR INFORMATION ON IT!

The bottom line is: [SPAN style="COLOR: red"]Keep the cards, take them home with you, or destroy them. NEVER leave them behind in the room or room wastebasket, and NEVER turn them into the front desk when you check out of a room. [/SPAN]They will not charge you for the card (it's illegal) and you'll be sure you are not leaving a lot of valuable personal information on it that could be easily lifted off with any simple scanning device card reader.

For the same reason, if you arrive at the airport and discover you still have the card key in your pocket, [SPAN style="COLOR: red"]do not toss it in an airport trash basket. Take it home and destroy it by cutting it up, especially through the electronic information strip![/SPAN]

If you have a small magnet, pass it across the magnetic strip several times. Then try it in the door, it will not work. It erases everything on the card.
