I only learned to enjoy wine (red) about three years ago. Is there a red wine people/white wine people difference anyone can put a finger on? My mother likes white, and I think it smells like something with which you should only wash your face or sterilize dental picks, so I've always thought, maybe at 36, I'm still not grown up enough for white.

I about wet my pants laughing in "Sideways" when the guy threatens to leave if anyone orders merlot at dinner. Because I'm a big baby and I like merlot, it's so safe. And cabernet, and I had a really nice pinot noir last weekend. I'm sure the wine store dude thought I was such a hick -- he asked if I wanted a recommendation and I was like, "Um... I want something that's not too, you know, pointy." He said he knew what I meant and kindly advised me, but probably secretly thinking, You philistine. Give me your $27 and get out of my store.

And I love milk chocolate. Which is probably futher evidence that I'm not yet a grown up. I always wished I was one of those girls who likes dark chocolate and jazz and clove cigarettes, maybe wears a beret and understands abstract art. Alas.
Title: Re: Dark or Light....Red or White
Post by: kitten on Feb 24 06 07:34
I've made it as far as the dark chocolate and jazz.  My late mate was a jazz musician.  I even own a black beret which I only wear when it's really cold out.  But I balk at the thought of clove ciggies and I never did get the point of abstract art, so I guess I have a long way to go.   (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

primefactor....I'm thinking my theory doesn't hold wine....errr water.  If you don't like 'pointy' wine (love that), try some of the German whites.  2 of my faves are the most un-German sounding, but they are not pointy.  Silver Bell, and Golden Eagle.

A white wine I do like is Zinfandel.  I toured a small winery in Northern California, I think it was north of San Francisco, and tried it for the first time there.  I can't remember the name of the winery, and they probably don't make enough to export to Canada, but I don't think I've ever tasted a better Zinfandel than that one.  I even tried a chocolate wine there.  Not that great, but certainly different!

They were big when I was a teenaged Reagan-80s goth girl. I think they still are with the artsy and gloomy kids. I have a weird nostagia reaction when I smell them. They are sort of oily and crackle when you inhale. Which, supposedly, is why they are extra-bad for you.

Ain't that the truth kitten.

I used to have a 'friend', who would try to educate me in art.   I told him just because I didn't have it in me to pretend to like what was approved of by the 'Art Community', didn't mean I didn't have taste.  There's clearly a missing element when I have to be TOLD what I should like...WHY I should like it, and What the artist was TRYING to say.
Title: Re: Dark or Light....Red or White
Post by: kitten on Feb 24 06 08:23
I've known a couple of artists as well as some "avant-garde" musicians that painted abstract art or blew far-out weird melodies.  They tried to tell me that I simply didn't have a discerning palate if I didn't appreciate what they were doing.  I informed them that pretentiousness for its own sake was a waste of their time and mine, and I didn't impress that easily.
Title: Re: Dark or Light....Red or White

You know, I actually think saying I don't like abstract art isn't sompletely accurate.  Some are pleasing to look at , or have just the right combination of colours that may enhance a rooms decor.  (I even use to do a bit of it myself)  But they often only have 'meaning' to the artist themselves and my inability to recognize what it is, doesn't make me any less art savvy as the next guy.

Also, if you can paint it with a roller, it doesn't qualify as art to me.[/DIV](http://www.harley.com/art/abstract-art/images/(rothko)-white-center-(small).jpg)This one is thoughtfully called White Centre.

Never heard or read that theory before. Doesn't seem to make much sense from a nutritional point of view.

Food pairs that've traditionally been enjoyed together (like rice and beans) more often not not have a foundation that can be backed by scientific data.

So my guess is, what you're saying is you like dark chocolate, but you don't like wine. ???

Precisely. I don't drink. If I was to drink, it would be rose (with an accent on e,  don't wanna fiddle with the international keyboard now)

I'm a big dark chocolate fan. Red wine would be on the bottom of my preferences among other wines, if I was ever to drink that is...

I agree. It may be pretty, but is it 'art'? I dunno. Art is indeed in the eye of the beholder, but some stuff is just so 'not art' to me, even though it may be attractive to the eye.

I guess that raises the question, "What is art?".

Or, if you like, "What isn't art?"

Full Disclosure: I have not an 'arty' bone in my body. Stick figures are about the limit of my expertise. If I tried to actually paint a picture the Art Police would come and arrest me for vandalism.

Oh, there is no scientific data backing my idea. And I'm not suggesting they would taste good together.  I just wondered if there was some connection.  People seem to generally like one or the other in the chocolate, and one or the other in wine.  I wondered if it was somehow related.

I don't think I've said anything to you that's 'smiteable' GT.  (I don't even think anything about you that's 'smiteable')  I didn't think I'd said anything to ANYONE that was smite worthy.  Apparently I've gotten under someones skin.

Title: Re: Dark or Light....Red or White

I think people spend too much energy trying to "understand" abstract art. You either take a liking to a piece or you don't, often for reasons that don't become clear until you've lived with a work of art. Painting can be about any number of things from strict representation to meditating on the quality of a line, and all points in between.[/DIV]Have a chat with a pal about a painting or other work of art over a bottle of wine and see what comes out. You don't have to speak in lofty terms to talk about why you like or dislike a painting.(http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/19.gif) [/DIV]And there are tons of hacks out there to be sure. You can usually tell when someone has put a lot of effort into their work.

I agree FC about finding it necessary to 'understand'.  If there were a clear message, it wouldn't require discussion or debate.  The artsy farsty crowd are missing this.  (either that, or it would leave them without a platform to try to impress)  I like what I like.

A lot of the work that I've done I just did intuitively and figured it out later. Of course that was just my interpretation, and everyone else's could be different.

Thanks. Obviously some people think otherwise.

Must be my views on DV, because it was all quiet until I started expressing my views. That's exactly when they started frantically hacking away at the smite link.

I figured since there's no delete key at their disposal here, that's how they're substituting for their neurotic requirements. After all, old habits die hard. And of course the amusing question is: If they love DV so much that they can't bear the sight of my openly talking about all the dysfunctionality in that place, then what the heck are they doing here as registered members?

I guess I should read them instructions for this site ???  ,looks fun though !

before you dig into the chocolat , you eat some niice chicken , white meat or brown hey ?

You like da legs or da bresss  oh mamma ! ;)

So my choice is , for dessert , dark chocolate & an old bottle of rouge ..
