Title: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: Maria on Jul 11 06 03:01
I am considering moving to Vancouver, so if anybody lives there can u let me know how its like...are people nice, how is the weather, is it too expensive, Is everything located conveniently (stores, schools, gyms, mall, etc.). Thanks!!

What do you plan to do here?

School as in University/College? or Highschool?

Are you moving here alone?

What type of area do you prefer? ie. fun?  define fun if that is the case

More info about where you're coming from would help.  Your question is very vague and way too general.  There are so many neighborhoods in this Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) that I wouldn't know where to start.

she's probly my age. If you want to go there like tomorrow you could, just get some skills deemed acceptable by the government and you could apply for PR.

Purelife is right, where do you want to live in Vancouver.

Post by: Maria on Jul 11 06 03:15
Yeah, i plan to go to a good college and transfer to a good university (suggestions) and i am gonna live in an apartment (how expensive is rent) and i dont want to live in a really bad area where i'll get mugged or my car will get broken into...and by fun i mean good clubs, malls, parks, restaurants...
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: Maria on Jul 11 06 03:17
Oh, and i am coming from the bay area...nice place but some parts are a little too dangerous...
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: purelife on Jul 11 06 03:18
Good college/uni recommendation can come from me if you tell me what you plan to study.

Have you done any investigations?  Read any online newspapers?  Read anything about Vancouver?

  There's so much to say.
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: Sportsdude on Jul 11 06 03:19
UBC and SFU are the big ones. Crime is pretty low (by american standards) but property crime is pretty high (due to downtown eastside). Rent is just like any other west coast city $$$ so since you're coming from Cali I doubt it won't shock you as much as it will me. (midwestern boy in me talking).
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver

If you can ever come and visit, do so before you decide to make a drastic move like this.

Ah that takes the fun away. (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/4.gif)  Just kidding, yeah before you move check out the place first.

Post by: Maria on Jul 11 06 03:25
Well, i have done online searching and visiting wont tell me what goes on there on a daily basis...thats why i want to get opinions of people who live there..

i plan on studying law...and i probably will come back to the US after college (not sure yet), its just that i want to be away from the distractions in the US and focus on school but have fun at the same time...

The thing is i dont know that many areas in vancouver so i cant say exactly where i want to go...i heard west vancouver was nice but too many snobs...

btw sportsdude, how old are u? if u dont mind me asking..=)

Kwantlen College University is a very popular college along with Douglas College.

Go to the individual city's website.

In google, type:  City of Vancouver/Burnaby/Delta/New Westminster/North Vancouver/Richmond, etc and you can see the City's website to get more of a feel.

You would probably prefer the kitsilano area or downtown area but living expenses are really high.  A bachelor suite starts at around $800/month and one bedroom is at around $1200.  Then you have to buy furniture, pay deposit, pay for gas, medical, phone bill, food, travel....the list of expenses is endless.

Oh, i see what you mean...is it easy to find a job in those places u named? Do you know about the average hourly salary?

Oh and thanks for the website information, i'll be sure to look at those sites..

soon to be 20.

Well if you want know what the city looks like (let's say tomorrow) without going to it a couple tv shows use the city. On WGN at 12pt weekdays Da Vinci's Inquest is on its about Vancouver. But it won't be a pretty picture of the town. The other is Smallville.

Check out the local newspapers/media if you want to see whats going on

I'm looking at the website and its great...its really helping.

I have a kind of a personal question to ask and if u dont want to answer, i totally understand...

Where do u live and in general, are u happy with where ur living? Do u have a good job that pays all ur expenses and do u have fun because i think only the residents of vancouver know how its like to live in vancouver..so if i can get an idea...but if its too personal, thats ok because the website is helping out a lot.[/DIV][/DIV]

If you want to know where I live click on my profile. Am I happy living here (ah the answer would be a big NO) where am I going next? Seattle for 4 years then to Vancouver for law school and want to take my bar in BC so that means I'll have to live there. Plan on becoming a citzen of Canada by 2015 just before I turn 30.

oh yeah its set in Canada. Lex's mansion is a castle in Victoria, the farm is on 0 avenue at the border. The talon is a place in Cloverdale, BC. Central Kansas A&M is the UBC Library, Met U is also UBC.

Here's the website that tells you where everything is:

Ohhhhh....sportsdude, u live in the US, I thought u lived in Canada!! Saint Louis, Missouri....i heard that is one of the most dangerous cities in the US, must be bad...well its cool, i'm planning on studying law too so if i end up moving to canada, we might go to the same law school, since we are the same age....=)

I used to watch Smallville more when Jensen Ackles (Jason Teague) was on there, he was hot!!! Lana Lang (kristen kreuk) is really pretty too.[/DIV]
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: Sportsdude on Jul 11 06 04:11
Its Kristin but thats okay. Purelife isn't a big fan of hers.

Yeah St. Louis is pretty bad. Lots of crime/urban decay/segregation/racism. The Canadian equivalent would be Winnipeg.
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: Sportsdude on Jul 11 06 04:14
for example North Saint Louis looks like a war zone.

Ain't it lovely. AHHHH HOME SWEET HOME!!

Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver

North Saint Louis. Saint Louis since the begining of time it seems has been a de facto segregated community. The black/vietnamese (why the vietnamese who knows but there influence is big cuz all you see on the north side is chinese places I think they got along well because the gangs that run that part of the city got along.) Anyway the blacks always lived in the north part of the town and there was always this line (forest park) that black people would not cross and the white people would not cross. The white community (itialian, polish, german, french) lived in the south of the city. Thats the nicer area. Its never changed and still won't. White people use to live in North Saint Louis County but they moved out and moved to a nieghbouring county because black people started moving in. This is called white flight. I'm white grown up in the rich part of the county but my roots and cultural perspective is in North St. Louis County. Went to a mostly black high school in the city. Had racial slurs thrown at me because I went to school at a predominantly black school.

Wow, that sucks....i had no idea....i'm mixed...my dad is from spain and my mom is german and italian but i look mainly italian...is that why u want to move to seattle?
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver

A school there.
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: Maria on Jul 11 06 04:29
You should go to a school in Cali...to a community college and transfer to one of the UC's...some parts are really nice but i'm getting tired of living here cuz i have lived in the bay area for 19 years...but i heard it was better than seattle...
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: Sportsdude on Jul 11 06 04:31
Nah. Its too nice and sunny there. Rain and crappy weather fit my personality. Plus I like the area and its a keyhole to the rest of the world (Norway).
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: Maria on Jul 11 06 04:33
The bay area...nice and sunny??? I think ur thinking about the LA, San Diego area...its really cold in the bay area, especially san francisco...
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: Sportsdude on Jul 11 06 04:35
Seattle doesn't have the baggage SF has plus when an earthquake happens that city is going into the bay because its poorly designed.

another good site to check out is...

  [A href="http://www.tourismvancouver.com/"]http://www.tourismvancouver.com/[/A]

if you play six degree of kristen kreuk, i actually know someone that knows someone that knows her.

i think the best thing for you to do is come up here for a visit. im sure if you post something on craigslist looking for a tour guide, you will get lots of offers from people willing to show you around town.
Title: Re: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: purelife on Jul 11 06 09:11
You're going to get a lot of creepy guys responding to your ad eager to take you out on a tour for "you know what" in exchange!

Believe me, I had learned my lesson.  I wasn't looking for a tour but was looking for a cheap accomodation in exchange for bartering my service of casual house cleaning, garden work, office work, etc.  LOL, that was a mess.

Another great site that you'll love, Maria is www.vanscape.com.  SD, I think that you'll like it too.  You'll get to see how Robson Street looks like because Robson Street is a famous street for SHOPPING!  It'll give you a feel of how downtown Vancouver looks like.  Enjoy.  :)

That's my plan SD.  And when you do decide to do that and I have some time, I will definitely show you around Vancouver.  I like being the tourist guide.  I like to see how excited people get about things in Vancouver that I would probably overlook and not even bother to care.  I like a fresh outlook.  (//forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/14.gif)

Well it all depends obviously on your work schedule and mine. Sometime when its not raining. Because I went to Seattle during Spring Break this year and it only rained one or two days but it was mostly cloudy.

No, haven't been to the Bay area or California for that matter. Seen everything east of the mississipi plus arkansas, louisiana, texas, kansas, oklahoma, colorado and visited Washington State for a week this year. Trying to warm up to California but everytime I turn on MTV it makes me not want to go there.

Free speech!  People here speak their mind........whether its politically correct or not.  Remember Barbara Lee...she was only the lone vote against the Iraq invasion!.....thats why I believe you would appreciate the Bay Area.  We have UCB, Stanford, 3 state universities, private colleges, numerous law and medical schools....making this region the most tolerant in the US

Didn't Wellstone and Byrd vote against it? Wellstone would have but he died. I know Byrd did.

SD, the bay area is nothing like MTV....its a very nice place...all the stuff that u are talking about only happen once in a while and only in some places, the bay area is a really cool place to live in, its close to everything and very safe...its just me...i like exploring new places and for some reason vancouver is one of the places i want to try out for a while. I'm thinking of coming for a quick visit just to get an idea but i am for sure moving. Thanks everyone for all ur help...i really appreciate it!!

Oh and btw, in case u guys were wondering why i kept posting that random girls pics up...its because 3 different people said i kind of resemble her and ever since then, i've been watching all her movies and looking at different pictures to see if i really do look like her. I personally dont think so, she has a kind of exotic look while i have a modern, regular look like any other girl...i've been getting people's opinions on how she looks so i know if i should be flattered or offended...lol...i'm not gay or anything, not that thats a bad thing..=)

You're very welcome about those links.  I'm glad that you found them useful.

Oh, now I understand why you posted those pictures.  You know what Maria, you are who you think you are.  What I mean is that when you see yourself as beautiful, many people will think the same way.  It is certainly flattering to have people tell you that you look like so-and-so celebrity who happens to be good-looking but you are unique and nobody else (well, maybe that's not true) can have the same features as you.

For example, I was told that I look like Tia Carrere by a friend.  I then mentioned this on DV (long story) and all of a sudden Orca (who has met me and is from DV) says that I look like her too.  Personally, it's a compliment to be compared to Tia because she is very beautiful.  I never knew who she was until my friend mentioned it.  I see some resemblence between Tia and I but overall, I'm happy with the way I look and only took it as a compliment nothing more.
