Post by: purelife on Oct 26 06 12:13
If you know any good eats around the area, please share.

Here are a few that were mentioned.  (Umm, the purpose of this thread is for me to keep track of the good eats, hee hee... just kidding) *wink*

  Weird Al posted:

Here's another great place in that genereal area, Crave at 24 & Main.   [A href="http://www.straight.com/content.cfm?id=20259"]http://www.straight.com/content.cfm?id=20259[/A]

  Russ's Thai Recommendation:

I actually went to a Thai place yesterday that I have been going to for a while. BEST Thai place I have been to. The cook there used to cook for the king of thailand. The place is also the only place in canada that meets certain thai decoration standards.

I agree! Antons and Stephos are the best! Still have to find a good dim sum place though (not too expensive but lots of variety)...any suggestions?

Friends of mine from mainland China always speak highly of the Fortune House in Metrotown (or is it Eaton's Centre) mall. Good, clean and consistent. I'm not a dim sum fan really, but I've been there and they're fine.

Pink Pearl on East Hastings is one of the best dim sum places.  My mom has been to the Fortune House in Metrotown and said that their dim sum isn't as great as it was made out to be.  The one called Pink Pearl is the better one.

When you go to Stepho's, Russ, make sure you try the Roast Lamb.  It's $9.50. It's the best!  Don't bother with getting appy's.  You won't be able to finish your meal if you do.

Annapurna is in the Entertainment Book.  I liked their authentic chai tea.  You've got to try that as well if you're into homemade Chai tea.  I had their spinach tofu dish and that was excellent.

  Yeah, it's Memphis Blues.

Great thread, purelife!!

I don't know if I would recommend Samurai Sushi. I mean, the portions are huge but the quality is questionable. The two times I was there, I found the rice to be poorly made and the wait for your food in that cramp place unbelievable. Still, if you want something filling then Samurai Sushi is for you.

My ultimate favorite Japanese Restaurant will have to be Tomokazu on  W. Broadway for all-u-can-eat. There's a wide variety of raw sashimi if you're into that kinda stuff. Another excellent restaurant is Fish on Rice, Kingsway - they have a wonderful selection of robata/grilled stuff.

My favorite dim sum place is Kirin Seafood in Richmond. Excellent dim sum and worth the price.

For cheap, Big Lai, Kingsway is ok but the service sucks. Another alternative is trying the dim sum at T & T, really cheap for under $2.00.

I <think> I have been to big lai on kingsway. It was somewhere along kingsway.

As for Samurai sushi, I have heard that from a few people. but at the same time a number of us like it. I think its great.. I suppose I can take it off my post if a few people want me to?

Leave your comments there for all to read. That's what make this a wonderful forum as we all have different opinions and likes.

hoohaa?

I agree its open for everyone, I just thought I would offer, wasnt too sure how close knit this board is/was.

I asked my girlfriend for some input on what restaurants she thought was good and read her the list so far. She hates Samurai Sushi, and memphis blues.

i never did get what the big deal about stephos was. yea, they are cheap and the food is good, but i dont know if i would line up for it. most greek food taste the same to me.

antons on the other hand is damn good.

if you are in the broadway & cambie area, go to sha lin noodles. if it is good enough for rachel ray, it is good enough for me.

Stephos is fantastic because the food tastes really fresh, you get huge servings and its really inexpensive. I almost always get the calamari dinner, you get greek salad, rice, roasted potatoes and a TON of squids, lightly battered and tender...consistently. And its under $10! And its enough for a meal and a half (lunch the next day). There is a greek restaurant in Edmonton that is always touted as the best in town, they charge you for tzatziki and their meals are all over $15 at least!!! If you want to eat in at Stephos, get there around 4:30, not much later. Even the calamari appetizer is a mini feast, i like a restaurant that doesnt try to rip you off. Their takeout is really fast and just as delicious, take it down to the beach to eat. Love that place, have been going there for years.

I've been to Stephos 3 times in the past summer when we finally checked the place out.  From those 3 times, I've only ordered the roast lamb meal.  Mmmm....love lamb.  If you were to buy the roast of lamb that size at a store, it'll be double the price of the meal.   They must buy the lamb for cheap.  Their portions are HUGE that I don't end up eating dinner.  Yeah, be there before 4:30 and you'll be fine.

For fish n chips, you must go to Cockney Kings in New Westminster.  They have the BEST, imo.

Sha Lin Noodle..... yeah, been there. Tried it once. It was not too bad. Noodle made fresh and yes, I saw that Rachel Ray segment on the Best of Vancouver Eats. I don't think it should be nominated for the very best but hey, it's a good experience to see the noodle being made right in front of you.

For Malaysian, I recommend Banana Leaf on W. Broadway but only for the lunch special. If you go with a group of six or more, they automatically add tip to your bill. Not to mention the portions are small. Lunch special is great though. Avoid the one on Denman. Crappy place.

Tropika, Richmond is alright too but they got rid of their lunch special. Sucks. Pretty pricey for Malaysian dishes. I've yet to try the Kedah House on Marine Drive... apparently they have all-u-can-eat Malaysian.

Me and Ed's pizza on Kingsway near HiGate Plaza in Burnaby has the best pizza I've ever had.  You can create your own pizza with unlimited choice of toppings.  They are also in the Entertainment book for a half off of pizza.  Great deal.

Another great place is

  Afghan Horsemen on West Broadway

[A href="http://www.afghanhorsemen.com/"]http://www.afghanhorsemen.com/[/A]

I went there for a company function and their Afghan platter for two was absolutely delicious.  YUMMY!  They make the best fried potatoes.

I actually went to this place a little while ago for dinner with my gf's dads 69th. It was pretty good. You can get a dinner for six for like 18 bucks a person? And you are pretty full with a lot of different dishes to try. The Tiger Beer reminded me of Singapore, just alot cheaper than there lol.

Thanks puresexxylife for bumping this thread!

As for lineups, I know I sound like a fool or ingrate.. But I dont do lineups period. I will make reservations for a place if I must, but If I go somewhere and have to wait for more than 5 minutes I walk. I do like things like dineout Vancouver and the Entertainment guide, Ill use them moreso to try new places. Theres too many other places to eat and my time is worth more than that to me. I dont care how good the place is, if its good they should expand, if they dont I will spend my money elsewhere and they dont get it. Im not cheap and I can afford pretty much any place I want to eat.. so Im not willing to waste my time waiting to pay.
