I was just looking at one and they are cool but i think for the cash the other item is better. Why would you not buy one?

Oh, a whole host of reasons. The lock-in, Apple's dictatorial stance on what they allow on their products, their arbitrarily unfair treatment of developers, the lack of Flash capability, the fact that it's loaded with DRM by design, etc etc etc. For some people it's exactly what they want, but not me.

There will be lots better devices that will be more "open" appearing soon. If I ever buy a tablet/pad device it'll be something more useful than an iPad.

I will admit. I dont have a clear understanding of all the flaws you put there.

But I think Im going to be getting one soon. Mostly for e reading so when I travel I dont have a duffel bag of books. I wont be using it for its full potential, but from my research alot of e readers go out of style quickly.. while apple to me will be around for a while so I can buy and keep using my library.

  Unless you have any suggestions?

Simply put, they exercise waaaay too much control over what you can do with the hardware you bought.

I don't, not yet anyway. I haven't really researched tablet/pad gadgets because I'm not planing on buying one anytime soon. Overall, a lot of people are happy with the iPad. And there are some who aren't:

Personally I'm not a big fan of the author of this rant above (he's a bit of a self-promoting, I-know-more-than-you blowhard to say the least), but he makes some good points.

If I had the money, I would get anything but the Ipad... I do not like being locked in to certain software or productsIi enjoy freedom to use what I wish as I wish. Xvid over Divx for instance. Mp4 over mp3 Ogg over wav  And lets not even start on wmv asf...

Another reason I'll never buy an iPad or iPhone. Like, there's no way this could ever be abused, right? Not by stalkers or marketers or the government, oh no. Never. C'mon, we're Apple, trust us.

If you  install it, you "agree" to allow Apple to collect precise information  about your location in real time and use it, sell it, or give it away.  Apple promises that its location data is "collected anonymously in a  form that does not personally identify you." Of course, AOL thought that  the search data it released was anonymous and didn't personally  identify people, either. I don't own a cell phone

All Cellphones have that  ability now.Just try and buy a new cellphone with out it.  It can not be done all New cellphones on the market have the ability to know where the user is to with in 6 feet. They can also be turned on remotely. Sneaky employers can actually use them to eavesdrop on there employee's.

Technology. Just what are they actually doing with it. Well for starters they are turning us into mindless puppets, anything else is just fringe benifits.
