I'm of the opinion that DIY carpet cleaning is better than none at all.
We don't have carpets right now, but we used to rent the Rug Doctor machine from Safeway. It's about $20 plus the cleaning solution.

Well then, I must suggest that you probably don't understand carpet cleaning, and that's okay. Please trust me with this claim:
You will have mostly just pushed the dirt in, and made it all wet. These machines don't suck it up well enough, that's why they are cheap, compared to professional. Can you say MOLD!
Now if you don't, there is an easy way to test it. Go rent some $20 POS Safeway machine, pay for some $10 consumer low-grade carpet cleaner soap, and DIY. Then, hire a reputable professional to come and clean your carpets. Be sure to look at the water sucked up by a real machine. This will proove my point.
Remember, carpets are designed to trap dirt. If you don't clean them properly (professionally), you should really pull them up and have hardwood or lino, etc.
Thanks, and have a nice day!
