Why should Australian taxpayers be responsible for expensive-to-treat disease(s) coming in from foreigners? Yes, there can be special cases, but Australia can't take care of everyone. The PM is trying to protect his people here (some might call it selfish), and at the same time the taxes that would have gone to treat the infected immigrants could go towards improving their hospitals, schools, etc.

It is also election year in Australia and Howard needs all the points he can score right now.

  Aussie has many stories of penniless migrants who came here and did well. We support a fair go however we have to draw the line somewhere. We simply can't support the world.
