Isn't it scary how Health Canada would let something like this slip through? No restriction on the content of mercury in your cans of tuna until the media tested the cans? Now all of a sudden, Health Canada is suddenly on the defense, saying don't eat too much canned tuna. *eyes rolling*
Health Canada advises specific groups to limit their consumption of canned albacore tuna
OTTAWA - Health Canada is expanding its consumption advice related to mercury in fish to include advice for specific groups on eating canned albacore tuna.

While Health Canada has a standard for mercury in fish that is among the most stringent in the world, occasionally some fish products may exceed this standard and therefore Health Canada has provided consumption advice for some groups. Today we are updating this advice. However, Canadians can rest assured that there is no reason to stop eating canned tuna.

Data collected by both Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency over several years have shown that levels of mercury in most canned tuna are well below Health Canada's standard. Levels in canned albacore tuna are higher than levels in other types of canned tuna, but are generally below the standard as well. Health Canada's standards for mercury in fish and consumption advice are based on overall dietary exposures; occasional consumption in excess of the recommended amount will not put the average consumer at risk.

As a precaution, Health Canada is providing the following advice.

[UL] [LI]Women who are or who may become pregnant, or who are breastfeeding can eat up to four Food Guide Servings of canned albacore tuna each week. One Food Guide Serving is 75[ABBR title=grams]g[/ABBR], 2 ½ [ABBR title=ounces]oz[/ABBR], 125 [ABBR title=millilitres]mL[/ABBR], or ½ cup.  [LI]Children between one and four years old can eat up to one Food Guide Serving of albacore tuna each week.  [LI]Children between five and eleven years old can eat up to two Food Guide Servings of albacore tuna each week. [/LI][/UL] It is important to note that canned albacore tuna is not the same as canned light tuna. Canned light tuna contains other species of tuna such as skipjack, yellowfin, and tongol, which are relatively low in mercury. Canned light tuna also tends to be lower in cost relative to albacore tuna. Based on lower mercury levels, Health Canada does not consider it necessary to offer any consumption advice specific to canned light tuna.

Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide recommends at least two Food Guide Servings of 75 grams (½ cup) each week of fish. Choose fish such as char, herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines and trout.

Health Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, will continue to monitor the levels of mercury in fish available for sale in Canada and will inform Canadians about any changes to its advice related to fish consumption and mercury.

Always end the name of your child with a vowel, so that when you yell the name will carry.

I rarely buy the albacore, so I'm not too worried, but I hear what you're saying.  It's a little unsettling that this can slide under the radar.

I dont eat canned fish.

Speaking about mercury, who here has played with some in your hand?

We found a container of mercury when cleaning up the garage and found some of my grandfathers old tools he used for plumbing.

So my dad opened it and let my brother and I play with it in our hands.. as we sat around the kitchen table. My mother came in and took our new toys away from us, we only let it spatter on the table a few times. lol.

Its a real neat thing to play with.

I hear only cilantro can get the accumulated mercury out of the brain. Don't know how true that claim is, but I do remember making cilantro based dishes and vegetable cocktails when I first heard about this 15 yrs ago.

After a few days once I saw cilantro coming out of the other end (and not necessarily too gently either) I knew I had gone too far.

That's terrible, Russ!! One NEVER plays with mercury if you value your life. I know full well the dangers of mercury because of my line of work. We disposed mercury as a hazardous material. So don't do that again!!!

As for mercury issue in the dental field, I'm with the college. There has been no conclusive link to mercury poisoning as yet so for now it's ok to use. I have amalgam or silver fillings in my teeth and the do not bother me.

With the case of cilantro or Chinese coriander, I've never heard of this claim before but hey, if you're not allergic to it and believe it will help, then eat as much as you want. I love this herb and use it a lot in my cooking.

I played with mercury as a kid, too.  The grade 5 teacher passed a bead of mercury around the class for everyone to examine!  Of course, I also broke a thermometer once and didn't tell anyone because I didn't want to get in trouble.  I cleaned it up with a kleenex and threw it in the garbage can.

Lol, yeah we were told all about the dangers of mercury. Afterwards. My dad still contended that he played with mercury all the time as a kid, and theres nothing wrong with him. My mother the nurse was overreacting. Well, she reacted to that comment for sure.

We were alot younger at the time. I think I was 11 and my bro was 8.
