Totally with you Russ. I avoid political people as friends, especially the indoctrinated types. They usually can't see past my nationality or their own views as that's all they know. It's quite amusing. If politics is anything, most of my true friends/buddies are apolitical/not indoctrinated/don't judge because of something silly and come from all stripes. lol
I think it's more social class in how they see themselves. Most of the people I don't get along with see themselves as 'intellectuals' while my friends are just regular people trying to do something in their life. I mean, yeah my social group isn't your average social group, but then at the same time, I've got buddies whom I go to BC Lions games and drink at east side pubs etc. In life you need a mix.
Two of the new guys are engineers, they still have that "I expect to make this after university" outlook. It's the entitlement that comes with it that annoys me. Yeah, I want to go into something that requires grad school with a median career average salary top that these engineers 'expect' right after university. They can live their life, I'm happy with mine. It's not how much you make, but if you enjoy doing it. Clearly they (last year's group) didn't enjoy it, as they went into law.
The problem with the last year group was that they were in their words "first wave Asians from china after the crackdown, overachiever, 160 IQ minimum, kids who like to do gourmet cooking, photography, everything." They were intimidating to say the least.
Society seems so dead set on salary and 'you must go into science.' etc.
If I went into science, my life would be of taking water samples of streams. Not something I find thrilling.
