That is an excellent idea for most people, but many of the older generation don't have computers or even understand how to use one. Using paper cheques is the only way for them to pay their bills. I find it easiest to have automatic withdrawal for all my regular bills, and possibly write two cheques a year. Oddly enough, Reader's Digest doesn't have a way to pay subscriptions online. I actually had to send them a cheque.
That's a good point Kitten....and I'd considered that too. I don't think that just writing a paper cheque is the issue.....it the printing the bills on paper, putting them in paper envelopes.....same process back, etc. But even payments by phone would take care of a great deal of the issue.
If they can program these blasted call centers to phone your home by computer to sell you everything under the sun, they can do the same thing that would notify that your hydro bill is ready.
Even if it's not feasible for all, for those that are in a position to do so, it would obviously have a huge impact.[/DIV]
