If every home in the United States payed their bills online, solid waste would be decreased by 1,600,000,000 tons each year

I'll give it to you SD.....in spite of your 'partial answer', I think I know where you were going with it.

Well, there's a downside to everything.  I'm sure it would be tough on all concerned, but they can get a new job.......we can't get a new planet.

Personally I would prefer to see them make junkmail illegal.

A 'community' website for posting flyers and sale offers etc is a perfect alternative.  I don't know about you, but for me, junk mail goes directly into the recycle bin.....I don't even read it.  It makes me cringe.  I would be more likely to look up weekly sales and events online than read the junkmail.

I like that Sears catalogue is on disc. Firstly, it takes up way less space in my home and has got to be tons and tons cheaper and more ecologically friendly that 500 glossy pages of stuff that will be history in a single season.[/DIV]

That is an excellent idea for most people, but many of the older generation don't have computers or even understand how to use one.  Using paper cheques is the only way for them to pay their bills.  I find it easiest to have automatic withdrawal for all my regular bills, and possibly write two cheques a year.  Oddly enough, Reader's Digest doesn't have a way to pay subscriptions online.  I actually had to send them a cheque.

That's a good point Kitten....and I'd considered that too.  I don't think that just writing a paper cheque is the issue.....it the printing the bills on paper, putting them in paper envelopes.....same process back, etc.  But even payments by phone would take care of a great deal of the issue.

If they can program these blasted call centers to phone your home by computer to sell you everything under the sun, they can do the same thing that would notify that your hydro bill is ready.

Even if it's not feasible for all, for those that are in a position to do so, it would obviously have a huge impact.[/DIV]

Most junk mail goes directly into the recycle bin for me too.  Credit card and loan offers, I sent back in the prepaid postage envelopes that came with the offers.
