WASHINGTON
The government warned diabetics today to watch for counterfeit versions of test strips commonly used to monitor blood sugar levels.

The Food and Drug Administration says the test strips were distributed nationwide but primarily in Ohio, New York, Florida, Maryland and Missouri. The phony test strips are for use with various models of LifeScan's OneTouch brand of blood glucose monitors. LifeScan is part of Johnson and Johnson.

The FDA says the counterfeit test strips could give incorrect blood glucose values, leading patients to take too little or too much insulin and suffer injury or death.The agency said it hasn't received any such reports.

The FDA says fakes were distributed by Medical Plastic Devices of Quebec, Canada, and Champion Sales of Brooklyn, New York.LifeScan said it was "vigorously pursuing legal actions."[font][font color="#000000" size="2"][/font][/font]

I absolutely agree!  Diabetes is a horrid disease, and doing something like that is unconscionable.  I hope they get nailed so bad they'll never leave jail.

They can counterfeit these strips now!?!?!?!?! That is terrible. And yes, these criminals should be punished most serverly. Diabetes is a serious disease and ppl rely on these strips for life. The strips are very expensive which is why I'm not surprised why something like this is being done.

awhile ago, dateline did a story about counterfit drugs being shipped from overseas. it looks so much like the real deal that alot of pharmacies have no idea they are fake.

Umm, you do know the american government says the same thing about medicines made in canada right? That they are not as good as the ones in the states and could not work the way they are supposed to right? so you should pay four times the amount to get the ones made in the states and not off online pharmacies from canada......

Yes, I know that, but I don't think they're saying that they're outright counterfits, just that it (supposedly) contravenes US law to get them from Canada. These strips are apparently completely bogus, not generic, not just low cost, but actual fakes.

They should put some kinda magnetic sticker on these strips, y'know... make it hard to duplicate. No wonder you can only get the strips over-the-counter.

  These strips are damn expensive and you go thru them anywhere from three to six (or more) a day. I know because I had to test them every so often. They cost about $60 per box of 100. Insanity.

  Ok, I didnt read enough I guess to get that they were complete fakes.. Sorry, that was the point I was trying to make because they are so prohibitively expensive. I dont agree with paying ripoff fees to companies just for their copyrights.
