ok, I know the media likes to blow things out of proportion, (especially in Canada), but Calgary, yes, has reached the million mark, but that includes the burbs and everything.
Population: 1,000,000
Metro: 1,060,000
What is Vancouver? half a million, with a metro of over 2 million in the GVRD. That 2 million includes the burbs, the half a million is just Vancouver.
See what I mean. Calgary is small in comparison.
Calgary could be considered a mini Denver. Mind you, Denver is like 3 Calgarys. With the economy of Houston, and the beauty of Canada!
Calgary is a migrant town. Not an immigrant town. People from all parts of Canada moved to Calgary for opportunities. People from places like Toronto and Vancouver that were sick of living with roomates or only being able to have a small condo (like me). So, they moved to a city where they could buy a house, thus, neighborhoods sprawled (not like me, I bought a house in in the inner city before the prices jumped, if I were to do it now, I would be SOL!). But unlike some North American cities, the inner city is not being left behind. There is a revival of shopping, art, condo housing, and recreation within the inner city. Ironic, now most people can't afford to live in Calgary anymore.
