"Ugh" ? At 16 they're ugly, sure.
On what planet are you living ?

And the Family Planning Association says there is no reason why they can't do a good job of it. Its national medical adviser, Christine Roke, said girls of 16 were emotionally capable of being mothers.

"It depends a lot on maturity. Being in the public eye can often make people mature quicker than average."

Dr Roke said teenage motherhood did not necessarily harm a person's career.

[DIV style="lineh-eight: 10px"]

"It doesn't have to, particularly in these days where all of us throughout life can go back to education and change jobs."

What a crock!  Being in the public eye can make them more worldly, but does nothing to expediate maturity.  And this from a doctor at the Family Planning Association?

Dr. Roke goes on to say 'teenage motherhood doesn't necessarily harm a person's career', but doesn't address the possibility of a person's career possibly harming  a newborn's necessity for it's mother's attention and care.

There are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, I would say a 16 year old is NOT emotionally capable of being a mother.  We seem to have forgotten, that at 16, they are still children themselves.....and children raising children isn't the ideal situation.

For thousands of years there were lots of 14-, 15-, and 16-year old mothers, but that doesn't mean that's what's best for either the mother or the child- that's just the way evolutionary pressure and history proceeded.

All in all, I'm damn glad my mother wasn't 16 when she had me. There are lots of benefits to both mother and child if the mother is older. Yes, I was having sex at 13, but I wouldn't have made a good father at that age, and the same holds true for mothers in my opinion. A 16 year old can be a mother, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I agree, TehBorken......for thousands of years it was the norm for 13, 14 and 15 year old girls to have children.  These girls were without the influence of todays society and were not likely to be persuing careers and trying to 'have it all'.  They were more likely to strap their child to their back while out milking cows and harvesting their crops.

I'd say a 13 year old, back then, had a better chance of raising a well adjusted child, than many 19 year olds today.

I meant ugh, as in not again. I come from a family where my cousins got pregnant at 17 and 19. They had everything in the world going for them. And they f*cked it up. I've been out of high school now for almost 2 years and already 6 girls have had kids. And these just weren't the 'usual suspects' the first girl had her kid senior year was the head high school cheerleader, got a 30 on her ACT, 1300 on her SAT and was on of the hottest girls in the school.

When you have a kid as a teenager you think that it won't change your life forever but they're mistaken. Your life changes. You have to drop out of school, you loose your career ambitions til much later in life. You basically put your life on hold. Kids aren't ready for it. For my cousins kids are not raised by them but there dad. And they haven't changed, they are still the same as they were before. They still get involved with the wrong guys (druggies and crazies) and I wouldn't be suprised if they got pregnant again.

I agree 100%. The kinds of things that confront a mother today are on a whole different scale than they were way back when.
