Am I anti-Microsoft? You bet, and here's another example of why. It's called "f*cking you over and then making you pay for the privilege". I didn't just wake up one morning and start hating Microsoft. It was a long, arduous process, and they helped every step of the way.
Pity the Vista user with a 32-bit CPU. Senior Program Manager Steve Riley announced today at [a href="vny!://www.microsoft.com/australia/teched2006/"]Tech.Ed Australia[/a] that full HD content shall only be played at the [a href="vny!://www.apcstart.com/site/dwarne/2006/08/1139/microsoft-cuts-another-feature-full-hd-playback-in-32bit-vista"]full resolution where only signed drivers are used[/a] — only in the 64-bit version of Vista.
From the article: '"Any next-generation high definition content will not play in x32 at all," said Riley. "This is a decision that the Media Player folks made because there are just too many ways right now for unsigned kernel mode code [to compromise content protection]. The media companies asked us to do this and said they don't want any of their high definition content to play in x32 at all, because of all of the unsigned malware that runs in kernel mode can get around content protection, so we had to do this."
So....they build a shit-ass operating system that they can't make secure, and then they punish Joe Ordinary User for running it. You won't be able to play any high-definition video in VISTA, and somehow it's not Microsoft's fault, it's the fault of "teh evil hackers". Because we all know it's impossible to build a [a href="vny!://www.ubuntu.com/"]secure[/a] [a href="vny!://www.redhat.com/"]operating[/a] [a href="vny!://fedora.redhat.com/"]system[/a], right?
