[SPAN class=corusNewsArticleText]If you idle you pay,
that's according to a bylaw change approved by Vancouver City Council this morning.
The Vancouver transportation and traffic committee unanimously approved changes to the current bylaw, which would ban idling in Vancouver.[/SPAN]

[SPAN class=corusNewsArticleText]
The new bylaw allows officers to give 50 dollar fines for people idling more than three minutes within an hour.

Sean Pander with the city sustainability group says the new bylaw is about encouraging people to reduce their emissions.

".....our hope is the public education works and people are aware again of the myths around vehicle idling that they'll want to stop idling"
He adds officers will only give warnings to people who are caught idling for the first six months.[/SPAN]

Always end the name of your child with a vowel, so that when you yell the name will carry.

They aren't going to traffic ticket anybody stuck in traffic Lise. But (I'm converging threads here) they are going after the parents that leave their kids in the car.  All they are going after are the people who leave their kids in the car while keeping it running and keeping the car running during winter or summer. But mostly this is after the kids in the car, they might through the emissions statement out but in reality they are going after child endangerment, in my opinion. All for this.

the big question is how will they know it was 3 mins? is some cop gonna be sitting next to me with a stopwatch?

I imagine they will be concentrating on school and construction zones.
Thousands of years ago cats were worshipped.  They have not forgotten.

I think it's a good idea not only to lower emissions, but to cut down on auto theft.

Where I'm from it gets damned cold and a lot of people leave the car running when they go into a store.  They come out and presto, it's gone because someone wanted a ride to Alexis Creek, an hour and some away.

They usually get their vehicles back.  As burned out shells.

It's a stupid by-law and I don't see how it will work but hey, might help the environment. And yes, I hear there will be some kinda timing by the police. They'll be issued stop watches or something similar. Dunno where they'll target though.

As I said before they'll target those casino's and Safeway's and where ever there are kids left in the car with it on. And the meter cops probly will catch a few people as well.
