Ryan Sparrow has been suspended after suggesting the father of a slain soldier who criticized Stephen Harper was a Liberal

I think that answers your question Van.

His hair is real, he just likes that 1940-50's look.

hahaha. I have somehow been able to avoid all tv lately (just too busy) so updates on the newspapers websites is how I stay current. I find it rather easier to take then 24/7 wall to wall tv coverage.

He should be more Jean-Luc Picard.  Right now he's too Friar Tuck.

Layton- The Video Professor

Harper- that guy you laugh at in middle school and high school who is still doing the hair style that your mom wants you to do because you remind her of when you were a little kid. Then when he wears all black with the black eye shadow, he looks like he's in the Sith. Robot.

Dion- I think of a muppet character when I see him for some reason

Gordon Campbell- King Louis XIV "The Sun God", I saw him speak in person last year and then on tv, he acts like the sun revolves around him.

Jean Charest- a persian cat or The Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, especially when he's talking in french, his attitude is very arrogant, self assertive like he'd roll his eyes in front of you and snort and sigh at the same time. When I was watching the last Quebec election debate, I kept thinking he's the Cheshire Cat. lol

Ed Stelmach- Mr. Ed the talking horse

Dalton McGuinty- has the energy of someone who has mono. I always see this tired looking man, like he doesn't get enough sleep at night and the kids are driving him mad. I just want to give the guy some chicken noodle soup and send him back home to sleep.

Danny Williams- A vocal Ron Paul supporter who looks like an old dean from high school.

Beaker doesn't speak English.  He says "meep" and always looks surpised.
Luckily, he works for Dr Bunsen Honeydew, a scientist who apparently understands "meep".

Anyways, what's wrong with Stephane Dion's accent?

James Moore needs a makeover. He looks like his mother dresses him.  He goes to community events looking overstuffed, overdressed and sweaty.
I think he was wearing the same outfit at Golden Spike Days (July 1 long weekend) in Port Moody.  It was sweltering outside.

I understand that he wanted to "look the part" when he was first elected, because he was so young...and he wanted his constituents to take him seriously.  But now he's over 30 and he dresses like my dad...or my grandfather...

It's an epidemic I swear, I say "I'm sorry" all the time now. Riding a bike down the street somebody wants to pass me "oh I'm sorry didn't see you". lol

ahhhh I'm becoming Canadian. lol
Although it's weird I've learned to immediately shut off the Canadianism the instant I go back Missouri. I don't think they'd get the sorry's, the hey's or the eh's, and the pardon's. lol

More Stephen Harper ministers spouting off crazy things which will sure make Harper's hair go mad.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper came to the defence of Gerry Ritz on Thursday a day after his agriculture minister came under fire for making jokes about the listeriosis outbreak that has been linked to the deaths of 17 Canadians.

But Harper dismissed pressure from the Liberals for him to apologize personally on behalf of the government and fire Ritz, noting the minister had already offered his unreserved apologies.

The Canadian Press reported on Wednesday that Ritz made the controversial remarks at an August conference call with scientists, bureaucrats and political staff.[/p]  [p style="font-weight: bold;"]Fretting about the political dangers of the crisis, Ritz reportedly quipped: "This is like a death by a thousand cuts. Or should I say cold cuts."[/p]  [p style="font-weight: bold;"]When told about a new death in Prince Edward Island, Ritz said: "Please tell me it's [Liberal MP] Wayne Easter."[/p]  Harper said Thursday that Ritz "was working very, very hard" at the time he made the comments.[/p][a href="http://ca.news.yahoo.com/indepth/id_tories/s/cbc/080918/canada/news_ritz_easter"]http://ca.news.yahoo.com/indepth/id_tories/s/cbc/080918/canada/news_ritz_easter[/a]

Was this an insensitive remark ?  Yes.

  Is it newsworthy ? No.

God help us all, if everything we say behind closed doors was made public.  95% of the population would be out of a job.

If there is an outcry for him to apologize to the families, it should also be expected of the media to apologize...as they are the ones that found it necessary to make it public.

It would be nice if one day, the media decided to get out of the news making business, and got back to reporting the news as it is.....without their opinions, comments, what ifs, it could haves.

More and more, the news has blended with show biz....questing for ratings achieved by sensationalism IMHO.   Wherever there is a mole hill...........   [img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/traurig/a010.gif" border=0]

As far as I am concerned, every politician has a member of a party that spews of things that are publicly apologized for later that year. This happened with Chrteeiten and Co. over and over too.

Not only politics....everything.  The fluff that makes up the news these days is alarming.  And if the story isn't good enough....they'll make it good enough.  Over half of it belongs on a talk show.  If they want to put their two cents worth in, don't call it The News.

fluff (sensationalism) = ratings = money = profits.

I can remember a time when the only celeb mag at the grocery store was People and the silly papers (National Enquirer and Aliens landed in New Mexico News of the World)
Now there's
Star
Ok!
TMZ (and its thousand or so blogs linked to it)
Hello!
Us Weekly
In Touch Weekly
Perez Hilton

Then there's cable news, which isn't news but recycling of stories over and over again every hour. Got to fill it with something, celeb stuff.
Then news has been driven personality based for a while now. You didn't just watch the news, you picked who you wanted to get it from. Presenters are just more then presenters, they reflect a view point.

Anyway, the problem with this recent flap is that this person is in the cabinet. Stephen Harper picked this guy to be a minister in the government and this guys words mean that he is accountable to the crown, the agricultural ministry and his government. So, by not firing this guy Harper is showing poor leadership skills in this system of responsible government, because the House probably doesn't have confidence in this minister. By firing this guy Harper is showing the House that he cannot pick the right people to be in cabinet, therefore he's not fit to govern. (although you had a better case with Bernier)

the last flap was an aide who has nothing to do with governmental affairs.

add: sorry for the talk about responsible government lol, I'm doing an essay on responsible government. haha

[/b] I understand what the flap is about.  I'm saying that by coming to the conclusion, that this means anything more than an insensitive remark, is because the media has made it so.  It tells me nothing about leadership, ability to govern, or responsible government.

I agreed that the remark was clearly insensitive.  What I conclude from that, is that he is clearly insensitive.

I'm sure that if everything said behind closed doors, were brought to our attention (especially with the media's spin), we would find out that more than just the Conservatives would have a lot of apologizing to do.  I'm not specifically referring to just the political arena.

Title: Re: Does Stephen Harper wear a toupee?

Cabinet people are the government so when a Cabinet person says stuff like this, it's a reflection of his or her government, party leader, and party.

There's a reason why when you take a Government portfolio job you first sign your resignation letter without dating it. You are responsible to your department, prime minister, the crown, the people, and your party. What you say as a cabinet member reflects the 'will of the cabinet' so to speak.

If the Foreign Minister said something off the cuff about another country, you'd have an international incident with massive apologies from the government to whatever country it was and most likely the foreign minister would resign if not, confidence vote would happen on the government, I think.

So in this election time its, "so this is really the people Stephen Harper picks to run the government? These are the people he choses to represent us?"

Yeah it's a political issue, but it strikes at what I think a government in this country is suppose to do. If you can't have confidence in the leader of the party who is the Prime Minister to put decent responsible people in government positions, why should he or she be allowed to govern?

It's one thing for a back bencher like Carolyn Parrish to mouth off about Americans to the press, she would just hurt her party (and herself) and all the Prime Minister would have to do is say "she doesn't represent the view of this government, but we allow many different points of view in our party and in our caucus meetings, and she was just upset over the presidential election, she gets too emotional sometimes, because she cares so much about the world." If she was in government, then she'd hurt the government to the point an election would of had to have been called, because you can't have a cabinet member saying that another country's citizens are 'bastards'.

"decent responsible people in government positions" ?

I must be more jaded than I thought.

I'll go back to my original comment.

Was this an insensitive remark ?  Yes.

  Is it newsworthy ? No.

My point is,  he has been called upon to respond to the families of the victims of the listeria tragedy.....all I'm saying is that they should never have been subjected to those comments in the first place.  This isn't about who I support or don't support.  [/DIV][/DIV]

  Globe and Mail editorial:

"Gerry Ritz is a real ham. At the height of a public health crisis that has so far been linked to 17 deaths in Canada and left many other people seriously ill, our Agriculture Minister was able to find some humour in the situation. His gags betray more than poor taste. Together with other missteps this week and last, it exposes a sophomoric side to a political party that is presenting itself as the only serious option in the Oct. 14 federal election."

"It is not that the jokes aren't funny, in a sick way"....... "But consider the context: A meeting of senior officials dealing with a major outbreak of a deadly disease, and literally as people are dying."

"As the lead minister on the crisis, officials at the meeting would have looked to Mr. Ritz to set the tone and to get a read on just how seriously the government of Canada was taking the matter. Judging from Mr. Ritz's decision to make light of the listeriosis outbreak, they could have reasonably concluded that the answer was not very seriously at all."

"Mr. Ritz's offensive jokes were perhaps the most damning, coming as they did in the midst of a public health crisis. But there are only so many times Prime Minister Stephen Harper can signal his disappointment with his party's ministers and staff before questions must be raised about just what sort of environment they are working in."

and most of the Harris government people are prominent people in the Harper cabinet.. Flaherty (finance), Clement (health), Baird (environment).

All 3 of them are combative types. I don't think I've ever seen Flaherty say something nice in the House of Commons.

Liberals aren't in power. If the party that is in power's first reaction is to say "well the (enter a previous government) did this..." Then they don't deserve to be running the country, the Tories aren't in opposition, yet they still act like they do. (karl rove republican style way of doing politics, slash and burn, polarize, it works marvellously until you get a huge giant backlash)

I can't believe there is still almost a month of this campaigning garbage too.  Sucky!

Who do you vote for when you hate them all equally?

if you hate the leaders, vote on your views of your mp's view on local issues and ignore the overall party nonsense. politics is local.

omg, i'm promoting the idea of one issue voting. haha

Everybody keeps telling me I could vote. I don't think you have to be a Canadian citizen to vote, I've heard this from a number of people. lol

I'd vote for the proportional representation now or bust! party, but I don't think electoral reform is that high up on people's mind.

  You better look into that.

believe me, I know well enough who I am voting for. I just get sick at the thought of it. The lesser of the sh*theadedness.

Yeah the law is Canadian citizen, but apparently Elections Canada doesn't have stringent rules or they don't really follow up on who is Canadian or not or something. They just go house to house? (again its what people have told me, I'm not used to this concept)

oh well, I wouldn't vote anyway, I rather see a Canadian my age vote for the first time then myself.

I bet you could if you wanted to.  It wouldn't be too surprising.

If I did, I'd vote vocal and provincial, I don't really care for my federal riding, there's nobody to hate on and the candidates are boring and I'd end up voting strategically. They're all rather lame. That's why I say proportional representation for everyone! none of this I'm going to vote for this person so this person doesn't win, even though I want to vote for this person or this person.

I find West Coast municipal politics to be the craziest/greatest stuff ever. Doesn't matter where on the west coast. I mean in Nanaimo we would always make fun of the mayor, then he'd threaten the maker of 'Koruption' bumper stickers with a lawsuit. hilarious, never dull. Then angry old people would write letters into the newspaper talking about how the young kids don't understand tyranny of the majority and how a bumper sticker was an insult. what? you've got to be kidding, we don't live in a mob rule society. lol

greatest laughs are always in the back of the newspaper in the letter's to the editor.

22 days until the election.
My NDP candidate has no bio posted on the NDP website.  Nice photo of her, though.
There is no Green Party candidate nominated yet.
Liberal Party candidate has a bio, but noone has ever heard of him before.
My prediction: we're sending the same overstuffed teddy bear back to Ottawa.

I almost caused a situation, where the whole voting process would have to have been done again.  ALL the vote tallies were lost.  It was the first run of a new program that was used in the returning office, and there was some BAD direction in the manual for sending the data in.  And I mean REALLY bad instructions.  One click, and it was gone.  It was me.  (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

The funny thing about this manual, was there was a whole page with circles and arrows, showing where the right and left click buttons were on the mouse....an arrow and description of the cord....it was hilarious.

The overstuffed teddy bear would keep his seat regardless. He'll never lose, vote splitting between NDP and Liberal voters. As long as he stays in the 35-40% of the vote range, he doesn't have to worry.

While I dont agree completely with any of the candidates platforms.. to me the best leader, the one that displays the most leadership, and the one that closest shares my ideals is Harper and the Conservatives.

I know not everyone agrees.. but hey, we all have our own opinions.. :)

Culture in Danger (Culture en Péril, with subtitles)

The link doesn't work, says it's no longer available.

I think part of the problem is that we look to governemnts to be everything to all people in all segments of society, and that's just wrong. Quebec has a unique and distinct culture that we should embrace and ecourage, within Canada, but to have the government as the arbiter (and financial supporter) of what they define as 'Canadian Culture is just wrong on a several levels .

1) Majority Governments.  Culture will vary depending on the party. They will decide what our culture is, and alienate at least half the population who don't agree.

2) Minority Governments. Trade political votes for other parties votes, "culture" loses.

Governments job is to provide Leadeship, Security, Education and Economic policy for the Country, and if we look to them for guide anything else we have already given them the right to decide who we are.

Poor NDP losing all their candidates.

I can't see why smoking pot is newsworthy, let alone scandal.  Especially for the NDP.  I'd be surprised if their candidates  *didn't* smoke up.

I lol'd when I read this morning about Julian West taking his clothes off (yuck!!!!...have you SEEN the man?) as he's a friend of a friend of a friend.  I have never met him personally.
