they usually have currants or dried fruit bits.
I'm not crazy about currants (seeds too crunchy) or mixed dried fruit (too much citrus peel).

There's a chocolate hot cross bun at Cobbs.  Those are pretty good.

I don't really eat hot cross buns.  Maybe once a year?

Heckyl and Jeckyl like the chocolate ones.
I don't usually buy hot cross buns.

My parents used to buy them when I was a kid (at all times of year).  I'd choke one down with LOTS of peanut butter on top, if there was no other bread in the house.

They're OK. Not that I would buy them all the time. Maybe around Easter and that's about it.

lol I think its british in origin. If so, it would be the only think british that has a presence in culinary "tradition" in Québec that I know of. Which is interesting. The translation for it is "brioche", but a brioche is usually round and flat. Anyway, people all called that stuff "bonnes", which is obviously copied from the English "buns" and means "good" in French.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

And sometimes a bun is just a bun.

How the two of you can turn everything into a political perspective is beyond me. [img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/traurig/a010.gif" border=0]

"In many historically Christian countries, the buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday, with the cross standing as a symbol of the crucifixion. They are believed by some to pre-date Chrisitianity although the first recorded use of the term "hot cross bun" is not until 1733. Protestant English monarchs saw the buns as a dangerous hold over of Catholic belief in England being baked from the dough used in making the communion wager. Protestant England attempted to ban the sale of the buns by bakers but they were too popular, and instead Elizabeth 1 passed a law permitting bakeries to sell them, but only at Easter and Christmas. David provides no source for this assertion and it seems to be a myth arising from anti-Catholic bigotry"

Interesting trivia, P.C.  Thanks!

Btw, I've never had a Catholic communion wafer, but it doesn't look like you could rise the dough into a bun...

Communion wafers are very similar to rice paper.......and they stick to the roof of your mouth in the same way.   I think only the cross is made out of the same unleavened 'whatever it is'.

It is Gophie.  It comes in squares of dry, brittle hard pieces.  You run them under the tap and then cover them with a towel for about 20 minutes.....and they turn into the most velvety soft texture.  You spread it with whatever filling you want, roll them up and cut them into medallions.  Delish.

The brand I get comes in a red box.  It looks like this after it is softened.

  [img title=Lefse alt=Lefse src="http://entrepreneur.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/lefse.jpg" width=200 border=0]

" It looks like a tortilla, but lefse is made from potatoes and butter (or shortening or cream). Also, lefse typically is rectangular, not circular. Most people spread butter on one side, roll it up like a cigar, and eat it. If you have a sweet tooth, sprinkle sugar on the butter. "

I usually fille mine with a really thin spread of cream cheese with some loks and a few capers.  MMMMMMMMMMM

I spent much time wishing I had a computer, and thinking of all the things I would like to say if I only had a way to say them.  I don't think I managed to acquire omniscience, though.  Greater perception, perhaps.
