OK, folks. I'm always on the hunt for great bargains so I thought I'd dedicate a thread to great deals that I've come across. Feel free to contribute so we can all get great deals.

Walmart is awesome for this weekend's special:

I just bought X-Men III and Disney's Pixer Cars today for $14.97 This sale is only on SATURDAY Nov 25.

On Sunday, if you're interested Nacho Libre, Da Vinci Code, MI3 goes on sale for the same price. Nov 26, Sunday only.

Xbox 360 Core Bundle with console, Kameo and Project Gotham for $397.63 Sunday Nov 26.

If you are really cheap with your money (like me), you can download movies off the internet, and if you choose the right file, the quality will be very close to what they would be on DVD. If you like it enough, you can even burn it to CD / DVD. Saves $15 or so.
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: Lise on Dec 17 06 04:35
True enough, Marik but that's not legal, is it? (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/3.gif) I don't wanna get caught....... so I'll pay The Man in the meantime.
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: Marik on Dec 17 06 08:28
Ah, that's right Lise. I was thinking of music downloads still being legal in Canada. So if you're going to buy a CD, and you don't really care about the cover or whatever other misc. stuff you might get inside, downloading + burning is the way to go!
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: Lise on Dec 17 06 08:32
I'm all for download and burning s'long as it's legit. I just don't wanna get into trouble. *chicken dance*
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: Marik on Dec 17 06 11:08
I highly doubt that anyone will be coming after you if you download a CD. Last time I checked it was legal to download music in Canada.

It is according to the supreme courts still, although the recording studios are trying to get it changed. Not as easy in a country thats not run by big business. Thats why limewire, kazaa and all the other big sites are based in Canada.

I agree kitten! <high five!> I dont care if I do save money on boxing day, I hate crowds.

I will probably miss most of boxing day tho due to the fact my gf works on the 27th so Ill be racing for the ferry attempting to get on, lol.

That being said, the Canadain tire and the Wallyworld here in Port Alberni are at least 10-15 MORE than in Vancouver on alot of items. I was flabbergasted.

it comes with an dvd with alot of exercises. it builds the 'core' of your body and gives you good balance. you can pretty much do anything on the ball as you would on a mat.

You can have sex on the exercise ball.  Try it Lise. ;)

There are many great exercises on the ball including strengthening your pelvis by wombling on the ball and bouncing up and down.  I like the ball to do my situps because it helps stabalize core muscles.

This is one of my favorite stretches:

Can you place both your soles and palms flat on the ground in that position and hold for 30 seconds?

I'd like to be able to do it without the ball, but I'm not there yet...[/DIV]

I walked past Comor at the Alberni and Thurlow location.  At this location ONLY, they have a 30-50% off of everything as they are closing down.  They are leaving at the end of this month.  I believe that all outerwear is 50% off and the rest, are 30%.  The sale is only at that location.

Canada is metric.

For example Its 32 degrees outside here when in Canada it would be 0.

You get in the car and the speed limt here is 60mph while it would be 100kph in Canada.
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: 49er on Jan 16 07 03:50
any units that are measured in multiples of 10 are metric

eg.    1000ml = 1 L       100cents = $1     1000metre = 1KM

  the old english units

eg.     pennies, shillings and pounds     pints, quarts and gallons    inches, feet, yards, miles
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: Lise on Jan 16 07 03:51
Don't they still use them in jolly old England?
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: 49er on Jan 16 07 04:01
Except for the US, I think everyone is using metric.  Our currency is metric but everything else is the old English system.
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: Russ on Jan 16 07 05:41
The US and UK imperial systems have the same names, but are different values in terms of measurement like gallons.

So 1 UK Gallon is 4.54 litres and 1 US Gallon is 3.785 Litres.

The UK has metric SI units in terms of measurements and such.. except for Miles... Plus they drive on the wrong side of the road. Fallback from teh days of knights and the side they joust on.

If anyone of you shop at La Senza, there's a bra sale right now selling for $8.50.  Great deal on really comfy bras.  I've never shopped there but was amazed last night when I walked away with some.  Pretty impressive.

ADD:  The La Senza located on Robson (near Thurlow) is having a half off sale off the already-reduced merchandise (bras and lingerie).  So, those bras starting at $8.50 at another location would cost $4.25 at this location only.  They are renovating on Tuesday for a few weeks.

Naked on the grill so you get those grill marks. What she does is cut the pineapples into four strips, insert bamboo sticks then grilled them. I'll try and find the recipe. Hang on.

Caramelized Pineapple with Hot Chocolate Sauce
Recipe By :Nigella Lawson
Serving Size : 6
Categories : Dessert-Misc. Fruit

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 ripe pineapple
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons brown sugar
14 bamboo skewers -- soaked in cold water
For the chocolate sauce:
1/2 cup Malibu or other rum
1/2 cup heavy cream
8 ounces bittersweet chocolate

Preheat the broiler or grill. Cut the top and bottom off of the pineapple and, working vertically, slice the skin off the fruit. Cut into quarters and then into three pieces again lengthwise so that you have wedges of pineapple. Cut out the woody core and thread the wedges onto the soaked bamboo skewers lengthwise and arrange these in a shallow dish.

Put the chocolate, broken into pieces, into a thick bottomed pan along with the Malibu and melt over low heat. Then stirring, pour in the cream plus any juices that have gathered from the fruit. When the sauce is thick, smooth and hot, pour into a bowl with a ladle, or enough little bowls to give one per person.

Lay the pineapple kebabs on a sheet of foil and either broil or grill the pineapple, thickly coating it with brown sugar first, until it caramelizes and scorches in the heat.

Take from the broiler or grill and lay them on a large plate and let everyone take them as they want, dipping the pineapple skewers into the hot chocolate sauce as they eat.

You kill the bromelain and all other useful, active enzymes in pineapple when you expose it to heat.

So it might be good to try out the grilled variety once in a while, but from a nutritional point of view I'd stick to eating/juicing them raw.

450 g of peanut sesame crunch in clear vacuum packed boxes - originally selling for over $7.50 (forgot the exact original price, but it's close to $8) now on sale for $1.99 @ T&T. (I got mine from Chinatown location on Keefer, near Stadium Skytrain Stn.)

Melts in your mouth, not hard at all... and doesn't stick to your teeth like the sugar laden ones do.

Best investment of my toonie for this year.

Black sesame is nice also

I can finish the (nearly) pound of peanut crunch in 2 sittings, but I don't think that'd be possible with the black sesame variety without risking major stomach upset.

If you don't live in the area, why not get a box of each?

And I'm betting you'll finish the peanut one sooner.

Hey Raging Poodle.  I brought that sesame peanut crunch from T&T and they are delicious.  I had a few and had to stop myself from finishing the whole tub right then and there.  I should've brought more.  My dad would love these.  And, today was the last day for this sale.  DARN!  I would've picked up more.  I went to the Metrotown T&T and looked up and down the side isles for a while (not knowing what brand to look for) and after a couple of minutes, found them!  I was happy.  So, thanks so much for posting this info.  Bless.

Fruitcana!!! I thought I was the only who shops there! I thought it's called FruitLand now. I go there to buy samosa. Really awesome, just re-heat in oven and your guests will be impressed.

I also buy my spices there, some that I can't get from Superstore or Save-On Foods.

There's also a little gem of a shop in the Old Orchard complex, between Pho Century and Rogers Video. This grocery store has some good deals on tomatoes, oranges, etc. etc. all for a mere buck.

I'm not sure exactly where. I forget the name of the street but it's quite close to Burnaby Hospital. There's this one street that has shops on either side. I think the street is called Sunset but am not sure. Possibly Sunset and Smithe Street, Burnaby. Sorry. I'm quite bad with directions.

For sure get those samosas. Well worth the price because for $10.00, you get quite a fair bit and you can always freeze the ones you don't need till next time.

If you enjoy good fresh samosas, you can also get them from Safari Snackhouse (5121 Canada Way). Lovely, smooth sauces to go with your samosas. Yummy.

Some of the best Samosa's Ive had are here in the general area where I live in.. we call it little india. lots of East Indian shops around, the 49th and main and 49th and fraser areas. You can get veggie, beef, etc samosa's for 4 or 3 for a buck. Just wander around. The restuarant at 49th and Main is all you can eat veggie cuisine for 6 bucks a person. I usually get that then order a dish or two of a lamb masala or a chicken curry.. but you need two people as those are 10 bucks a piece.

OK....I don't know if this belongs in this topic or not.....but here goes.

I have spent the last week chipping off three layers of flooring in my kitchen.  A layer of linoleum,  a layer of lino tile and a layer of gunk.  I bought slate tile to replace the floor, (which does NOT belong in the best deals thread).

SO......now that I'm down to the concrete slab.......I thought that the raw concrete floor looked identical to the slate look tiles I just spent a fortune on. Complete with  'grid' markings from where moisture or spills have leached into the seams.  It has taken on a really nice mottled look that 25 year old concrete does.  I've decided to paint on more defined grout lines, lay a couple coats of commercial grade varathane......and voila.......a 'slate' tile floor for the cost of a can of varathane.

It looks very much like the tile in the lower left. (except square and not pinkish)

Awww shucks.   It's not so much 'handy' as it is that I get a kick out of doing stuff that looks rich, without a rich budget.    I have this blasted knack of selecting things, without knowing their price, that turn out to be the most expensive thing in the store.  But I'm fairly frugal, so I start trying to figure out ways that I can get 'the look' I want, in a different way.  Sometimes it works......sometimes it doesn't.

I'll find out soon enough with this one.  No biggy, if it doesn't work, not much lost and I can continue and just tile over it.

Post by: Moolah! on Feb 15 07 03:53
I do the same also. I never buy them at their outrageous regular prices.

Once in a while Shopper's puts Cote D'ors on sale for 2 for $5.00. That's when I usually grab a couple.

One word on Cote D'ors: Don't go for the variety that only says "Dark chocolate" on it. It's crap. (I'm suspecting the one that says "Milk chocolate" will also be similar.) It is so sweet that the ony way I could finish one was by melting it in milk and making hot chocolate with it.

70% is where it's at. (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/21.gif)

Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: purelife on Feb 15 07 03:57
Let me know when you see it on sale at Shopper's, Mool!  I don't often head over to Shoppers.  I don't think that I've tried that brand before.

I saw this recipe for hot chocolate on tv.  I think she had full fat milk, with honey, with 2 cinnamon sticks and brown sugar.  Then, she put a chunk of pure chocolate in it and then took out the cinnamon sticks.  I've got to try this recipe if my memory serves me well.
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: Moolah! on Feb 15 07 04:13
There're various ways of making hot chocolate. I remember coming across with a Castillian variety which had a bit of corn starch in it for thickness.

Yours would be fairly high in calories and fat. Even if one is not on a diet, I believe in reducing simple sugars and fat as reasonably as possible. So for example in your recipe I'd reduce or completely eliminate the honey (chocolate will already have enough sugar in it) and switch to at least 2% milk.

However I also realize personal tastes vary.

Speaking of T&T, they had this for the past few days now. I don't know how long more it'll last:

3 lb. bag of apples: 0.99c.

I juice a lot of apples. They're a mainstay in my cocktails so I can go through one of these bags in less than 3-4 days.

If you're eating, you can probably finish the whole bag within 2,5 weeks.

Agreed. I just bought a packet of those peanut crunch. Very interesting although a tad too sweet for my taste bud.

Special deals at T&T usually on the weekends. I just bought a huge bottle of Ribena juice for under $2.00.

Just got this in the email this morning. Killarney Community Centre is going to give a FREE movie screening of Night at the Museum on July 21, 2007. Movie is going to be at Killarney North View and will start at 8.30pm.

Great outing for the kids. Bring blankets. Small concession will be available.

Uh.. I hate to break this to you Lise.. but 'night at the museum' is out on video now.

Why go out to watch it at a crowded community centre when you can have them watch it at home?

Or am I missing the whole point of this exercise completely?
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: purelife on Jul 16 07 02:23
8pm - 10pm is going to be pretty late for kids to be up, imo.  But, it's a kid's event where other kids are going to be there... just be careful of the cranky kids because it's probably way past their bedtime.

EDIT:  Let me rephrase.  In the summer, I agree... kid's can stay up til like 9 or so.  But on a school night, it's 7.

I think it depends on what the plans are for the next day.  For instance, Heckyl and Jeckyl are staying up late this week because we don't have too much going on.  Next week, they're in day camps at SFU so we have that early start :)
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: Lise on Jul 16 07 08:57
Yeah, yeah, I know Russ my boy but it's all for the community. Not everyone can afford to rent videos. Besides, it's a family event thingee. Not many kids get to experience watching a big screen out in the open.

One of the Dollar Daze(???) store is closing in Metrotown according to my mother-in-law. I think it's the one by Ricky's, same floor as the Bay opposite Langley Fruit and Vegetable Market. (???) Everything there is on 1/2 price, so you're paying something like 50 cents for cards and whatever.

Thanks Russ and Lise.....I am sprinkling you both with appreciation dust.

Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: Lise on Jul 26 07 10:12
It's weird but yes, there's a fruit store with Langley written on it. I'm not sure why. I assumed it's a branch because I've seen the store in Richmond.

Dipping sauce? I usually recommend the Japanese soy sauce. I'm not sure why but it's the nicest and taste far less saltier. My favorite dipping sauce for the moment is the Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce. It's nice and sweet, you can buy it from Save-On Foods or Superstore.

You're coming down to the Crystal Mall? Nice! If you are, we can meet for bubble tea? Just lemme know, if you're interest, Ms. PC. I can take you around and show you what you can get.

There's a fish shop there that sells little fish balls. It's the one between the bakery and veggie store. The fish balls there are just perfect for hotpot. I find the texture nice and quite crunchy. Grab a couple of those if you pass by. I also recommend the silky tofu! Good stuff.

The graphics and the whole "comicy" look was awesome.  I enjoyed the slo-mo action and you've got to look at the ABS of the Spartans!!!!!!!!  Supposedly, they trained everyday for several hours to maintain that 6pack.

Thx for the plum sauce deal at SOF.  I'll pick some up for sure.
Title: Re: Best Deals
Post by: Lise on Aug 02 07 03:33
That's the thing with this Dollarama, I'm not sure why the shelves are always nearly empty. They must move through a lot of stock or something. But it's still impressive. Far bigger than most dollar stores I've been in. Great stuff if you have kids and need party items though.

I love 300, purelife. It's the type of comic/graphic art movie that attracts me. Frank Miller's work is dark and gory - just my type! (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

I got the plum sauce by VH but I'm not sure what I'm going to use it for. Maybe fried chicken pieces dipped into the sauce or something like that. Still at 79 cents, it's so cheap! BTW, it's not advertise outside so you can be sure this is a good deal.

  Located at the Asian aisle.

I also like plum sauce for pork.  :)

We'll be watching Bourne this Friday.  I hope that it's not packed like Transformers and Spidey 3.

Customer Appreciation Days

Safeway - 10% off your grocery bill on the first Tuesday of every month

Alive (Health Food Store) - 15% off regular priced items on the first Tuesday of every month
I had no idea these two places offered that deal until I shopped there today.  I was HAPPY to have saved some $$!  I'm going to take advantage of this from now on, now that I know about these deals.  I thought that I'd share. :)))

You also get 3.5 cents a litre off gas at Safeway if you spend $35 too.  (I don't know if this is everywhere though) So on top of the 3.5 cents you get for having a Safeway card, you're saving 7 cents a litre.  Bonus!

The $7.99 Ribs and Fries at the Costco snack bar looks and smells really good.
It's a portion that could feed a family of 4.
Anyone tried it?  (not me.  I was still full from breakfast at 10am)

Have you guys ever seen this camera that wraps around the tree and takes a photo every minute it senses movement?  It looks like a thin box, but MrPL's parents have one and they use it for bird photos and our camping trip when we sat around campfire. I don't know what it's called but photos are stored on memory card.  It's really cool!

I use the exfoliating gloves too PC...for my feet mainly cuz they get so dry at times

I should find out where they brought this because I'd love to get my hands on one.  When I first saw it, I thought it was some sort of bird feeder and it didn't look like a camera.  I wish I knew the name or can google a pic for you.  All I know is that it picks up on movement and there's this red light that blinks letting you know that a pic has been captured and all are stored on a memory card.  And it takes 1000's of photos all day long...

What I like to do for Christmas as a little joke is to put their gift inside some box / wrapping that makes the person getting your gift go "WHAT?!?!"
So for example, I got my brother this magic set (he is really into that) but put it inside this Canadian Tire bag that we had.

There was free gas this morning at the Chevron at Willingdon/Canada Way, right by BCIT.
Couldn't stop, unfortunately.  There was a really long line-up, and I was on the verge of running late for an appointment.

Russ:  pssst!  How important is it to change flush the differential fluid?  I didn't do it today.  Never have, why start now?!

Its not really important. Some different types of synthetic oils break down after... ten years. Most oils last a long time, especially mineral oils. Manufacturers like to try to make money. Dont do it.

I never change oil in my diffs.. only check the levels. I DO at times drain a bit out of the bottom drain plug and look for oil separation or shavings. Never seen it.

Dont worry about it. Unless your axle differentials are leaking, then add to it. I think the last time I went to a Lubester, I had them check my diff levels.
On my Blue GMC pickup, I have once checked the diff levels, never changed the oil. Its a 1990.

what type of oil does your vehicle have? 75W-90 I assume but synthetic or mineral?

Same thing with transmission fluid and filter. Maybe change it after like 5 years, if you been driving it hard or towing something once in a while. Take a look at your fluid once in a while, if it looks blackish or dark with particles in it (looks like dirt when you take some in your fingers and rub it together) change the oil and filter. If it smells burnt, change it. It should look like a watered down red and smell like.. uh, ATF. The biggest enemy to an auto is HEAT, as in overheating the oil. If you load up your vehicle or tow something with it on highway steep grades etc.. install an auxilliary transmission cooler. They are about 100 bucks and takes two hours to install. Anyone can do it.
I have seen two auto transmissions go on vehicles I have been around.. and it was to do with overworking it.. in essence overheating it.

Yes. Good point Michel, sorry I assumed your vehicle wasnt still under warranty.
If your warranty requires it you have to do it to keep your warranty. Then you get a record of the maintenance being done for warranty purposes.
If its out of warranty I wouldnt worry about it then. I trust manufacturer's recommendations only so much..

I went to Sears Day a couple weeks ago- almost everything in the store was at least 25% off, some things marked down 2 or 3 times.  All the wrong prices came up in the cash register.

Even after I had paid, I noticed some mistakes on the bill..so I lined up again to have them corrected.  It's the principle of the thing, not the $2 that I got back...

I never check my bills.. but now I have started to after this one time SS checked a bill as we were leaving costco and saw that I had been overcharged almost 200 dollars for double charged items, I would have just crumpled it into a ball like all the others, left it in my pocket, washed my pants and finish. Im observant like that.

It IS the principal of the thing.

Marks work special sounds good LM!

EDIT: BUY an xmas tree? Go online, download the free permit, encourage (force) a family tradition trip up to around squampton, hack down a tree, come home, make sure no birds/ squirrels inside damn thing, stick in living room.

EDIT EDIT: 20 bucks off 20 buck tree at Ikea is cheating.

Ooooh.  I'd love to.  But fire regs don't permit cut trees in my abode.  I think it will be a Charlie Brown tree in a pot this year.  Next to a festivus pole.

I couldn't cut down a living tree for the sake of decorating my place for a few weeks. Seems like a waste of a good tree. I like my tree fake and re-usable year after year after year.

For those of you interested in make-up, Sears have this awesome deal where you spend like $33 on any Lancome product and get a gift bag with all the goodies for free. It's valued at $110 plus. Anyways, here's the [A href="http://www.sears.ca/gp/browse.html/ref=sc_iw_c_0_1_394759011/177-9868159-0898566?ie=UTF8&node=1252027011&searsBrand=core"]information[/A] on how to get the goodie.

I don't think expecting to be charged the correct price for an item is cheap at all.  Of course for people like stretch who apparently has more money than god.....it's not a problem.  But for most of us, it's a reasonable expectation....and yes....there is principle involved as well.

As for coupons ?  They're for anyone who wants to ensure that as much of their hard earned money stays in their own pockets....not lining somebody elses.  Especially in times, where everything costs 3 times more than its worth.  Rich people don't get rich by throwing their money around.

walks in to tune of peoples court

listens to pleas from both sides
 says its idiotic and futile
declares pc as winner by reason of making excellent common sense
exits to tune of peoples court still playing :D

the rich don't get rich by throwing thier money away and the poor are to poor to ive it away

me i expect to be charged the correct amount for a item and will request a refund of said item when or if i catch said retailer making a ereror and now that i know of the voluntary law i will be invoking that law and testing its worth in certain places like Safeway... where i have more than once caught them making mistakes at the check out ...

 your welcome JJ

wow JJ your blessings have nearly tripled, they were only at 49 plus the one i gave u to get you to 50 last night.

you must of caught many good karma pigs today...

Congrats on the great karma...

acetaminophen is no longer a drug i can use now or possibly ever again.. I need to find something new to use for my chronic back problems that does not consist of a drug that can cause further liver damage

I was able to catch karma pigs last week, but this week they fly too fast.  If they deducted for each miss I'd be in the negative. (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

You're correct tylenol isn't a good thing people with liver problems, I just wanted to point out that there were other deals on the site you found.

These are AMAZING.  I remember purelife had mentioned using them, but I finally got some, and I am totally impressed.  I can't believe how fresh the produce remains when kept in these bags.  They're not terribly cheap, but I know for sure, I won't be throwing out slimy produce any more.  That in itself has got to be a major savings. (plus I HATE throwing out food !!!)  ( also they are reusable)

Good tip, P.C.  Thanks.  Did you need to order them from tv?
I have some Tupperware brand containers that do the same thing.
But most of the time we manage to use our veggies before they turn (damn preservatives, I guess...).

Sawdust got them at that place called ShowTime.  It carries all the 'as seen on TV' crap.  I was skeptical, but was convinced of their effectiveness within the week.

I find that with just the two of us, we don't often go through everything before it's past its best.  I'm constantly throwing out green onions.  They don't seem to last more than a couple days.  The ones in the bag now, are squeaky fresh.

I usually pay $15 at The Bay (about once a year), but that seems a bit excessive because I've been doing this for going on 10 years....for a $40 Timex watch!

I asked for a discount at Toys R Us today, and actually got one!
Jeckyl needed a basketball.  There was one size 5 (little size) composite bball left in stock.  It was marked full price ($29.99!), even though it had no box, was dirty and looked beat-up and used.
So they gave it to me for $10, final sale.
I think I can clean it up with Mr Clean magic eraser.

That's a good deal!

I once got a discount from Sport Mart because their swim cap (off white) was a bit dirty on the outside and wasn't in any package.  I got it for like $2.  It was regularly more than $20.

If I see a shirt and there is a stain and it's the last size on the rack, I'd ask for a discount.  And some stores give it to me.

EVERYTHING stays fresher....WAY fresher.  Green onions are something I often toss...not any more.  They last until I have used the last bit.  Peppers don't get that slime action on the cut edge.  I like to buy the big container of spinach at Costco...but we don't usually see one of those through to the end either.  But in those bags it stays perfect.

I transfer the stuff into them as soon as I unload the groceries.  I love 'em !!!  I haven't thrown out a morsel this month. (except for the sacrificed grapefruit....lol)

I don't know what kind of deal this is, but Costco has these little mini green beans, that are DEEEEEliscious.  I look at them every time I'm there (they're right beside the Manns Peas that I also get), but we've never gotten them before.  Mostly because the quantity is huge for 2 people.

So with the fabulous 'green bags', we thought we'd give them a try.

Anyways....they are a good deal for the amount you get, and they really are good.

Oh, my mom brought those ones and she made them for me when I was there last and they were yummy!  She buys them all the time now.

I don't buy them because we don't end up eating green beans every day so I end up buying the organic green beans in the frozen section.  They are super delicious.  I follow the recipe on the back of the package.

If anyone is looking for a slow cooker, The Bay, Metrotown is selling the Hamilton Beach brand for $35 regularly $90.  It's 6 quart, I think.  We needed a new one because the one we had was over 17 years old (grandma gave it to us) and the heating element was starting to slow down.

Looks like this:

Are you looking for a 4-quart size, P.C.?  You're right that they are harder to find.  I wonder why it's so difficult.

We have a 4 quart but I was thinking that this 6 quart could make lots of lunches for work. :)  And I read that many meals freeze nicely.  I honestly don't know where I'm going to put this one as we barely have any space in the cupboards.

I'm not sure what the quart size would be....but the one I have is perfect for two.

I love those appliance garages....VERY nice.  I don't even have the space for those, but they are nice in that you can keep the appliances on the counter, but out of  sight.

An alternative to that, if you can spare a lower cupboard, is to get the hardware that 'cantilevers' them up on a shelf.

Nope....not so good.  You can get rice cookers.  I've never seen the value in them, as it's too simple to cook in a pot on the stove.  Once you figure out your timing and temp....you'll get perfect rice consistently every time.

Oh, we made space for our crock pot in the cupboards.  Yay!

This is what I do.  Simplest ever.

Tiny bit of oil in bottom of a pot with a tight fitting lid  (turned on high)  .  Get it hot....dump in one cup rice.  Stir it around a bit....dump in 2 and 1/4 cups of water.  Put lid on.  Cook on high for 5 minutes.....turn down heat to medium for 5 minutes....turn down heat to minimum and cook until water is absorbed.  Turn off heat.....and let it sit until it reaches the desired amount of 'fluffiness'.  I prefer my rice a little heavier/moister.

I would say, go to the buck store and get a set of measuring cups.

Not many people I know put oil first.  This is a little trick I learned many many years ago....and it has always worked for me....so I have just never changed it.  I should also say, that different pots will cook differently.  I have one pot that I have always used for rice....heavy walled pot.  I tried cooking rice in another pot a few weeks back...and I used a different pot (something I have never done)....and it cooked totally different using exactly the same method.

I guess it requires a little experimenting....but it would be worth it.  Rice is relatively inexpensive....and a little goes a long way.

*I started using the oil first method, when I discovered that I didn't care for the way garlic tasted in the rice....and yet I love garlic in my rice.  It had a 'boiled garlic' taste.  So the oil first method started, so I could saute up the garlic a bit before adding the rice and water.

Here's how I cook my rice:

  1.  Pour one cup of rice in the pot and wash the rice.  I like to wash it to get rid of the starchiness.

  2.  Add two cups of cold water

  3.  Add a little bit of oil.  I use sesame oil.

  4.  Bring to boil without lid and stir once.

  5.  Turn down to low and put the lid on.  Cook for about 40 minutes.

In Step 3, you can choose to add whatever veggies you have.  I finely chop up a celery and add small bits of chinese sausages.  You can add peas.  It cooks very nicely.  If you have leftovers, stir fry it with whatever veggies/meat you have available.  I like to buy the bag of pre-washed/cut coleslaw and mix it with the rice for a nice stirfry.

Most rice packages will have the cooking instructions.

ADD:  I use a non-stick pot.  But, my mom used to cook it in a metal pot and the rice would stick and the best part was eating it.  It was so darn crispy with drizzle of sesame oil and salt!!  YUMMMM!

Does anyone know if parboiled rice is ok vs long grain rice?

Cooking time depends on the rice, whether it's parboiled or long grain.

Par boiled ?  Like minute rice ?

Wild rice would have different directions I think, Michel.

Are you looking for a 4-quart size, P.C.?  You're right that they are harder to find.  I wonder why it's so difficult.

We have a 4 quart but I was thinking that this 6 quart could make lots of lunches for work. :)  And I read that many meals freeze nicely.  I honestly don't know where I'm going to put this one as we barely have any space in the cupboards.

many meals freeze very well and when one is living on a budget. stews and soups are a great way to survive. the slow cooker is a awesome deal. i have been needing a new one since my brother accidentally threw away the lid for my 4 quarter one... works great no lid. so if u want one no lid send me pm and u can come get it. im pretty sure it's 4 quarts.

Michel...you can pick up a set like these at the buck store.  It would be a cheap investment if you do learn to cook rice.  Cooking up a big batch would see you through the week easily....and by adding whatever strikes your fancy, gives you some variety in your menus.

Thanks for the offer on the crockpot Orik.  I'm thinking I will be looking for one with a lid  (and I'm dreadful picky about things matching).....but that was very kind of you.

Orik have you thought to look at Value Village  for a lid that would fit.  I broke my crock pot lid and was able to find one there.

Um......careful on the spamming of that website.  I removed 'cosmopolitan's' thread.  It seems you are with the same company ?

As this thread is basically full of 'deals' with specific companies...this would be a more appropriate place for your 'Best Deal' than a whole thread on just that company. (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/14.gif)
