I don't think it is a matter of which is the better city. They are both great, just different.

Well if you go by transportation wise. You don't need a car to live in Vancouver if you live by skytrain and when Canadian line and Evergreen line open those people who drive cars from richmond to moody to work downtown wouldn't have to.

Seattle on the other hand while its building a line. Its still eons away from Vancouver.

Vancouver is by far better, you said it yourself.

Seattle has way more to do than Vancouver. Seattle has a thriving music scene with tons of local events and venues. Seattle nightlife kills Vans period. Vancouver has Stanley park and a walkable downtown and that's about all. If livability to you is staring at the mountains and taking a walk in the park after a lunch of cheap sushi than Vancouver is it. If culture is what makes a city livable to you, then it's Seattle.

Johnny may I ask whay music scene? Grunge died years ago. Vancouver has its own indie scene heck on itunes under Canada they have a section called 'Vancouver Pop'. Seattle doesn't have its own itunes catagory.

Sportsdude, grunge was not even the first wave of music to come from Seattle. Look on wikipedia under Arts in Seattle for more on this. Grunge was just the first genre to recieve the worlds attention and really put Seattle in the conciousness of music fans. Since then the music scene has diversified even more and is still turning out internationally recognized acts. Examples are Modest Mouse, Band of Horses (on letterman last month) the blood brothers, death cab for cutie (bellingham based) and also nearby Olympia has a great music scene all its own. There are also tons of music festivals, venues and recording studios where bands come to record with some of Seattle's more well known producers like Phil Ek ( the Shins, Built to Spill etc..) Vancouver has a small music scene that any city of any substantial size should and usually has, but it is in no way on the level of Seattle.

Both cities are great. As for nightlife, I don't know about nowadays because I am past the nightlife days, but back in the 90s, the nightlife in Seattle made Vancouver's look like Sunday school. Seattle always had a lively music scene too (besides Sub Pop). I love both cities.

Don't let this turn into a DV style "my city is better than your city" argument.

I'm not interested in nightlife either, but both cities rate highly in livability.

Never been there, drove past it but never went to a concert there. The place is famous now. Its the place if your a band and you have a concert there you've offically 'made it'.
Title: Re: VANCOUVER OR SEATTLE?!?! WHICH IS BETTER

I seen Lollapalooza in 92 (or 93?? it was all a blur), at the Gorge and it was the best time I ever had at a concert.

I do know a lot of Vancouver folks that go to Seattle for Seahawks games too. By the busloads. Not a big football guy myself.

Love to watch games there on TV. Loved to go there in person.

Post by: CK on Sep 05 06 07:42
That is cool! I went to a Seahawks game when I was younger and it was at the Kingdome. It was like a large version of BC Place.

Besides hockey, Seattle is definately a bigger sports town. Even hockey, they have 2 WHL teams, (well, one is in Everett.)

I think Canadians prefer NFL over CFL anyways.

Yeah it reminds me of a football stadium in Europe.

Another great stadium of University of Washington's stadium.

Mainly for its views on a lake.
Title: Re: VANCOUVER OR SEATTLE?!?! WHICH IS BETTER
Post by: Sportsdude on Sep 05 06 07:48
Well then I guess I'm a rarity I'd prefer to watch a CFL game. The weather is wacky (nothing like seeing a game in Saskatoon in the middle of winter) and they are forced to pass more and the bigger field. I was a lineman in high school best team in the state played a game in front of 15,000 people once and lost. We never made it to the championship game but the AP of Missouri still voted us 2nd that year, we were that good. Never lost a game all season. Blew out everyone by 50 points. *starting to tear* oh the good old days. Well we'll see what everyone's like in 25 years when they name something after are team at the high school and we have to show up
Title: Re: VANCOUVER OR SEATTLE?!?! WHICH IS BETTER
Post by: CK on Sep 05 06 07:57
I don't mind CFL. Its like the little engine that could. Pushing through the bad years of poor attendance and low TV ratings. Wider fields, but also 1 more player on the field.

If I go to a live game, it is a lot more fun than on TV. Yesterday was the Labour Day classic in Calgary vs. Edmonton, it is a tradition that goes way back. I never went, we were driving back from camping.

That is sweet! Must have been exciting. I just played hockey throughout school, and just for just fun afterwards.

I know some folks so into the NFL, they spend the entire Sunday in front of a TV? My Sundays are too precious to sit in front of the idiot tube all day. (believe me, I do like watching sports too..ahem! HNIC... just not all day).  I want my son to grow up enjoying activities and sports, not just watching them.
Title: Re: VANCOUVER OR SEATTLE?!?! WHICH IS BETTER
Post by: Sportsdude on Sep 05 06 09:09
yeah I'm looking at the scores

  41 to 0

43 to 7

31 to 14

41 to 27

46 to 6

49 to 10

33 to 17

21 to 0

58 to 14

9 to 0 (that was the game where a fan attacked one of our players on the field almost escalated to a gun shoot out, cops came)

13 to 7 (went into the bootheel of the state got racial slurs thrown at us by the racist 'dog pound' they had cops came arrested the fools)

7 to 13 (number 1 team in the state and we had to go into a farming community again the whole town showed up, 15,000 people at a game. Best player broke his finger, doc couldn't pop it into place. Then our star tight end who had a spread in the paper about him that morning dropped a wide open pass which would have made us one the game.) depressing

i prefer vancouver for the following reasons:

  seawall

stanley park (urban park)

city is more walking friendly

mountains and skiing close by

bc bud is widely availble

    i prefer seattle because:

  better beer choices

some great dining

better music selection

both are great cities although i feel safer in pioneer square more than i do on hasting east (downtown).

seattle waterfront is not so happening and monorail sucks.

vancouver has to many agressive panhandlers and rip off esl schools

seattle has red hook ale

vancouver has granville island limited release pilsner

seattle has seatac with more flight connections

YVR sucks and is too small.

  etc etc.

I guess you would have to live in each city to really know what it is like. I never lived in Seattle, but I have lived in California. The neighbors I had there are still cool friends to this day. I found it super easy to make friends there.

I have had many good times in Seattle. Times when the weekend came to an end and I didn't want to go home.

The biggest thing that bugs me about Canada in general, Canadians can't be just proud, or even content being Canadian without slamming the USA. It seems our whole identity revolves around our feelings towards the USA. You rarely see Canadians showing their patriotism without some sort of dissent towards America. You are allowed to be a proud Canadian, and still love the USA.

  Cheers to my American neighbors!

Thats because english Canada has been pretty much taken over by american culture. For example you turn on CTV or Global on prime time and what do you see? American shows. Then you've got people in the country that want to destroy the only thing english Canada has left of Canadian culture: CBC.

Thats where the anti americanism starts and it goes on from there. People see Canada morphing into this american controlled country and they don't like it they loose there identity. So the only thing that can bind english canadians together is anti americanism.

Quebec has the french language but what does english Canada have?

Then it goes into politics. You've got an american apologist party in the Conservatives.

Then you look at sports, who runs the NHL? An anti canadian new yorker who has moved 2 teams out of Canada and will not put more teams in Canada.

Then its the dumb americans who come up and make stupid jokes about Canada like asking where the snow is during the middle of the summer.

Then there's the anti canadian politicians in Congress like IRA supporter who in my opinion is a terrorist supporter Peter King from New York.

Another problem in Canada is regionalism. You're not Canadian but Albertan, Torontonian, Quebecios, Newfoundlander, BCer. Canada has strong regionalism instead of strong nationalism. Thats what happens in a confederation.

Well put sports.

I think for the most part Canadians are proud to call Canada home. It is a lot more humble though. You see the odd house with a Canadian flag out front, but just a few, you know what I mean? Its there, just not pulsing the way it is in other countries.

Most Canadians don't realize what we have at home until we travel a bit around the world. Speaking for myself, I am very happy here and don't take it for granted. My heart is in the shape of a maple leaf (the doctors are looking into it)...

But I can say, I am a proud Canadian, but still LOVE Americans! This is a controversial thing to say up here.

I heard that you only see 'canadian patriotism' in Ontario.

But yeah I equate it to Texas. If you were born and reared there you say your Texan first. Thats what Canada is expect (enter Province here). I know Trudeau is hated in the Western part of the country but he did try to stir up 'canadian nationalism'. If you go to Germany for example you'll see no german flags waving because people are afraid to do it because of Germany's past. Thats what I think is Canada's problem except they don't have a dark past like Germany unless you are an anglo living in Quebec just trying to stir up trouble in a seperatist nieghbourhood. Maybe its the Quebec issue maybe its not but thats my 2 cents.

Really ????  This is not my experience.  I've seen this sentiment expressed numerous times before, and it surprises me.  I do not feel this way, nor does anyone in my family or circle of friends.  I don't see Americans as being terribly different than Canadians.  I've ALWAYS had a HUGE admiration for their patriotism......we as Canadians don't seem to have that.

Oh not everyone, but you talk to a lot of people and if asked if they are proud to be Canadians, and they say yes, but glad we are not the USA. Just from years of chatting, plus our media doesn't help.

Their patriotism is shown in different ways. I think Canadians are very proud, but it is humble sort of pride, and very regionalized.

I never slammed the USA either, Canada has enough problems of its own to point the finger elsewhere.

I know what you mean. I used to not really care either way. Until I travelled and seen some other countries. After coming home, it really opened my eyes to what we have right here, feeling very proud to call Canada home. We are pretty spoiled here.

  Anyways, back to the topic.

Comparing Seattle to Vancouver is interesting. I always thought Seattle was more comparible with a larger centre, like Denver or something? I don't know?

It seems Portland is more comparible with Vancouver. Portland is another town that stole my heart. One afternoon/night on Hawthorne and I was hooked on that city. This neighborhood fought to keep McDonalds out of its area, and the last I heard, they won! I raise my beer to that!

It's not that I don't care.  I love where I live and feel extremely blessed.   I may have patriotic notions, but I've never had the urge to wave a flag.  I'd like to think that being respectful of how I treat the environment is some form of patriotism, but I wonder if that just wishful thinking.  I can't believe I've been on this planet for this long, and STILL don't really know what it means.[img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/more/bigs/c020.gif" border=0]

I like comparing cities though. Comparing politely. Not "my city is better", which on dv, you can't compare without that happening.

It is pretty hard to compare two cities though, without living in both of them. That is the only way to really know a city.

patriotism? what's that?

Is that putting flag bumper stickers on your car, putting little flags out side your window of the car, wearing clothes that are flags? Because if thats considered patriotism well we sure did commericalise it.

Quickest easiest form of patriotism. Do you believe in Canada? Yes or no. If you do that's patriotism. Canadians in general I believe believe in Canada. Therefore they are patriotic but instead of boasting about it telling everyone within a 20km distance that they are patriotic they keep it to themselves. Nothing wrong with that.

And if you are a regionalist, you'd put your province ahead of the state.

cool way to put it. I was in California during 9/11 and it seriously blew my mind the way the world was painted in stars and stripes. I am still blown away by this. The closest I ever seen anything like this in Canada was when Canada won gold at men's hockey in '02. So many flags, everywhere I went.

I have a beautiful Canadian flag in my basement in my gym.

Do I believe in Canada? yes. Enough to send my son the the Canadian armed forces? Not for some phony baloney oil war. Maybe to defend Canada or to help keep the peace.

damn! now I got myself thinking...
Title: Re: VANCOUVER OR SEATTLE?!?! WHICH IS BETTER

Exactly CK. You are patriotic in your own way. You don't have to think about your patriotism. You don't have to go around telling people that you are Canadian. Its a different type of patriotism.

There's american patriotism which is show boating and then there is national patriotism which is what Canada has.

The problem is Canadians see American Patriotism and automatically think they aren't patriotic. Oh contrer, Canadians are just as patriotic about Canada they just don't express it in the american type way.

Now, nationalism, I don't think Canada has a strong nationalism. A Confederation creates weak nationalism and more emphasis on the provinces in this case. Only time I see Canadian Nationalism come out is when there is a threat of Quebec seperation.

I imagine you will see more nationalism when the Olympics get under way.  That's when the flags will be out in force.  Athletics seems to bring out a common bond when it is performed internationally.

Cheers! Yes, we did end up winning. There is now a glass and steel condo building there now instead. I love Hawthorne especially since I live on it (PM me if you're ever through here again CK, we'll burn one and grab a barley pop). Y'all who love nightlife would love my house - I'm around the corner from four or five bars/clubs and the best pizza in town (Apizza Scholls, amazing crust, great toppings)
I think I've said it before that SF, Portland, Seattle, Van are all similar variations on a theme. Which one you like better will depend on what you want out of a city/country. I agree with everything everyone's said aboot Seattle and Vancouver so far. I'd pick Vancouver, personally.
And on the subject of patriotism-I much prefer the Canadian style of quiet pride, rather than littering streets and cars and sweaters with flags.

Cool! I didn't know you were in that neck of the woods FC!  Yeah, there is something about Portland that I have never seen in any other city. I have a friend that lives there, sounds like it is close to you. She was from LA originally, she says Portland is a dream in comparison. She lives just off of Division St., between 26th and 32nd.

I live in Calgary, and it does have a bad rep for big box stores, chains, etc. But, where I live kind of reminds me of Hawthorne, but with less nightlife. I am close to Kensington in the inner city. Lots of cool coffee shops, (indie coffee shops too), great pubs, record shops (vinyl), hemp shops, etc.

Sounds good, if I am down that way, I will write you a PE. I am kind of past my nightlife age, but still love a good pub and a cold brew..or 4..or more..Last September, I camped along the Oregon coast, very beautiful! Also, if you are ever around Calgary, feel free to contact me. Some of the best skiing in N. America is within 1.5 - 2 hours from my house.

  I've always liked well thought-out logic and reasoning.  [img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/more/bigs/c028.gif" border=0]
