Title: cougar attacks young boy
Post by: Hobbit on Aug 03 07 02:44
A [A href="http://www.virtualvancouver.com/news/news-45.html"]cougar attacked a 12-year-old boy[/A] who was out camping near Kamloops, BC. Some stranger came and fought off the cougar. When I go hiking I'm always a little worried about wild animal attacks such as from cougars or coyotes. Anyone ever been attacked while camping or hiking by a wild animal? And I don't mean attacked by your date. :)

I'm a little nervous of the same thing Hobbit.  I didn't used to be....but I seem to be now.

I haven't been attacked, but we rescued a lady who was about to be attacked once.  It was scary.

There was a series of switchbacks winding down from a cabin we were staying at, to the lake.  (Alta Lake)  She had walked right by two cubs playing between the two roads.  She had rounded the next hairpin turn and was heading down the road that would have put her between the cubs and the mama...(who we had just spotted)  charging towards her.  We hopped in our van and drove as fast as we could down the twisty road and pulled up to her...threw open the side door and dragged her in with seconds to spare.  I think she was more frightened of us for a few moments, until she realized what was going on.

Wow! That IS scary!! Talk about you being in the right place at the right time, PC.

I hope we never encounter these beautiful yet deadly creatures. I'm always on the look-out whenever I go hiking. Not just the cougars but bears too. I've even come across a... (I want to say fox but it isn't a fox, a wolf..?) when I was in Central Park of all places. It's tough. You want to enjoy nature but at the same time you're stepping into THEIR territory.

That's why I carry a bear spray whenever we go hiking.

It's tough. You want to enjoy nature but at the same time you're stepping into THEIR territory.    I like your attitude here Lise.

We are cautious in our own back yard.  So much development in the area has crowded the poor little guys out, and they're confused and sometimes desperate.  [/DIV]

No SD...there ARE wolves.  Central park (our Central park) has been having an ongoing problem with wolves.

No, it's not a fox. Definitely not a fox because the fur was grey and not light brown. It's a wolf... but smaller than one. Argh!!! The name escapes me for the moment.

                 Bear confronts Whitesnake singer
Rock star David Coverdale has been confronted by a black bear at his home in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.  Writing on his website, the Whitesnake singer said the bear broke into a guest bedroom on Wednesday morning. [/p] Coverdale, 55, recounted how he ran at the animal with an air horn canister and scared him into the garden. [/p] The British singer, formerly of Deep Purple, said bear attacks had become a "daily worry" and that authorities had warned he may have to move out. [!-- E SF --] [/p] His first face-to-face encounter with a bear came in July, as he was "rinsing a cup or two at the kitchen sink".
[/p]         "I don't mind telling you I almost succumbed to an involuntary bowel movement," Coverdale told fans online. [/p] The singer said he could feel the animal's breath on his hand as he closed the kitchen window, before he "ran around" the house to make sure all the other entrances and exits were secure. [/p] "I'd like to think it was the smell of my fab cooking that seduced him," said Coverdale, "but it was only a slightly charred bagel!"
[/p](http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44039000/jpg/_44039533_bear_203.jpg)
[/p]Global Warming its hot out, bear needs to cool off, hence the pool. duh wouldn't you go for a swim if you were a bear?[/p][a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6931439.stm"]http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6931439.stm[/a]

People need to stop feeding wild animals though, I was throwing papers this morning and some lady was feeding the deer.  WHY?!!!!  ugh  some people don't get it.  Don't feed wild animals!

Anyone ever been attacked while camping or hiking by a wild animal? And I don't mean attacked by your date. :)

Just arrived from Alaska, been charged twice by a grizzly near Muncho Lake BC on the way back. That was the most exciting wildlife encouter of this trip since I was in the car hehehe (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/3.gif) . Still, I managed to take a few pics, including one just a second before the second charge. Saw 2 grizzly cubs (biggers than adult black bears) running around the car 3 times near Greenville BC on the way north. Have some pics too but probably quite blurry since they were running at 35 km /h and I shot through the dirty windshield. Quite amazing to see the strength of these animals. Had other attacks in other trips too (a bison interrupted charge, moose fake charges, frigate birds in Mexico and johnny rooke (caracara) on Flakland Islands (by far the scariest, believe it or not...) these are the one I remenber for now.

Michel....I've got some good news for you....and some bad news.

The good news is, I believe you even without pictures.  The bad news is....there is no picture.
Title: Re: cougar attacks young boy
Post by: Michel on Aug 08 07 04:56
Thanks for believing me, Miss PC lol

Annoying those invisible pics, I just cut and paste it from my email at work and I see it here (at work), but I know there's a lot of pic that I can not see from here, but I see them at home. Anyway, the caracara pic is very dark, half cutted and kind of blurry since I tried to protect my face from his claws while taking the pic, so you can imagine what the pic look like... you don't miss too much.

These agressive caracara are called Johny Rook (spelling ?) and can only be seen on Sea Lion island, one island of the Falklands. They're studied by paleontologists who try to understand how dinosaurs were able to hunt in pack. These behavioural findings have inspired Spielberg for its velociraptors scenes in jurassic park.

According to the Falklanders raising shheps, these animals can killed little sheep by harassing them, exhausting them and frightening them. Once the sheep has broken a leg in it's escape, he's attacked by the birds. They go for the eyes first.

I had one intimidating caracara flying over me and the fellow of the pic. That one followed me like a dog on the beach and then scratched the top of my head with his claws twice. Luckily I was wearing a wool cap.

Here's another cut and paste of the first low flight and also a clearer pic of another caracara following me like a dog before another attack. (just in case anybody could see the pics...)

Imagine an eagle following you like a dog waiting to get a chance to bite you, you get the picture of the way I felt...

If anybody is interested, I have pics of a dead pinguin, his head remove by a caracara, and dead sheeps also.

Oh yea, sorry for the sceptic, I also got charged by a sea lion that same day lol, but ok this one I was top of a cliff and I pitched him some rock so that he move his big a**. lol, he charged to intimidated me but I was too high for that fatso of 900 lbs. Blurry pics availalble on request (I broke my camera on that trip)

Thanks for the info Miss PC, I tried but it didn't really work. Ah I don't know for you, but for me the link is better, still I would have prefer to post that image directly at that size, I use to be able to do it but not anymore. Silly me, I forgot how. Need practice...

Yeah it's an awesome beast as you said in another post, but not my best pic of grizzly. In tht last trip, I saw 17 grizzllies, 32 black bears and 2 cinnamon bears, mainly north of Terrace area and on the Cassiar highway for the black ones and south of Yukon near Kluane National Park for the grizzlies.

So that was the last pic that I was able to take before the second and last charge. He ran very fast and stop only 2 meters from the car, at that time I was already fast enough to lose him. Still, as I said before, he was the most exciting one. Not the prettiest, but the wildest one, that's for sure. (//forums/richedit/smileys/Teasing/4.gif)

After the second charge, I backed up to watch him again, but then other cars arrived, he then raised on 2 legs, he seems like 7 or 8 ft tall at that time, look in direction of the cars approaching and just disappear in the forest.

You'll be in a good spot to see some SD, Vancouver Island is very wild. Just play safe.

On a sad note, that bear will not live the end of summer if he stay near the road, way too agressive, conservation officers will kill him. Fortunately, it was a preey remote and deserted area with no humans around.

I just can't think what could happen to someone going for a  pee in the bushes, having a flat there (we got two by the way) or if a slow motorcyclist is passing there...

BC is wild, very wild, probably the wildest part left on Earth. Unfortunately, very hard to get into the land, not enough roads. I saw more wildlife in BC than in Alaska, and way closer also. Vancouver Island is famous for its killer whales and cougars. I'll go there soon, I moved to BC mainly for wildlife.

lol Yeah I like that pic for that, compare to other grizzlies peacefully munching on dandelions, you really see an expression on this face. This animal thinks, and it's not a preety tought...

I have a good grizzly mother pic with expression looking directly at me too, her cub was just a meter from the car at that time. Nice pics of the little one too. He stand up to look at me when I stand up "inside" the car with my door open to shoot over the bushes.

That's what I liked about BC too.
The west in the US is being taken over so to speak nothing is truly 'wild' anymore. Too many people.
wow I just looked at the schedule for outdoor events this semester at my school. Ones that interested me the most (for some reason tofino and surfing doesn't seem like fun, I'm not a surfer) mountaineering Mt. Arrowsmith, Piper's Lagoon (rock climbing), hiking the Juan de Fuca trail for two days, Strathcona Park hike, snow shoe trip mt. washington. Strathcona and mt. washington should be awesome because its in nov. and december hopefully there's snow on the ground. gosh I'm going to be busy.

While looking for a website with protected pics to chack the borken and others theory, I found this photo made by Andy Rouse about a caracara (aka johnny rook) attack on a baby gentoo penguin. Powerfull image that shows the agressivity of this bird who do not hesitate to attack sheeps and humans too.

I think seeing a track of a cougar is already as close as I'd like to get. ;) Don't want any face to face pics of a cougar... think I'd be too busy pissing my pants to remember to click the camera. Guess I could throw the camera and hope the big cat's in the mood for playing fetch. :)

The rule of thumb with cougars, is if you see one.....they've already been watching you for 15 minutes.
