I'm betting Canada will come back with 5 gold medals. Ha.That's how much faith I have in our team.

Oh I have more faith than 5 medals. We are not a summer sport kind of nation though. Just being there is an awesome experience for the athletes.

  [FONT size=5]GO CANADA [/FONT]for sure!!

Yeah, not to be a party pooper, but the world only knows Canada in the Summer Olympics for a sprinter on steroids. Oh well look at our dudes, we make East Germany's team look tame. hahaha

I'm watching the basketball games, root for the US to lose.

Anyone managed to watch the opening ceremony?
Title: Re: Go Olympics!
Post by: Sportsdude on Aug 08 08 11:34
Here in Amerika that isn't shown until prime time.
They were teasing it on tv earlier, saying it was the best they've ever seen. I have a sinking feeling Vancouver's is going to blow giant chunks, unfortunately.

You are probably right. I missed today's opening ceremonies, but I hear they were pretty amazing.

The world doesn't treat the Winter Olympics the same.  They are doing them at *YAAAAWN*...BC Place too.

Oh well. As long as there is a pothead snowboarder REPRASENTAN BC and Canada!! Oh yeah!!

I'm not one for flashy hooplah.....but I have to say, the opening ceremonies were the most spectacular thing EVER !!!!!!!   Unbelievable !  Engineering and technological genius.....  Heart, history, precision showmanship........I can't find enough words.....most impressive.

Well Vancouver's opening ceremony is going to be embarrassing.
NBC had a Chinese political correspondent with there coverage. lol

Feel bad for the U.S. Volleyball team, parents of the Men's coach and a player on the women's team were attacked at a restaurant on the first day, the dad died.

Anyway Tom Brokaw said it best about China. There are many China's 200 million living on 2 dollars a day, 300-500 or so are 'western' then you've got the ruling class. If you put it in that perspective, China is just like its imperialist days, ruling class, rich class, everyone else.

Anyway the bigger news is that Russia is back being an imperialist power again with the South Ossetia conflict.

Anyway in other News:

Yes SD, how dare China allow over a billion of its people who were living on $2 a day 20 years ago to enrich themselves and some to become middle class and the super rich.

Well, I'm just going by Brokaw, paraphrased what he said. Got a beef with him, email nbc. The extent of my history of China is from news clips, a couple books, a gf (which didn't help, she's from Taiwan and hates China with their 'wannabe world domination', lol) and friends, the Opium War, the movie Mulan and martial arts movies. lol
good times. lol

That relay was insane. French vs. Americans. crazy cool.

Politics aside, if I was an athlete, I don't think there could be a higher honour than being in the olympics. I respect these athletes a lot more than any NHL or NFL thug.
Title: Re: Go Olympics!
Post by: P.C. on Aug 11 08 07:28
I'm sure for them it is, Van.  I don't care about all the crap that's going on 'around' the Olympics.  I don't watch sports that I don't care for 'just because' it's the Olympics.  I just watch what I like and leave the rest.
Title: Re: Go Olympics!

All the gymnastics are pretty amazing too. If I had a fraction of the strength and flexibility, I would be a happy camper.
Title: Re: Go Olympics!
Post by: P.C. on Aug 11 08 07:40
That used to be my thing in my younger (more flexible) days.  Was pretty good at it.    NOW.....if I can make it from the lounge to the kitchen without tripping on the pattern on the floor.....I expect a 9.

I agree about the politics crap, that's only for the Opening ceremony. During the games it's about people who have trained for years for this one event.
The Chinese team looks like they can't be beaten in gymnastics.

Hey guys, don't know if you caught it, but at around 11 to 1am Canada's rowing teams just destroyed everyone. Unreal how good they are, the lowest stroke rate the men had was 40 strokes per minute, which is insane.

So Canada's going to get some gold medals tomorrow/tonight.

Yeah NBC has the gymnastics on, CBC probably the same. Media critics down here love the CBC coverage though, they don't fool around apparently and show everything live, no matter what time a day. (the big complaint against NBC). Although gymnastics is live only on the east coast and central. Oh wait, Vancouver's on the west coast, you won't see this live, better turn to CBC.

This article is in this mornings G&M, pretty much sums up Canada's sports media's cruelty toward the athletes. Apparently the writers have a defeatist attitude before everything even starts, how sad and pathetic.
[a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080813.wolymblatch13/BNStory/Front"]http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080813.wolymblatch13/BNStory/Front[/a]

'My Globe and Mail colleague Matthew Sekeres describes being at an event where a young Canadian athlete was asked why she'd failed, and reacted with "a look like her puppy had died."'

"There was also the time, in 1976 at Innsbruck, that Canadian sportswriters decided the country's women had no chance in the giant slalom, with most skipping the tedious trip to the ski hills. Kathy Kreiner of Timmins, Ont., then all of 18, roared to a gold; the sportswriters, me among them, scrambled desperately to catch a bus to get to the victory press conference in time.[/p] There are dozens of stories just like these; if you haven't heard them, it's because we don't write 'em."[/p]"As predictable as death and taxes, every Olympics features the traditional "Canada chokes" story.[/p] Less well recognized (and certainly less well publicized) is the fact that almost as traditional is the "Sportswriter eats his words" story, such as the time at Albertville in 1992 that one fellow retired for the night, serene in the knowledge that the start of his piece ("I fell out of bed last night. I wanted to know what it felt like to be a member of the Canadian team at the Olympic Games.") would endure.[/p] Alas, by the time he fell out of bed again the next morning, Canadian TV audiences had watched Kerrin Lee-Gartner tear to a gold medal in downhill skiing."

It's the crazy sports media, cruel bunch.

Apparently when I was listening to the radio yesterday, just showing up is sooo Canadian like winning the award for being nice or something. Apparently a lot people just want to win, I think they just care about medals, which is stupid. Once you go down the 'win only' road, you lose the sense of the Olympics and you become a US or China where the Chinese gymnastics coach said if they don't win 5 golds its a failure. I mean come on. Or lets say Phelps loses and only ties Spitz, media will see it as a failure. That's not what the Olympics means.

"The last time Canada won an Olympic medal in the 1,500 free was in 1920, when George Vernot took silver in Antwerp."

I thought it was a reasonable question.  Reading THIS article makes the stat a little vague and a tich misleading.  As was the story on this mornings news....which I had to rewind to listen twice.  So the question is more directed  at the source of the info and the common occurance of errors in the media.

You ARE correct.

BEIJING - A little known teenager from Victoria has ended Canada's swim drought at the Summer Olympics and made an excited declaration along the way. "We're really ecstatic to be Canadians now," said Ryan Cochrane, unable to lose the smile that had taken over his face. That wasn't something that could necessarily have been said earlier in these Olympic Games. [FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffbf"]Cochrane became the fourth Canadian medal winner of the Olympics and the first swimmer to earn a medal since 2000, in taking home a stirring bronze medal in the 1,500 freestyle event at the National Aquatics Centre on Sunday morning. Well for all that hullabaloo about Canada failing at the Olympics, the team has more medals then they did in Athens and are 2 medals away from being ahead of the Sydney games.

Most medals in the Summer games
22- Atlanta '96
18- Barcelona '92
16- London 1908
15-Amsterdam '28
15- Los Angeles '32
14- Sydney '00
13- Beijing '08
12- Athens '04
11- Montreal '72

'84s 44 doesn't count when half the world doesn't show up.

No hullaballoo here on worrying about medals.  I don't really care much about the medal part.  I know how dreadfully cliche it sounds, but I think that any athlete who has made it to the Olympics has succeeded.

P.C. I'm in agreement completely and share the same outlook, but apparently this is a 'typical Canadian attitude' that I hear from the media and some types of folks I've run into in Canada. Then I usually see or hear the line about being a mediocre country (which is a pathetic statement, but then again I love Canada so I'm bias).

oops sorry about that duh Munich was '72 and Montreal was '76. *hits his head*

[h1]IOC chides Bolt for lack of respect to rivals[/h1]
[h2]'He still has to mature,' president says about medal-winning sprinter[/h2] IOC president Jacques Rogge criticized Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt on Thursday for showing a lack of respect to other competitors after his record-breaking gold medal performances in the 100 and 200 meters.[p class="textBodyBlack"][span id="byLine"][/span]"That's not the way we perceive being a champion," Rogge said.[/p][p class="textBodyBlack"][span id="byLine"][/span]The International Olympic Committee chief hailed Bolt's stunning achievements in the two sprints, comparing him to American great Jesse Owens, but said Bolt should have cut out the look-at-me flaunting and acknowledged the other athletes.[/p]"I have no problem with him doing a show," Rogge said in an interview with three international news agency reporters. "I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters."[p class="textBodyBlack"][span id="byLine"][/span]Having built a huge lead in Saturday's 100 final, Bolt slowed, glanced around with arms outstretched and pounded his chest before crossing the finish line in a world record time of 9.69 seconds.[/p][p class="textBodyBlack"][span id="byLine"][/span]"I understand the joy," Rogge said. "He might have interpreted that in another way, but the way it was perceived was 'catch me if you can.' You don't do that. But he'll learn. He's still a young man."[/p][p class="textBodyBlack"]

LOL!

My theory is, "Play sports and games your own self, before indenting your ass shape on the couch all weekend watching olympics"

The healthier people are, the less drain on the health care system.

AND parents! Stop taking your kids to the doc everytime they have a sniffle!

"Research has shown that having sex three times a week over the course of a year    burns about the same number of calories as running 120 kilometres."

On average how many people run 120km a year? very few. lol

That's only .3km a day.  I put on at least that much running to the bathroom sometimes.

Running has got to be THE most unenjoyable excersise there is.  I'd rather do stairs, swimming, rowing, aerobics, weights......ANYTHING but running.

I discovered this year I can run, on really soft dirt surfaces. I last about 3 minutes on concrete.

.3km that's probably more per day then the average car dependent commuter.
Think about it,walk to your car, then drive. Walk to your office, sit all day. Then walk to your car your car, then drive. Then when you get home walk to the couch, walk to the fridge, walk back to the couch, walk to the bedroom, sleep. then repeat for the next day.
