how do people learn people's ip adress's. I thought it was private and that nobody else knows it.

For a message board, it depends on what capability is built into it, and how much the admins/mods are permitted to see. Some display IP info publicly but most hide it as it's considered to be "Personally Identifiable Information" (and as such should be shielded from casual view).

Your IPs are hidden here except to mods and admins. As a site operator I don't release Personally Identifiable Information without a valid court order: [a href="http://www.discoverseattle.net/w3c/privacy.php"]DS Privacy Policy[/a].

Neat.  I made it on the worst ever mods list.

That deserves some Karma. Enjoy!

Discover Seattle! / Hmmmmmm

I need a new name, I hate showing up as "Admin".

Maybe I'll steal Tenkani's idea and make myself an account under the name "TehBorken".

So in reality how much does it cost to keep this site up, and how much did it cost to build it, and if you don't make money off this site, why did you create it?

I built the site mainly because I liked the idea of a community-oriented site for Seattle, something that was focussed on Seattle and the surrounding areas. It wasn't built as a money-making kind of thing, it was just something I wanted to do for fun.

As for what it cost to build it, that's difficult to say. It took some amount of time to design and code, and there were some small purchases of software, plus the domain name fees and associated costs to host it. My time would probably be the most 'expensive' thing looked at from a dollars and cents perspective. The server DS runs on is about $99 a month, but I use it for other things as well so the costs are spread out and tricky to quantify.

num_replies=5.

What a silly value to have in the querystring. lol. That's the problem with scripting. You can't make too many calls to the database at one time.

Yep. This is one of the little odds and ends I need to clean up here (transform it into something usefully formatted).

all my querystring shit is built on the fly

So is all this stuff, as far as I know. It uses mod_rewrite to make the 'freindly urls', which I like quite a bit.

Sorry. What was the question?

It was: "How deep is the Marianas Trench in millimeters?"[font size="-1"]

How much do ads cost?

You mean to run a banner ad on a site? I don't know, I'm more of a publisher than an advertiser. I suspect it's expen$ive. I know that paying by the click can be amazingly expensive, paying by 'impression' is probably not as spendy.

I wonder what these guys are expecting from them.  I'd like to see them come up with some constructive ideas that THEY think would work, instead of criticizing.  If they've got some solutions, for gawwwds sake, SPIT THEM OUT.

Oh no, coming up with a sensible, workable plan takes all the fun out of being a complainer.

I usually try to go through the ad lists and knock out the most annoying ads, but it's a time-consuming process and they all have different start/end dates, so it's kind of a moving target.

I can't even imagine, in my wildest imagination, what possible grounds you would think you have to sue.

It's the American way- if you're not happy, sue someone! Too bad they have no substantive case whatsoever. (If they're stupid enough to make it into court, count on them getting hammered by the judge for wasting his time with a frivolous lawsuit.)

What on earth are you thinking ?????

They're infected with "Petulant Baby Disease", which means they aren't really thinking at all. This is a lot of hot air, and not anything to spend one second worrying about. In fact, I feel rather slighted that DS wasn't also charged in this hideous war-crime of "censoring posts".

the victim got hit with hunting spray.

Lol, that's such a cute, friendly term, I wonder why the cops never use it.

"Hunting spray" my ass. That's like saying the Titanic had a problem with 'ice-buildup'.

That's it! Way cool. I couldn't spot the guy I used to work with in their group picture, but I'd bet he's still there. I used to buy a few bottles of duty-free whiskey for him and he'd reimburse me. It was about 1/2 the cost of what he would have had to pay if he'd bought it locally.

He used to research (among other things) starfish bone, for use as a replacement in humans. It's very porus and our bone cells just grow right through it forming a long-term bone joint that practically disappears with time.

He was also researching the spread of DDT. Turns out that shit percolates its way into almost everything- plants, trees, animals, humans, everything. And it takes forever to degrade and become harmless. DDTalso  fluoresces brightly in a scanning electron microscope in 'electroluminescence' mode, making it easy to spot.

Ahh, the useless knowledge I've collected...

[div style="font-style: italic;"]I have eclectic taste when it comes to reading.....I like variety.[/div]
Ahh, a woman after my own heart. I have really eclectic tastes in reading too. I'll read almost anything short of the phone book. I don't do Westerns or Romance novels, but practically anything else is fair game. Like Mizbehavn, I like True Crime too. The library near me is really small, and when my son and I go there we clean 'em out on a weekly basis. They can't keep up with us.

only the cream of the crop will rise to DS.

As long as it's not the cream of the crap.
