Austrialia's Crocodile Hunter dies: media

  AP

Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, has died in a marine accident off Australia's northeast coast, local media reported on Monday.

Queensland state government sources quoted by Australian Associated Press (AAP) said Irwin, 44, whose television show "The Crocodile Hunter" won international acclaim and popularized the phrase "Crikey," was believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest.

He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred, the report said.

Sky Television also reported that Irwin had been stung by a sting ray.

Australian emergency officials could not immediately confirm the reports.

Irwin won a global following for his daredevil antics but also triggered outrage in 2004 by holding his then one-month-old baby while feeding a snapping crocodile at his Australian zoo.

I used to watch his program too.  He was funny and educational at the same time.  And I was scared for his safety every time I saw him.

Wouldn't it be hard on the children if she does carry on?

I do feel this is what Steve would want, he worked so hard at making people aware of conservation...he put his heart and soul into it and i think his wife understands this aswell.

kitten, yes it would be hard for the children, i'm pretty sure as they grow older they will understand how inportant there fathers work was.

Oh the childern will most likely follow in his footsteps. I equate it to Dale Earnhardts death, his son took over after him. Now here's a really bad example but Playboy for instance is run by Hefners 40 year old daughter.

Remember Irwin was the director of a big Zoo over there. His wife will now run it.

But I was listening to the BBC this morning while working and I think his patented jumping on animals is what unfortunately killed him. Sting rays don't attack you unless you step on them and we all know what Steve did to crocs by jumping on there backs. He must have spooked it and it stabbed him in the chest.  But in any case the world has lost a great ambassador to wildlife.

Soapbox, your remark makes me think of Peter Pan - the clock and the croc.

Farewell, Mr. Irwin.... though I don't particularly approve of you 'educational' method, you did bring a smile to me every so often.

I guess you died doing what you loved most and how many of us can say that?

Actually he had two thing when it came to death. He said if he ever died, he said keep rolling. Then he wanted his death shown on tv.

Yes, thats what he said he wanted them to do. Im sure that the video will eventually come out, it would have been in synch with his way of presenting wildlife. That being said, while i at times enjoyed watching his programs, he did tempt fate all the time. It was as soapbox said, only a matter of time.
