VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - This could be the worst year for berry crops in BC in the past decade, as the sunshine you see this afternoon is coming too late to make a real difference.

Some fields in the Lower Mainland have lost up to 70 percent of their potential crop. "Some sunshine now is going to make what fruit is left a little bit nicer, a little bit sweeter, but in terms of volume and even of the individual fruit, it's been severely impacted by the weather we've had over the last few months."    BC is the second largest blueberry growing region in the world, producing more than 60 million pounds in 2004.[/p]   Strawberries also will not be saved by this late burst of sunshine, although raspberries and cranberries might fare a little better.[/p]

NANAIMO - Wanna buy a Cuban "igar"?[/p] A Vancouver Island tobacconist has stripped the letter C from his "cigars" sign to avoid the wrath of the tobacco-advertising police.[/p] Alex Landels of A.J. Landels Cigars in downtown Nanaimo made the modification after someone from the enforcement branch of the Vancouver Island Health Authority paid a visit last week to see if he was meeting the requirements of a March 31 ban on tobacco advertising to people under 19.
[/p] B.C. retailers can still post signs advertising tobacco sales, but only in black lettering no more than five centimetres tall, on a white background, without naming specific brands.[/p] Landels is waiting for a new sign to be made. In the meantime, he's advertising Cuban "igars."

BC Government just announced joint project with City of Vancouver.  It's a fully retractable rain umbrella to cover downtown core.

Will also function as snow shield (eliminating cost of snow removal from streets) and sun/heat shield (reducing energy loads on air conditioning systems).

[span class="Font_size_C Font_style_B Font_color_A"]WASHINGTON - The International Space Station's lone toilet is broken, leaving the crew with almost nowhere to go.

[/span]                                                                   [div id="articleBodyContent" class="articleBody"]                                                               [span class="Font_color_B"][/span]So NASA may order an in-orbit plumbing service call when space shuttle Discovery visits next week. Until then, the three-man crew will have to make do with a jury-rigged system when they need to urinate.NASA says while one of the crew was using the Russian-made toilet last week, the toilet motor fan stopped working.[/p]Since then, the liquid waste gathering part of the toilet has been working on-and-off.[/p]Fortunately, the solid waste collecting part is functioning normally.[/p]Russian officials don't know the cause of the problem and the crew has been unable to fix it.[/p]The crew has used the toilet on the Soyuz return capsule, but it has a limited capacity. They are now are using a back-up bag-like collection system that can be connected to the broken toilet, according to NASA public affairs officials.[/p]"Like any home anywhere the importance of having a working bathroom is obvious," NASA spokesman Allard Beutel said.

McALLEN, Texas - During three years in the low minors, John Odom never really made a name for himself until he got traded for a bunch of bats.[/p]  "I don't really care," he said Friday. "It'll make a better story if I make it to the big leagues."[/p]  For now, Odom is headed to the Laredo Broncos of the United League. They got him Tuesday from the Calgary Vipers of the Golden Baseball League for a most unlikely price: 10 Prairie Sticks Maple Bats, double-dipped black, 34-inch, C243 style.

"They just wanted some bats, good bats - maple bats," Broncos general manager Jose Melendez said. According to the Prairie Sticks Web site, their maple bats retail for $69 each, discounted to $65.50 for purchases of six to 11 bats.[/p] Full Story:

How do you like your steak cooked?

What's your fave thing to grill?
 --

I like my steak still moo-ing (but give me seared fat and grill marks).
Start grilling with a room temp steak.
Marinade in soy, red wine, garlic, worcestershire (or skip the marinade and use heavy Montreal Steak Spice)

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - After enduring one of the coolest springs in recent memory, the upcoming long weekend is promising some warmer weather...dare we say 'beach weather'? If so, the Vancouver will be ready, as the city will be officially opening 10 beaches, along with outdoor pools, starting Saturday.[/p]  Lifeguards will be working at beaches stretching from Spanish Banks all the way around English Bay to Third Beach in Stanley Park. The freshwater beach at Trout Lake in John Hendry Park will also have lifeguards on duty.[/p]  Outdoor pools at Kitsilano, Second Beach and New Brighton Park open for the summer on Saturday at noon.

SANDY - Three juveniles who were videotaped putting a bag of human feces in a microwave at a Salt Lake area convenience store were arrested on Thursday, police said.

On Mar. 23, three teenage boys entered a 7-11 convenience store located near 2100 East and 9400 South.  After milling around the store for a few moments, police said they went over to the microwave and put a bag of human feces inside -- and then set the timer for ten minutes before leaving the store.

A few minutes later, the microwave blew up and sent the excrement and a putrid stench around the store.  The appliance was destroyed and the entire store had to be fumigated for a long period of time -- resulting in lost profits, officials said.  Overall, about $3,500 in damages occurred.

The store's surveillance camera captured the teenagers and the entire stunt.

[SPAN id=intelliTXT]  SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - It won't come with the ocean views, but you can still catch some thrills from riding your very own Ferris wheel, taken straight from the Santa Monica Pier.  The nine-story wheel that's been at Pacific Park since 1996 was put up for sale Tuesday on eBay.  The wheel overlooking the Pacific has 20 gondolas and is outlined in 5,392 light bulbs. It has provided some 3 million rides and has been seen in movies, on television and in numerous photos.  Next month, however, the Pacific Wheel will be replaced by a $1.5 million modern model.  The old wheel is operational and still in "great" shape, said Cameron Andrews, a spokesman for the amusement park.  The wheel cost $800,000 when it was built. It was modified in 1998 to become the world's first solar-powered Ferris wheel.  The auction will last 10 days and the minimum price is $50,000. Half the winning bid - minus fees - will be donated to the Special Olympics.  A support base for the wheel costs another $135,000, Andrews said.

[span id="article"][span id="article"][span id="intelliTXT"] MADRID, Spain (AP) - A burglar who broke into a funeral home tried to fool police by playing dead, but two things gave him away. First, he breathed. Plus, he wore grungy clothes rather than the Sunday best of those settling in for eternal rest.[/p] Police and the Crespo Funeral Home said Wednesday they had no idea what the 23-year-old Spanish man was trying to steal in the March 17 break-in at Burjassot, a small town just outside Valencia.[/p] Neighbors living nearby alerted police when they heard the front door of the business being forced open in the middle of the night.[/p] Police officers arrived with the owner, and eventually found the suspect lying on a table in a glassed-in chamber used for viewings of deceased people during wakes, a local police official said from Burjassot.[/p] "The custom here is for dead people to be dressed in suits, in nice clothes that look presentable. This guy was in everyday clothes that were wrinkled and dirty," the police official said. Department rules barred her from giving her name.[/p] "He was trying to fake being dead, but he was breathing," the officer said.

New feature!  Send emails dated in the past!
How do I use it?
[p class="spaced"]Just click "Set custom time" from the Compose view. Any email you send to the past appears in the proper chronological order in your recipient's inbox. You can opt for it to show up read or unread by selecting the appropriate option.[/p]
Is there a limit to how far back I can send email?
[p class="spaced"]Yes. You'll only be able to send email back until April 1, 2004, the day we launched Gmail. If we were to let you send an email from Gmail before Gmail existed, well, that would be like hanging out with your parents before you were born -- crazy talk.[/p]
How does it work?
[p class="spaced"]Gmail utilizes an e-flux capacitor to resolve issues of causality (see [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandfather_paradox"]Grandfather Paradox[/a]). [/p]
How come I only get ten?
[p class="spaced"]Our researchers have concluded that allowing each person more than ten pre-dated emails per year would cause people to lose faith in the accuracy of time, thus rendering the feature useless.[/p]   [p class="spaced"]Their findings:

P = Probability that user believes the time stamp
 φ = The Golden Ratio

[div class="articleCopy"]VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - No one has accused Ottawa of being penny wise but there may be some wisdom in the latest move to eliminate the one cent coin. Winnipeg MP Pat Martin is at it again, introducing a private members bill today to get rid of the red cent.[/p] He says they just weigh down your pockets or end up in jars. The legislation would mean retailers would have to round up, or theoretically down, to the nearest five cent mark on cash transactions. [/p] Debit transactions wouldn't be affected. On the street, most people like the idea. One man says he would like nothing more than to never ever have to see another penny in his pocket. He says he would rather have pocket lint than pennies as the coins are heavier and worth less.[/p] The Royal Canadian Mint did a survey recently and found more than 60% of small retailers like the idea and over 40% of consumers. Large retailers were mostly against the move, afraid it could limit how they price their products.
