   [DIV class=feed_details] [H4]Stewart Bell, CanWest News Service[/H4]Published: Thursday, November 16, 2006

[DIV class=para12 id=article] TORONTO -- A suspected Russian spy has been arrested in Montreal as he was about to board a plane to leave the country, capping a Canadian counter-intelligence operation that suggests espionage is alive and well long after the Cold War.

The man, who had been living in Canada under the name Paul William Hampel, was taken into custody by Canada Border Services Agency officers at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport at about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The arrest came after two federal ministers signed a security certificate last Thursday declaring him a danger to Canada for espionage, paving the way for his deportation. It is the first security certificate approved by the government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The case is described as highly sensitive and officials were saying little Wednesday. Investigators were trying to confirm the suspect's true identity and the foreign intelligence agency he works for, but the case is being compared to a 1996 spy operation by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service.

This is the first time Canada's controversial security certificate process has been used since the 2003 arrest Adil Charkaoui, an alleged al-Qaida-trained sleeper.

Well, on the way home I saw a HUGE tree that collapsed onto a house along 12th ave between fraser just before kingsway. The police and city workers had both of the lanes closed going towards kingsway except for one going each way on the other side of the street. As the tree had pulled out from its roots when it toppled pulling up half the lane and the green space with part of the sidewalk. Two houses look affected. Myself and my carpool buddy laughed, talk about Karma coming up...

When I got to the way down towards my house many branches had fallen and one tree along the block.

However, Im now soaked. We have one of those temporary/permanent tarp garages covering the 21 foot skiboat that my brother and I share.. You guessed it the whole thing had torn or shifted and was flapping. I was just down there tying everything togehter with strong ropes and putting stay ropes to keep the structure from moving or flexing... Then the leg on one end that I was just tying whipped out with a big gust of wind pulling one of the roof structure pieces and cracked the side of the window on my boat! It also smacked the gunnel side right below the window putting those fibreglass spider cracks into the newer gelcoat I had put on during the summer.

EDIT: I just went and looked again after relaxing and being inside for a while. The window looked cracked from beside it on the ground but when I went into the boat, it had knocked the window OUT of the aluminum window siding. Hard to explain. It is a little cracked, but if I put it back into the slider and reseal it with some window adhesive it'll be good as new. <cooler tempered head talking>

Grr. I have secured it ok now, but left the sides flapping to keep the wind from catching it.. Im hoping our house insurance will cover the boat as we took the insurance off the boat/trailer mid october; due to it being a nice weather boat and we couldnt see using it during the winter, lol.

Hope its better where you all are, or you are having abetter day and wind/rain experience

How many cups do you drink a day?

I myself love percolated, but it takes so long I only drink it on occasion or when camping. I was thinking about this on the weekend when I was away camping.

I normally drink drip coffee as I set it for when I wake up in the morning along with my brother if he remembers, and I buy a Timmy Hos on the way in the morning as well as one more there.

  I drink about 6 cups a day.

You get three choices max, if you think I forgot something or want to see something on there, just post up and Ill add it.
#126
And does it have any special meaning to you or someone you know?

I admit I asked someone this today, and got wondering about some others. Do you use different names on other boards??

Ill go first, lol. Russ is my name that my friends call me. I normally use RussFEST as my username on other boards, although I use Russ on DV which is why its still Russ here.

No underlying meaning of Russ, but Russ fest was given to me after I had an afterparty at my house when was young after a party call FraserFEST. The name stuck for years, and still does to certain people.

Saddam Hussein sentenced to death

Saddam Hussein remained defiant throughout his sentencing
Saddam Hussein has been convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging.
The former Iraqi leader was convicted over the killing of 148 people in the mainly Shia town of Dujail following an assassination attempt on him in 1982.

His half-brother Barzan al-Tikriti and Iraq's former chief judge Awad Hamed al-Bandar were also sentenced to death.

Former Vice-President Taha Yassin Ramadan got life in jail and three others received 15-year prison terms.

Another co-defendant, Baath party official Mohammed Azawi Ali, was acquitted.

Saddam Hussein and his co-defendants will be given the right to appeal, but that is expected to take only a few weeks and to end in failure for the defendants.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki hailed the conviction in a televised address, saying that the sentence was "not a sentence on one man, but a sentence against all the dark period of his rule".

"Maybe this will help alleviate the pain of the widows and the orphans, and those who have been ordered to bury their loved ones in secrecy, and those who have been forced to suppress their feelings and suffering, and those who have paid at the hands of torturers," Mr Maliki said.

The White House also welcomed the verdict.

"It's a good day for the Iraqi people," spokesman Tony Snow said.

When called to court, Saddam Hussein, dressed in his usual dark suit and white shirt and carrying a Koran, walked to his seat and sat down.

Judge Rauf Abdel Rahman ordered him to stand while he read out the verdict, but the former president refused to do so and had to be moved from his seat by court attendants.

As the judge began reading the death sentence Saddam Hussein shouted out "Allahu Akbar!" (God is Great) and "Long live Iraq! Long live the Iraqi people! Down with the traitors!"

The verdict sparked celebration in Baghdad but protests in Tikrit

The former leader looked shocked and furious as the sentence was passed, and continued to shout, denouncing the court, the judge and the US-led occupation force in Iraq.

But the BBC's world affairs editor John Simpson said that after his tirade, which was clearly deliberate, Saddam Hussein seemed to have a small smile of triumph on his face as he was led away from the courtroom.

"It was as if he was thinking 'I've come here and done what I intended to do,'" our correspondent said.

Shortly after the verdict there were jubilant scenes in the Shia district of Sadr City, and in the holy city of Najaf.

The Baghdad celebrations came in defiance of a 12-hour curfew on the city, amid fears of violence from Saddam Hussein's Sunni Arab supporters.

THE VERDICTS
Saddam Hussein, former Iraqi president: found guilty and sentenced to death
Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti, Saddam Hussein's half-brother: found guilty and sentenced to death
Awad Hamed al-Bandar, Chief Judge of Revolutionary Court: found guilty and sentenced to death
Taha Yasin Ramadan, former Iraqi vice-president: found guilty and sentenced to life in jail
Abdullah Kadhem Ruaid Senior Baath official: found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in jail
Abdullah Rawed Mizher, Senior Baath official: found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in jail
Ali Daeem Ali, Senior Baath official: found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in jail
Mohammed Azawi Ali, Baath official: acquitted

Three nearby provinces are also under curfew, including Salahuddin, which contains Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit.

Thousands also defied the measure in Tikrit - to voice support for Saddam Hussein.

Almost three years since his capture, soaring sectarian violence has brought Iraq to the brink of civil war.

Few Iraqis think the trial verdict will ease conflict, the BBC's Andrew North in Baghdad says.

Even those who want to see their former leader dead do not believe his execution will make things better, our correspondent says.

'Trial flawed'

Many critics have dismissed the trial as a form of victors' justice, given the close attention the US has paid to it.

Before the sentencing session began, former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark was ejected from the courtroom after handing the judge a note in which he called the trial a "travesty".

Saddam Hussein's defence team have also accused the government of interfering in the proceedings - a complaint backed by US group Human Rights Watch.

Celebrations and protests
The process was marked by frequent interruptions by defendants and their lawyers and problems with security.

The first judge assigned to preside over the case, Rizgar Amin, resigned after complaining of government interference and three defence lawyers were assassinated.

And the former leader's lawyers have attacked the timing of the planned verdict, which comes days before the US votes in mid-term elections.

US President George W Bush's Republican Party is at risk of losing control of Congress, in part because of voter dissatisfaction over its handling of the Iraq conflict.[!-- / message --][!-- sig --]

[DIV class=para12 id=article] WASHINGTON -- The U.S. median price of a new home plunged in September by the largest amount in more than 35 years, even as the pace of sales rebounded for a second month.

The U.S. Commerce Department reported that the median price for a new home sold in September was $217,100, a drop of 9.7 percent from September 2005. It was the lowest median price for a new home since September 2004 and the sharpest year-over-year decline since December 1970.

The weakness in new home prices was even sharper than a 2.5 percent fall in the price of existing homes last month, which had been the biggest drop on record.

The price decline for new homes came while the sales pace picked up, rising by 5.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate 1.075 million homes. It marked the second consecutive increase in sales following three months of declines.

The declines in prices served to underscore the severity of the correction in the once-booming housing market, which had seen sales of both new and existing homes soar to record levels for five consecutive years, propelled by the lowest mortgage rates in more than four decades.

This year, with mortgage rates rising through midsummer, sales have cooled considerably, with housing expected to trim more than a percentage point from overall growth in the last half of the year.

The debate is whether the slowdown will be enough to push the country into an outright recession. The Federal Reserve, recognizing the weakness in housing, halted a two-year string of interest rate increases in August and left rates unchanged for a third straight meeting on Wednesday.

The Fed, however, gave no indication that it planned to start cutting rates because of the weakness in housing, saying it was still concerned that inflation remained too high.

The 5.3 percent rise in new home sales in September followed a 3.8 percent rise in August and was the biggest one-month gain since an 8 percent increase in March. However, sales had fallen for three straight months from May through July.

The rise in sales last month was led by a 23.9 percent jump in the West. Sales were also up 6.9 percent in the South. However, sales fell by 34.5 percent in the Northeast and were down 6.3 percent in the Midwest.

In other economic news, the government said that orders to U.S. factories for big-ticket manufactured goods, powered by a huge jump in demand for commercial jetliners, soared in September by the largest amount in more than six years.

The Commerce Department reported that orders for durable goods rose by 7.8 percent last month to $226.7 billion. The increase followed two consecutive months of declines and was the biggest gain since June 2000.

The improvement was more than triple the 2.3 percent gain that Wall Street had been expecting, but virtually all of the strength came from a giant 183.2 percent increase in orders for commercial aircraft. Outside of transportation, orders were up a far weaker 0.1 percent.

In a third report, the Labor Department said the number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits rose by 8,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 308,000. That increase was in line with expectations.

The September 7.8 percent increase in factory orders followed declines of 0.1 percent in August and 2.8 percent in July. Despite last month's jump, analysts believe that the factory sector is slowing under the impact of a weakening overall economy.

The economy began the year with growth at a sizzling pace of 5.6 percent at an annual rate but saw that slow to 2.6 percent in the spring and analysts believe overall economic growth in the just-completed July-September quarter slowed even further to around 2 percent or less. The government will report the actual third quarter figure on Friday.

For September, transportation orders rose by 27.6 percent as the big jump in demand for commercial aircraft offset a 6.1 percent drop in orders to automakers, who have been struggling recently under the impact of weak sales of trucks and sport utility vehicles.

The rise in commercial airplane orders had been expected, given that Boeing Co. booked new orders for 175 planes, up from 30 in the prior month.

Can someone fill me in on the point of this? Im just confused on if it does anything. This is the only site im a member of that has this and its confusing me.

Does the plus bless come down over time, what about the negative side? If its in the negative, does it come up or get counteracted by the positive bless?

Deep useless thoughts here im thinking but I have to ask.
