Title: Share your Africa cam snapshots
Post by: Moolah! on Oct 26 06 02:16
This thread is for Africa cam pics only.

Whenever you see something interesting, can you take a snapshot or two and post here?

This way those

- like myself, who can only hear the sounds but can't view the cam

- or others who can access the cam but happen to be away at that moment

can have a sneak peek of what you've witnessed.

(Quick tip for those who don't know: ALT + Print Screen captures the image of the window you're viewing.[/DIV]

After that you can save the image either online or on your HD by pasting it into any image viewing/editing program.

Then post the pic like you'd post any other image.)

Isn't it a bit time consuming to paint what you're seeing and then post it here?

Why not post the original snapshot?

ALT + Print Screen captures the screen in memory. Use any image viewing/editing program, to paste your capture into that program. That way you'll have a way of saving it so you can post it here.

Alternatively, some image viewing programs do this automatically via a menu option. So if you have that use it if it's easier. What I'm describing is the old fashioned way of doing it.

I don't understand what you mean by this. I also didn't understand when you asked earlier whether I got the pic.

Did you try to email me a picture? Because I haven't received anything from you.

The reason why I created this thread is because I can't access that cam. So I'm not sure what you're asking me to post.

I tell you what, give me a URL of any webcam that I can access via dial up. I'll do a screen capture and post it here so you'll understand what I'm talking about.

OH I SEEEEEEE.  I didn't know you weren't able to view the cam.  I thought you were unable to view it AT THAT MOMENT......as we've all had difficulties with it occasionally.

It's all making sense to me now.

  Well then......never mind.

Ok, here's a demo... I'm using the paste method as opposed to screen capture.

If you're seeing a webcam image from Chiba, Japan then it's worked.

If not, I'll edit this message and paste a screen capture.

I see it.

When I do a 'screen capture'....the image is still in motion.

[A onclick="addImg('icon/061.gif')" href="jvascript:void(0)"](http://www.discovervancouver.com/forum/icon/061.gif)[/A] And lo and behold it's a LIVE image!

(Meaning, you'll see a different pic every time you refresh this page.)

Now wouldn't it be uber cool if something similar could be done with the Africa cam...

Ok, if it's still wiggling like a live shrimp, then see if you can paste it directly on to DS like I did with the Japanese cam.

May or may not work, I'm not sure. But worth a try.

I might have to retract the claim that it's a live image. It's not refreshing. However, the image I had copied was different than the one that showed up in my message.

DS can be temperamental when it comes to pastes. Sometimes it disables keyboard shortcuts. When ALT+Insert doesn't work for me, I usually do it through the browser's menu (under Edit, then click on Paste)

Funny, because that's how mine 'translates'.  I HAVE the picture on the screen capture, but it comes up as just the black window.

By the by.....I guess my sense of humour was a little annoying (pasting childrens' drawings of African animals) in light of the fact that you actually can't view the real ones.  Sometimes I amuse myself without thinking....lol

The incentive would be good karma and opportunity to share what you've seen.

Not on Africa cam but in general if you encounter a UFO or some other unique experience, however you have nobody around to share your experience then no one will believe you, which in turn might lead to your doubting the validity of your experiences.

So taking pics and posting them here of what you're seeing will be an affirmation of your existence. [A onclick="addImg('icon/icon_smile_big.gif')" href="jvascript:void(0)"](http://www.discovervancouver.com/forum/icon_smile_big.gif)[/A]

Thank you so much for posting these pics, Raging Poodle.  You're right, the camera focuses automatically, but catching them at the right moment is harder, unless you have it on all the time.  If I had a clue how to do it I would also post pics from the Africam, but since I don't, I will be happy to admire your posts.

Raging Poodle rocks! Yes, thanks for the image update. I keep missing these darn animals and don't have the time nor energy to sit and wait for cute little buffalo to grace my screen. The last time I looked were a bunch of baboons hankypanky and believe me it wasn't a pretty sight. At least it was short.
Title: Re: Share your Africa cam snapshots
Post by: Moolah! on Dec 24 06 09:23
These pics are sent to me via email as my bandwidth doesn't allow me to access the cam. That's why I want others to join in the sharing.

There's no need to keep it on all the time, or stand by and watch 24/7.

I understand there's more traffic around sunrise or sunset, but even at night there're all sorts of animals coming by for a drink. (The cam is night vision capable I think - 1-2 pics I posted before appear to have been taken at night.)

Kitten, check out my dialogue with P.C. in the first 2 pages. There're instructions there on how to capture and post these types of images on DS.

I'm still trying to figure out if that big headed animal in the second pic is a wild boar or rhino.

And speaking of baboons...

I think this is the same as the big headed one, but looks smaller:

When you try and save a screenshot and it turns out black
Try the following...

    * Open Window Media Player
    * Then go to Tools | Options
    * In Options, select the Performance Tab
    * Way below you click on the Advanced Button
    * Uncheck "Use Overlays'
    * Click Ok
    * And you are ready.

http://www.quickonlinetips.com/archives/2005/03/capture-images-from-windows-media-player/

This works for Media Player 11

Ok, seems we have a hosting problem. Thought I could link from my Google Picasa album as it is publicly accessable... but I guess not.

Thanks to Lise for the heads up, and 49er for the instructions.

Good thing we can edit our posts. I'll correct that message soon.

In the meantime you can access the album I mentioned @

[A href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Raging PoodleTalks"]http://picasaweb.google.com/Raging PoodleTalks[/A]

Eventually I intend to collect all webcam shots there, so it'll be like a back up for this thread.

Let me know if you experience any problems viewing it,

or end up seeing something you were not supposed to see. [A onclick="addImg('icon/icon_smile_blush.gif')" href="jvascript:void(0)"](http://www.discovervancouver.com/forum/icon_smile_blush.gif)[/A]

It's not difficult at all. I think someone who knows how to do this correctly needs to show you in person, or troubleshoot right there and then and fix if there's a problem of some sort.

You might also want to practice capturing images when it's quiet, so you won't feel rushed to read and understand the instructions while you see animals and want to take snapshots in a hurry before they disappear off the camera.

Wow. Now that I can see those images..... are those lions eating a buffalo? Eeeoooww.... I mean, good on them. Survival of the fittest, I guess.

I think it's a wild boar.

Or "pork" as EED would call it.

Yum.

Wit its horns, it would have to be a water buffalo.  They can't be all that easy to bring down.  They are supposed to be wicked fighters.

I took a closer look, adjusted the brightness on Irfanview, and was able to discern the horns.

Yup, it's a cattle, possibly a water buffalo as suggested by kitten.

One of these in other words  [A onclick="addImg('icon/icon_smile_big.gif')" href="jvascript:void(0)"](http://www.discovervancouver.com/forum/icon_smile_big.gif)[/A]

Not just for antelopes... locking horns and banging heads seem to be a favorite passtime there:

^ What are these? They look too thin to be water buffaloes.

I compared pics of water buffalo with wildebeestes.  Those are wildebeestes in the photos.

I think you're right. I checked out wildebeest photos on Google, they match.

They have the head of a cattle, but body of a horse. (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Other/16.gif)

(http://images.waarbenjij.nu/files/waarbenjij.nu/m/maspim/4300d77b5a690631894529/file93387841_kln.jpg) Quite common in Africa apparently.

The one that was being devoured by the lions was also a wildebeest, I think.

Check out these night time photos... maybe they're also looking for a tasty wildebeest to snack on.

I presume what they're using is not a 1st generation Logitech webcam given to them for free when they signed up for cable service. (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Teasing/4.gif)

That one was posted here before, can't remember on which page. Much easier to locate it through my album.

Hey maybe this guy would enjoy one of those,

Or maybe these 2 are squabbling over who should get the fattest centipede?

And how do you know these 2 are not looking for one either...

Wouldn't it be handy to have a nice wiggly centipede to use as bait to catch fish?
