Title: Favorite Sound?
Post by: TehBorken on Feb 28 06 09:01
Along the lines of "favorite word", what's your favorite sound?

I've always liked the sound of ice cubes in a glass. I don't know why, it's just a nice sound.

I love the sound of breaking open a fresh head of lettuce.  (I know it's odd, but I like it)

The sound of water running down a stream. That or it's the sound of peeing. * teehee *

A cat purring loudly.  So relaxing.

That's the sound of comfort....and it's a lovely sound.  Ahhh, contentment.

Puuuuurrring....... yes, I've heard a cat purr. It's a really funny sound. Too bad my dog don't purr. The only sound of contentment from him is a frenzy yap whenever he sees me with his food. And that's not relaxing.

The sound of a girl screaming while I'm f*cking her tight pussy.
Title: Re: Favorite Sound?

You know, Lise, seeing a dog wagging his tail frantically when you come home is a very comforting sight, even if he can't purr.  You know you are loved unconditionally.

That's so true, kitten. My dog's a bit psychotic (sic) when he sees us coming home. Barking his nuts off, * grin *... running around like a dog in heat.... well, bless his heart anyways. I'm just grateful he's learnt to bladder control in his excitement.

Reading this whole thread reminded me of an old memory:

I must've been 14-15 when I found a combination bike lock on the street. Of course it was locked, with all 3 keys set to zero, and no sign of the combination that would open it.

I think the topic of permutations had already come up the year before in my math classes, so I was aware of the difficulty in figuring out the right combination.

The lock stayed on my dresser for 10 days. Then one afternoon when I was lying down for half an hour, I picked it up and casually started fiddling with the keys.

Click, click, click... nope won't open. I kept on clicking and failing for at least 15-20 mins.

Then suddenly I thought I heard something: One of the clicks had sounded slightly different than the rest.

I left the 2 keys where ever they happened to be and started advancing the 3rd one, one by one, click by click... And when I reached 7 or 8 (out of a possible 10) I heard a "clack". Pulled the 2 ends of the lock apart and voila! It opened.  [img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/froehlich/a040.gif" border=0]

To this day people are amazed by what I can hear and smell.

However I haven't tried my luck picking other combination locks since that day.

Funny thing is, I never trusted my bike to that lock.  My thinking was, if I could open it, so could anyone else.

Good thinking good Times.  I've made a few of my friends snicker on occasion too, when it comes to sniffing out an odor.  I maintain, that I can SMELL when it's going to snow.  Oh sure....they all laugh until the morning, when we wake up under a blanket of snow.

Although it's pretty jarring, I love the sound of a race car engine (F1 or CART-type especially). Which makes it great when 20 or 30 of them all step on the loud pedal at the same time.
I also like trains in the distance. I also like the sound of ice crackling as a drink's poured over it.
And lately I really like the sound of a skateboard hitting the ground.[img]file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Compaq_Owner/My%20Documents/My%20Pictures/smilies/g060.gif" alt=""]

Hubby was at the F1 in Monaco.....and we have done the Indy in Vancouver.  He says there is no comparison between the two (except that they're both open wheel)  He loves his F1 racing, and says you absolutely can't 'be there' without ear-plugs.

I, on the other hand am tickled pink to finally have a car that just turns over when I start it up.[/DIV]Now THAT sounds good to me.[img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/more/bigs/c008.gif" border=0]

Wow! Cool Mr. PC ya got there. Indeed there is a big difference between fi/indy, I just wanted to differentiate from big ol' NECKCAR type throaty roars (which are alright too). That's cool he's been to Monaco, I was there in 76 but I was but a wee tyke and hardly remember it. I go to the Portland CART race every year. It was actually seeing it live like that that brought me back around to being a huge race fan. The first time I truly heard a start (even with earplugs-natch), the tingle up the back of my spine was indescribable-I've been hooked ever since.
Title: Re: Favorite Sound?

Monaco is up there on my list but I plan to visit Le Mans first.[/DIV]Indy 500 is overrated in my opinion. Hasn't been 'good' since F1 took it of its schedule in the 60's.

Let see there also is Spa on F1 circuit where half the track its raining and half it isn't. [/DIV]Like F1 sound bettter but this year they have rid themselves of the v10's I believe due to cost (damn ferrari) so the cars will have a rougher sound to them.

Being able to smell natural events is a well known, however often denied, olfactory skill we posess.

I forgot their names, there're natives living on an island off the coast of India, who were able to smell the tsunami before struck. They moved to a higher ground just in time and that's what enabled them to survive.

Their contact with the civilized world is minimal and they've been practising this for generations.

One of the things I can smell is what my neighbors are cooking. From the smell alone I can usually tell

- the cooking method employed[/DIV]- most of the ingredients[/DIV]- how it'll taste like[/DIV]- and what it needs to make it better  [img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/froehlich/e006.gif" border=0]

Title: Re: Favorite Sound?

Our sense of smell is one of our strongest nostalgic links.  For example, every once in a while, the smell of a roast pork, mixed with the smoky smell from the wood stove, combined with a few other elements, can put me so IN a place and time from childhood.  It's SO strong, that it  feels more like being transported in time, than it is a memory.  ...and it's not every time I cook a roast pork.....everything has to be just right.

Hubby checks the weather site every morning....but every evening before, I most often KNOW what it's going to do....and I'm most often right.  I'm running a better average than the meteorologists.

I have a friend who e-mails me the night before he golfs, to ask me if he should take his rain gear.  He calls me the witch from the north. LOL

My Grandfather used to tell me the same thing. He was right most of the time too. One day he taught me how to smell snow coming. It wasn't that he could describe it, he just told me to come outside and smell the air.

"See how it's different today" he said, "how it smells kind of tingly in the back of your nose? That's the smell of snow coming".

People think it's because I'm a Witch that I always know when it's going to snow. How do you explain that it's not because I'm a Witch, it's because I'm a grandson?

My boy is three years old now. In a few years I will start teaching him. I'll teach him how to smell snow, how to whistle with grass, how to make a flute from a willow branch, how to listen for rain in the song of crickets. I'll put my hand on his shoulder as he whittles his first rabbit trap, and I'll feel the hand of my grandfather on my shoulder. I won't turn around, but if I did I know I'd see a line of fathers and sons stretching back until the beginning of time. I am who I am because of them, and I pray my son will see them someday too.

Rain hitting almost anything.
The wafer-thin pages of dictionaries being turned.
Train whistles far away.
Church bells far away. (Though I don't like churches, or organized religion in general. It's just one of those things, I guess...)
The click of various latches shutting all the way.
The cry that newborns have for the first few weeks.
Tire chains on a newly snowy street, that nice squeak/crunch/jingle.
And I know I SHOULD hate it, because it may eventually kill her, but the sound of my mother smoking has always been strangely comforting. I would never tell her this.

Ooooooo, that's another good one primefactor....those deliciously thin pages......LOVE that, or onion skin, wrapping tissue and tracing paper.

I like the sound of snow too, although without the tires.  That cornstarch crunch when you walk in the silence.  It's a blended experience combining sound and feel.

...and as I was typing this post, it reminded me that I've always liked the sound the keyboard makes, although computers on TV always sound a little bit better.

Dorky as it sounds, I love the empty fullness of silence.

And sadly, I am forced to miss it, because I have some pretty bad inner-ear damage from antibiotics, so I have tinnitus which has gotten steadily louder and [span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"]louder [/span]over the years.

You never get to a point where you can tune it out, unfortunately. And I remember very clearly the sound of nothingness, and miss it.

Some nights the only thing that keeps me from wishing I was deaf is that I wouldn't get to hear any of the good noises either, the ones about which I was speaking earlier.

Hissing sounds (like tap water), crowd mumbling, and music are nearly intolerable to me.

That sounds miserable, primefactor.  I'm glad that you can at least hear the good stuff, but I too would miss absolute silence.  Absence of white noise, when the power goes out or that 'muffled' silence when you've had a good snowfall.

Eh, I've got nothing to whine about, really.  If they hadn't poured Gentamicin into both arms for a month solid, I'd be dead. I'll take a little ear damage any day.

The cool thing about having almost croaked when I was a teenager is that even now, twenty years later, I wake up almost every morning going, "Yay! Bonus day!"

It's good for perspective.

What an amazing person you are, primefactor.  I admire your courage.  I think that if I were to lose one of my senses, my sight would be the worst, followed closely by the loss of hearing.

Thinking of sounds, My favourite must be the sound of coffee perking first thing in the morning.  Oh, and the aroma....Mmmmmmmm!

When I was a kid, we had a glass coffee percolator, and one of my favorite visual comfort memories is watching the little blurps of coffee splat over the top of the percolator tube and spread into the water like brown mermaid hair.

primefactor and kitten, you're perking up some lovely thoughts.  (a little off topic, but I'm going to slide it in anyways)  I have this HUGE straight sided vase, that I never have enough flowers to fill.  But it still makes a nice centre-piece for the table if you do the fireworks in a jar thing) .  Your description of the coffee mingling with the water reminded me.

You've all got the juices flowing.  Been giving some thought to some unforgotten simple pleasures involving sound....the ones that almost connect us to our childhood.

Ice was mentioned, and I like the sound of ice cracking.... not in a beverage, but the kind of ice on a puddle.  That 'slow busting' sound.  I remember as a kid running to the next fresh unbroken frozen puddle.

I love the sound of a vegetable or fruit being torn like celery or something.

I also like the sound of a ship going through the water. when its stopped the most mesmerizing thing in the world, I dont care who disagrees with me,  is the rythmic sound of waves hitting the side of the ship.

wait are we supposed to have only one?

That's hilarious Russ.  I've always loved the sound of tearing apart a head of lettuce.  It's funny to hear you say that, because only last night I said that to hubby, and he said exactly the same thing.

I too like the sound of water against a boat, but for me, it's when in a small boat....like a little row boat.

Except when it makes you want to pee a lot. I bought one of those water feature and had to give it away. My husband complained it made go to the loo too many times. I think it's just an excuse...... (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

I love the sound of birds chirping when you're taking a long hike. There's nothing like the sound of birds and the wind rustling in the trees. No sound of the city. No people around. Utter bliss.

You're a romantic soul, Lise - keep it up, we're in a minority.

I also like the clicking of knitting needles when a wonan's sitting in the room , it has an almost soporific effect.

Back to the baby laugh.......ALL laughter is wonderful, some just better than others.  Hubby has an amazing contagious laugh.  Once at a restaurant, the owner came out and asked if she could tape his laugh to play when her employees were having a bad day.....lol.

Yes indeed.....water is a great sound.  Whether it's lapping against a boat or trickling down a fountain or dancing on your roof,  it always has an affect.

The incessant buzz of fluorescent lights in an office.

No, just kidding... I like things like wind and rain.... it's almost impossible to choose one sound.

Title: Re: Favorite Sound?
Post by: P.C. on Nov 17 06 09:43
You're right Trollio, so many sounds are wonderful.  But I find I'm more likely to associate a 'favourite' sound with something tranquil, soothing or relaxing.....like water.

Wind is frightening and powerful and reminds you of the force of  Mother Nature.  It's amazing and incredible, but it isn't something that makes me feel better.
Title: Re: Favorite Sound?

Taken the words right from my brain, P.C. There's nothing at all soothing about the wind; in fact I find it at all times unsettling and bad-temper provoking

A gentle breeze produces the opposite effect.  It's a lovely whispering sound.
Title: Re: Favorite Sound?

Depends on the circumstances I guess. Be on a ship off the coast here, the North Sea offshore Scotland, or offshore Southern Africa during the winter season. You will be scared of the wind and mother nature, believe me lol.

Other than that I myself like the wind gently blowing when in nature.
Title: Re: Favorite Sound?

Hmmm.... the wind blowing wind chimes is lovely though. The good wind chimes, not the cheap ones that just hurt your ears.

Only to a point, though.  After that it becomes irritating.  Several apartments here have them and some days it sounds like a noisy competition.

I tore down the windchimes we had on the back porch, nice for the first few weeks, then it drove me crazy, I could hear them all night long when my window was open.

What ones do you mean can be more nicer? I wouldnt mind having some up but the last ones drove me banana's
