I'm posting this because I know that a high number of users here also frequent Discover Vancouver.
I just opened a thread on DV and was hit by the most brutal goatse/virus attack I've ever experienced. Dozens of goatse windows began opening in random locations on my screen and Outlook kept trying to send emails to some f*cking recruitment drive. Wish I had written down the specifics, but I was a little busy trying to handle the chaos while at the same time hoping my boss didn't walk in and get a face full of goatse.
So I managed to shut down finally (a difficult process) and when I tried to reboot I got an error message saying that no valid boot device had been found *clutching chest* I rebooted again and it worked but I think that's because my work PC is set to rebuild the OS in the case of a critical failure. Anyway, the name of the thread on DV said something about viruses...I think it's gone now but the important thing is that simply OPENING an infected thread will HOSE your system if you're running WIndows 2000 and Internet Explorer. For those running Firefox or another OS, your mileage may vary.
I just clicked on that too. I submitted that a**hole for banning and deleted that thread and another one that he/she started.
Holy, my computer went wonkers. AND, it was a work computer. Oh SH*T!
The thread was titled "Attn Mods-Viruses" and me, I felt for it.
Damn, now I am so scared about clicking on any threads after that tragedy. I was so lucky that no one walked by because then, they would think that I was a porn freak and would've had to explain what I just clicked to cause such chaos. Yeah, same thing happened to me. My MS Outlook kept wanting to start a new email contact.
Don't blame yourself. When you're a mod and you see an ATTENTION MODS thread, what else can you do but open it??
The thing is, this asshat could conceivable just dump that virus into every thread on DV. Talk about bringing "life" to a standstill. DV would become a Firefox only message base overnight (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Teasing/5.gif)
That was truly a scary experience. I just hope that no viruses are on my computer. Yikes.

For what it's worth, I don't think that could be done here. I could be wrong (I'd never say never) but I'd be more than a little surprised if this board would allow that kind of code to run. But ya never know. It's pretty easy to turn off HTML here, and that's what I'd do until the proper screening code had been added.

This attack is very similar to one that happened a few months back from what I remember. It's just the "invalid boot device" thing and the Outlook part that was new.
Last time it hit, those using Firefox seemed to be immune. So for them, the thread would just seem like another in a long line of completely pointless DV threads.
Does this "canader" have the same IP as the one who posted the virus thread?

This is absolutely INSANE! This has to stop! I'm completely confused right now! Like I said, this is straight outta the f*ckin Twilight Zone. I am not the person who's doing this!! This all started in the "Go Canada Go" thread. My Avast! siren sounded and warned me about this site that was trying to load. I googled it, and found out that it was some disgusting site that was tries to attack your computer with disgusting pictures and some audio that says something about gay porn. So then I started a thread to warn everybody about it, and everytime I posted something to ask for help, ask what was going on, talk to the mods, warn people, etc...my posts were immediately deleted!! Unbelievable!! That particular thread about viruses stuck around long enough for 5-7 replies, I think...I read a couple responses and then when I went to check back again to see if a mod would finally answer me...IT HAPPENED TO ME AGAIN! So now there were two threads that I was affected by! You have since deleted that thread, but the I believe the original thread still remains. It's called GO CANADA GO.
So, then I finally got you to answer me in the thread entitled "Going to DS, sick of DV hackers" and I EXPLAINED myself and I thought everything was cool and then like an hour later, I GOT BANNED! WTF! Then I see you here posting my threads accusing me of being a hacker!! What is going on here! I'm am so f*ckin frustrated right now! I'm confused and I don't know what the f*ck is going on! canader was me, just once today...i used it in the CANADA russia hockey thread (go canada go) to report the score and that's it...until i started to get accused of everything. Then I just kept it when I was defending myself and warning people about the virus. I NEVER made a post saying I owned you. I repeat that was NOT me. I didnt even see that.

Yes Tenkani. That's exactly what I'm saying. I started it to warn everybody and ask why my Avast anti-virus just went ballistic in the Go Canada Go thread, then it got a couple replies, I was still waiting for a mod to answer me, and the second time I checked back into that thread is when I got bombed again.
I made that thread and it got infected after I made it.
I happened to click on that MODS:VIRUS thread, and my screen went nuts, etc. Freaky. Thinking back, wasn't there a thread with "fashion girl" or "celebrity designer" or one of those incarnations, warning that "payback time" was coming, for making fun of her? Although I don't think "fashion girl" was particularly brimming over with computer literacy, or any other sort.
Help, here's what I think happened. Just a theory.
1. You created a thread with the subject header something about a virus. A script kiddie immediately dumps the virus into the thread. A mod sees it shortly after it's created and opens the thread. His/her computer blows up.
2. You created a second thread with the title "MODS:VIRUS" or whatever. The script kiddie immediatley injects the bomb into that thread. The mod opens the thread and his/her computer explodes again.
3. The mod is f*cking pissed off, notes your IP after deleting the threads and submits your name for bannination. The mod can't go into the threads and investigate who injected the bomb since simply opening the thread is death. The mod assumes, since your threads were infected so quickly after beginning, that you are the script kiddie and thus you get a helping of hate. What do you think?
It's interesting that all this is happening again right after naughty priest resufaced. I opened one of his threads yesterday (maybe day before ?) and my computer went very strange. I think a few people said they had no problems with it, but I notice it's still there, and I notice there was not another response after mine.

I've said on many occasions that I am computer illiterate and it's true. So I don't even know what's possible and what's not. I don't know how someone can just insert whatever virus he inserted into any thread, completely undetected, and then have whoever started the thread get banned. This is way over my head. I don't even really care about the banning either. This whole thing is just f*cked. And this dude is still out there, so I don't want to go back anyway. It's just like being framed or something though. I'm just confused. I don't know what happened.

As far as being banned, it looks like for whatever reason Naughty Priest was trying, and succeeded, to frame you. Considering all the damage and chaos that bomb created, I think the confusion on the part of whoever banned you is understandable. I know you said you don't want to go back, but if you change your mind I think it's possible to unban somebody if it turns out to have been a mistake.
Happened to me upon opening two different threads on DV. Both times closed out all applications and started again and it was ok. But no more DV for me!!!!!
Still happening, eh? Okay, well I'm actually glad in a way...hopefully now they can actually do something to correct it. I've been here the entire time. And I'm not at all surprised that it's Naughty Priest - not the first time we've seen this. Yeah, I guess anybody could've made the mistake and thought it was me though. I don't have any hard feelings. This whole afternoon just threw me for a loop.
As long as my computer isn't infected with anything and none of my personal info was made available through IP stuff...I'll be happy. Anyways, I'm doing a deep virus scan right now, so my browser is a little slow right now, so I'm going to go offline for awhile and I'll check back later tonight.

I've read the comments here and also in several of the threads on DV. To prevent a similar attack here I've activated censoring on a few specific words.
The word "n i g g e r" (without the spaces) will be changed to "n*gger". If you're the kind of person that just has to type that word, it'll be changed. (This is because the site that people were forwarded to had that word in the domain name.)
The HTML tag for "HTTP-E Q U I V" (again, without the spaces) will be automagically mangled so as not to work.
It'spossible that someone could find a way around this, but not for long. I'll be adding a few more terms to (hopefully) make it much more difficult to pull this kind of crap.
Haven't been around DV... just read the latest update from you guys. Then I checked DV and got hit by the stupid porn pop-ups. Had to shut down computer. Found virus on "I love China" thread.

didnt anybody's anti virus catch it. i clicked on that virus link and my anti virus popped up and let me 'remove' it and closed my browser down before any damage was done. i ran my anti virus just incase and rebooted a few times just to be sure and it looks like i got off easy.
i use avast for my anti virus, which is free. i prefer this over avg anti virus. i have a pretty big host file that has alot of sites that points to my localhost so that might also help for future reference.
Well, color me stupid. I went browsing on DV again to see if there was anything new, and page 2 of one of the threads nailed me. Doh.
FireFox kept it from opening a zillion windows but it did manage to open Outlook Express and start sending emails....

I think so, but I can't guarantee it. The HTTP forwarding trick shouldn't work here, and even if it does I don't think it'll be able to go that site. The site has the word "n***er" in it, and when I post this it should 'censor' it by swapping the "i" with a "*".

After reading the comments here, I went to that site and clicked on some threads. And yup, it happened. Curiosity certainly can kill the cat!! I consider that as one life used up. Anyway I was able to close it before anything else happened. Now I'm wondering if it left anything on my computer. I already cleared the cache.

Probably not, but from what I can see this board should be pretty immune to the kind of hacks and hijinks that are being used on DV.
I don't have a lot of knowledge to back my suggestion up. Just that it seems like if you need to invest personal info to be a registered poster, would that not deter these buffoons ?

The only personal info required at this time is an email address. There are lots of free email services that people could use for "throw away" registration addresses so that wouldn't really slow a malicious user down much. If needed the board can be set to require manual approval of new members, but I don't think that'll be necessary.
But again, I think this board isn't as easily spoofed as the DV software is. One of the author's key goals is security and from what I've seen code-wise, it's pretty tight.

It would seem that every time DV has been haxxored it's been due to allowing the free use of html code in posts. Quite frankly I'm astounded that anyone with a discussion board would allow that. Any decent board script has that option turned off by default.
So far the code used by NP has bee relatively harmless, probably stuff he got off "L33T" wannabe boards. I know of some very, very nasty code out there which would cause some really bad crap. Let's hope he never finds it, 'cause it's obvious the board owners over there aren't going to fix the problem. No, I'm not stupid enough to go on a rant blaming the mods. I actually tend to check things like facts and to whom I may be speaking before making an ass of myself (that oughta be worth a few more smites from the anonymous coward).

Help- I'm not sure what happened there. When I saw a thread by Canader titled Attn Mods-Virus, I naturally clicked it and boom, my computer went bonkers. I then deleted the rest of the threads with your ip address before clicking on it for fear of infecting my computer and anyone else's. I then submitted your ip for banning because I thought that you had infected the forum. Your thread had to be deleted, regardless because it was infected.
It was certainly a tough call for me as we have had some tragedies on dv these years. From my experiences on dv, trolls/hackers and the like use rotating ip addresses so that they can play on the forum. I apologize that you were in the mess.

Holy sh*t, just went through the same hell on DV you guys were talking about here 3 days ago. Terrifying! Clicked on a random thread... didn't say anything in the title about mods or viruses. Scary indeed. Don't feel safe going there at all now! What the hell is the deal over there.

A few suggestions to make browsing a little safer everywhere....
1) If you don't use Outlook Express as your email client, uninstall it. It's an accident waiting to happen. See the info below on uninstalling it.
2) Turn on pop-up blocking.
3) If you use FireFox (and you should), go into the Tool - Options screen.

The "HACK PROOF THREAD" really is hack proof, and contains some advice for the DV'ers. I used an XMP tag (another little goodie that the DV idiots should filter, but don't) to prevent any follow-up replies.

I noticed that. I don't know. Borken would have a better idea. I haven't seen anyone else having this problem before. Many people post as Guest and they don't appear to have any problems quoting earlier messages or entering new messages with the right spacing.
I've basically had it with DV as well . The insanity was entertaining , but not worth picking up a virus to view it. Too bad, I still owe Federico for a couple of octuple absinthes.
