The DV "handle jackers" (called impersonators at the forums I frequent) are the worst! Nobody is safe. The site admin is a retard for not allowing registrations.

I had to switch to using a name that is slightly longer than you're allowed to type in the 'name' box there, and so far, no impersonators have succeeded. There was one attempt from a "Goat-TheRealOne", but even Superstar could see through it. Lame.

I agree. Although I wasn't banned from DV, I left for the same sort of reasons.

I am curious about one statement of your Adam, perhaps you could expand on it?

"I'd rather not have to sic lawyers on identity thieves, though I wouldn't be shy to do so."

Are you suggesting that you would have a legitimate cause for action against a handle jacker? If so, how would you propose to actually action it?

Well, so says the person going around DV reformatting the backgrounds and fonts in some threads...and you gave me heck for "sullying" your name as a "hacker" here on DS...that's the pot calling itself black my dear goatypoo...

People think they're anonymous on the net, but nothing could be further from the truth. Even using a proxy server doesn't really protect someone, because all that stuff can be traced. Live in another country? That's really no protection these days. In fact, using a proxy server helps the police make their case because it shows an intent to hide your identity. Couple that with malicious behavior and you're on your way to an expensive trial, whether you're convicted or not. Some of the people that have been getting away with this stuff are in for a big surprise, the RCMP and the american authorities are a lot further along than any of you realize.

Academe, notice how you appear to be two different people in DV and DS? In DV you seem to have a clue, in DS you don't. I'm like that too! Except the difference for me is hacking: In DV I do, in DS I don't. Clearer now? lol :)

Forum handles are not protected Adam. I would pay for your legal council if you were guaranteed to win. It is hardly identity theft. (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/10.gif)

Bah. They just figured out how to copy my name at DV. Either that or it's a mod trying to ruin my "good" reputation, haha. I've switched to an even longer one... if they copy that, I'm probably gonna stop posting there.

I think Adams' point is that it is NOT his handle.  It is his real name.  He'd be daft to think handle-jacking is in any way shape or form of identity theft.

BUT I'm wondering if he may have a teeny point.  Of course he would have to identify such with each post that it IS his real name. (???)

I don't think handle-jacking quite equates to a criminal act, whether identity theft or criminal impersonation. It is a low trick, although I've occasionally seen it done to quite humorous effect - for example, when a poster mentioned that he worked at the airport, and when someone asked him what he did there, a handle-jacker replied on his behalf, "I'm a cab-driver", I howled. The original poster even took it well. After all it goes with the (unregistered) territory. Like I said, it's a cheap trick, but I don't think we'll ever see a prosecution.

I don't think anyone would argue with that Adam.  The question is,  is a forum where 99% of the posters use an alias have any inkling that someone would actually use their real name.  My guess is you wouldn't have a paper leg to stand on.  They're kinda not stealing it......you're almost giving it to them.

PC makes a good point Adam. I've always thought that Adam Fulford was your real name. Sometimes I've thought that it was admirable and courageous that someone would use his/her real name. But I don't know that that's really your name. Neither do 99.9% of the other DV-ates. Here's an article from tomorrow's London Free Press:

 [A href="http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/Opinion/Columnists/Millar_John/2006/02/23/1457970-sun.html"]http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/Opinion/Columnists/Millar_John/2006/02/23/1457970-sun.html[/A]

There seems to be confusion about what the term "identity theft" means, especially when it comes to misappropriation of personal information.

In Canada, to be considered a theft, a person must take an actual "thing" involving a loss to the owner.

Someone who copies personal information from a computer or official document (with the exception of credit card and debit card data) and retains that information for future criminal use has not committed an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada. That's because the owner still has the information. All that is lost is confidentiality.

According to a discussion paper titled Working Together to Prevent Identity Theft, there are gaps in the Criminal Code, which, along with new technology and business practices, may facilitate fraud.

The discussion paper was prepared by the consumers measures committee (CMC), a forum of federal, provincial and territorial government officials co-operating to eliminate barriers to trade between provinces and territories. For information on the status of the CMC paper, see [email protected] using the subject line Question -- ID Theft.

Quoting from an Ipsos Reid poll, the paper reports nine per cent of Canadians -- 2.7 million people -- have been victims of identity theft at some point. The categories of losses reported included: financial loss, emotional distress, loss of reputation and the costs and time of rebuilding a personal credit rating.

The paper defines identity theft as "the use of someone else's personal information, without his or her knowledge or consent, to commit a crime, such as fraud, theft or forgery. Identity theft also includes the acquisition or transfer of personal information as an instrument to commit these crimes in the future."

Personal information is defined in the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) as: "Information about an identifiable individual, but does not include the name, title or business address or telephone number of an employee of an organization."

The paper appears to suggest that Canada expand its criminal law to address the acquisition, storage, transfer or sale of personal information.

I've never thought of it as courageous to post ones real name.  I think it's kinda naive and maybe even  at the same time a tad narcissistic and a bit self promoting. (no offense Adam).

When I first came to DV, there were a lot of posters that you knew you wanted to hear more from.  At the same time, it was immediately apparent that there were numerous posters that did not fall into that catagory.  Letting some of them know what continent I lived on felt risky.  lol

I was hoping someone else would point it out, since Adam doesn't like my pointers at the best of time.

Given the nature of DV and the lack of any registration, I doubt you'd be able to convince a Judge that it wasn't your own negligence that invited someone to use your name.

The other side of the coin is in getting a judge or prosecuter to care. I mean you havn't really lost anything except perhaps your reputation on a board at which reputation is not in the least relevant.

The other side of the coin (yes i know it's two many sides) is how do you prove who did it. Even if you did manage to get the ISP to tell you what account held that particular IP at that particular time, you'd still have to prove which actual person was sitting at the keyboard. If it were a case where you actually lost a huge amount of money, you might be able to get the assistance of the RCMP, but since it's just an anonymous message board which no one takes seriously anyways, it's more likely they'd just tell you to go home and get over it.

Libel and slander really only apply when actual damage results. Trying to sue because your feelings are hurt is likely to just get you laughed out of court.

P.C., I'm one of your biggest fans, and am happy that you're paying attention to my antics. Makes it all worthwhile.

You know what, I don't really care about harmless satire at my expense, as long as it is clear who the real Adam Fulford is.

I'm registered here, so there ain't no mistake as to who I am now.  I simply don't post in DV anymore, where I have been kindly banned (if my projects take off, it'll look like banning Picasso from drawing pictures in your coffeehouse).

P.C.,  I'm not narcissistic. I do promote myself, I admit.  As a writer/producer, I have to, and the appearance of my real name in forums has helped in Google ratings and suchlike for networking purposes.  It is part of a wider guerrilla marketing strategy (that worked wonderfully for last year's famous "Script Secrets" seminar by William C. Martell in Vancouver, who, by the way, is presently working on some major big-time movie projects).

BTW, there have been succussful slander lawsuits against internet group posters in the past, so there actually is legal precedent, but that's honestly not where I'm planning to spend my energies.

But when an officer walked into an apartment Thursday night to answer a 911 call, an orange-and-tan striped cat was lying by a telephone on the living room floor. The cat's owner, Gary Rosheisen, was on the ground near his bed having fallen out of his wheelchair.

[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]Rosheisen said his cat, Tommy, must have hit the right buttons to call 911.

[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]"I know it sounds kind of weird," Officer Patrick Daugherty said, unsuccessfully searching for some other explanation.

[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]Rosheisen said he couldn't get up because of pain from osteoporosis and ministrokes that disrupt his balance. He also wasn't wearing his medical-alert necklace and couldn't reach a cord above his pillow that alerts paramedics that he needs help.

[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]Daugherty said police received a 911 call from Rosheisen's apartment, but there was no one on the phone. Police called back to make sure everything was OK, and when no one answered, they decided to check things out.

[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]That's when Daugherty found Tommy next to the phone.

[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]Rosheisen got the cat three years ago to help lower his blood pressure. He tried to train him to call 911, unsure if the training ever stuck.

[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]The phone in the living room is always on the floor, and there are 12 small buttons — including a speed dial for 911 right above the button for the speaker phone.

[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]"He's my hero," Rosheisen said.

As I told you before on DV, Fulford, you're a damned fool for posting your real name on a discussion forum like that anyway. You're the type of guy who would go to a street hooker, get robbed, and then go to the police, all the while thinking your self-righteous arse would be in the right.

If you tried to bring a legitimate identity theft case based on what happened on DV into a court of law, they would laugh your miserable arse out of there.

You need to grab a bottle of Xanax, man.

Trollio, since I'm not doing anything to be ashamed of (i.e. the gutter-minded example that your foul mind conjured), I have no problem using my real name.

Writing abusive language  behind an anonymous name is a cowardly thing to do, and that shows what you are Trollio -- a sniveling anonymous coward.

You entered a internet minefield like DV of your own vocation and now you want to sue people who use your name, as if you are the only human alive who has that name?

Do a Google search... go right ahead. Your "philosophy" of getting your name up higher on the Google engine has resulted in the third listing being a post from DV calling you a "big faggot". In fact that comment is right there in the Google description. Congratulations. The first result isn't even you.

You make people want to 'handle-jack' you. Too bad, because you obviously are an intelligent guy. But you're also a nudnik.

It doesn't bother me.  I wasn't the one writing that retarded homophobic insult.

Well look, if you're reaching for the brass ring of fame, why not grab your own domain name and have all of your contacts/colleagues link to that?

You're right.  The Adam Fulford at the top isn't me.  Strangely, people have often gotten us confused.  I speak Chinese and was living in China, involved in film and TV projects there.  The other Adam Fulford speaks Japanese and has been involved in film and TV projects there.  People assumed that he was the brother of journalist Benjamin Fulford, who is based in Japan, but he isn't -- I am.

I don't seek fame.  I simply seek to get my film and TV projects produced, and will occasionally take on other gigs, such as promoting last year's highly successful Vancouver "Script Secrets" Seminar by William C. Martell, author of Ninja Busters.

So get the domain name, and pay a little to get someone to set up a site for you if you don't want/know how to do it yourself. A guy like you has no excuse to be without it, and it will only help your business.

A guy like you also has no business over at DV, which is Sick Goofball City from start to finish. Read Pirkei Avos 1:7... if you're going to play it straight, stay away from schmucks. ;D

Some of you are aware that DV banned me from posting there.  At first, it disconcerted me, but I'm really glad that they, for whatever misguided reasons, blocked me from posting there.  It is a cesspool of tired topics such as "Who is Your Favorite Porn Star?".  Now, I don't have to deal with handle-jackers trying to smear my name.  If anybody does post with my name at DV, you'll know it is fake since I can't post there. When Purelife asked if I wanted to be unbanned from DV, I said, "No."  I'd rather not have to sic lawyers on identity thieves, though I wouldn't be shy to do so.  Instead, I can enjoy Discover Seattle, a forum that has attracted refreshingly creative and intelligent people, and relatively few ditto-heads.  [/DIV]
I think DV banned me too - well, if being banned means that you can send in messages which don't appear. I also feel it no great loss as the content (especially since Christmas) had been becoming more and more juvenile by the minute.

They're doing something, or trying to do something at DV. Sometimes my posts get through, sometimes they don't. They could be using timers or limits on the number of posts, but whatever it is, it seems uneven.

For example, I've got some kind of block on me, but other people are just posting away with all kinds of things that are just as bad as what I wrote over there. Neither my user names or the IP seems to be banned. Other trollish types have sort of disappeared as well, but others remain. They don't seem to have a method, but I never expected them to anyway.

The difference here is that you know what you're dealing with, and you have moderators who don't make it worthwhile for a troll.

I'm a text troll, not a tech troll. In otherwords, I'm not interested in messing with the forum itself, but I have thrown many bombs in what I say. As you can see, I have promised to behave here.

Could you please explain to me how they would trace that?

Before we start down the long highway on this subject, take a look at [a href="http://discovervancouver.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=76728"]this link[/a] for context.

It's about police in the US doing the same things on their own message board that DV says is no longer allowed on theirs.

Your technical question is kind of easy. It all depends on what you're doing. Even using proxies, somebody (in this case the proxy) is recording what you're doing. If the cops show up at the anonymous proxy ISP and say "User X is using your cloak to distribute live stream kiddie porn", the proxy ISP (if they are at all human beings) will give User X up like a birthday present.

Other countries make it harder sometimes, but this thing called the internet is all connected together. If they really need to get you, or if nothing else find out who you are, they almost always can.

The symbiotic relationship between DV and DS is fascinating. It's almost as if no one realizes that you're in two different countries.

It's called a subpoena, and they work quite well. Don't expect any ISP or web site operator to go to jail on your behalf, they'll give the police everything they want as soon as the subpoena hits their desk. Even proxies in unfriendly foreign countries (China, Korea, etc) can now be traced with a nifty little trick called "action correlation".

Also, In order for proxy admin to give up user X, they need to have recorded his IP address. Unfortunately, though (or so I thought) most proxies do not keep IP logs. Furthermore, most hackers connect through multiple proxies, dramatically reducing the chances that they can be traced.

Last time I checked subpoenas had no power in Sudan, Hungary, China etc. so why do they provide any information?

And as far as ISPs go; there's something called rotate13 and base64 encoding.

Why do you think you have been "banned" from DV? I know why I would be knocked off, but I don't understand why others who have done much worse are not affected.

They don't have to. Research "action correlation" and you'll see why. I suspect you won't find much on it, but if you know where to look... :)

And as far as ISPs go; there's something called rotate13 and base64 encoding.

Again, a lot of this is irrelevant now to some degree. They don't necessarily need to track all the stuff they used to. The way action correlation works is they look at "what happens when" and use it to connect the dots.

If they observe you flicking a light switch up and down and also observe your porch light going on and off, they don't need to trace the wires back to the power plant to make a connection between your actions and the light going on and off. It's being used to track actions through IP-opaque countries and proxies. Server records are not needed except as confirmation.

Has ANYONE been informed of why they're banned from DV? I still haven't a clue. Some enlightenment would be useful.
