OK. I want to buy a pink shirt for my man. Is it considered 'gay' (sorry to the homosexuals out there) to buy one for a man? A man wearing pink is cute.... right?????

Hit the grossness factor yet?

Ground up beetles found in yogurt -- carmine serves as insect-based food coloring ingredient.

This is not a joke: there are ground up red beetles being used right now as a food coloring ingredient in yogurt, ice cream, juice drinks and many other grocery products. The ingredient is called "carmine."
Carmine is literally made from dried, ground-up red beetles, and its coloring (bright red) is used in yogurt, juice drinks, candies, and a long list of other products, including many "natural" products.  It's not that these red beetles are dangerous. Except for a few individuals who suffer severe allergic reactions to the beetles, most people do just fine eating carmine. Beetles are probably good for you, just like ants. High in protein, low in fat... you get the picture.

But there's a grossness factor that probably explains why products using this ingredient list "carmine" instead of "powdered red beetles" on the label. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has even petitioned the FDA to ban carmine(1), or, at the very least, require its clear labeling. The CSPI cites a study conducted by the doctors at the University of Michigan (headed by Dr. Baldwin, University of Michigan Medical Center) that demonstrated carmine can cause a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis -- a condition that can put a person into shock and require hospitalization. But these reactions are extremely rare.

WHY DO MANUFACTURERS USE CARMINE?

People tend to buy foods that look good. The redder the juice drink, for example, the more "alive" it looks. That's why we pick bright-red apples and bright-orange oranges in the grocery store. The vibrant colors tell us, "This is ripe and healthy!"
It's no surprise, then, that consumers purchase food products with vibrant colors. Carmine adds this vibrancy and color to foods, making them more appealing to consumers. In other words, if it looks good, we are more apt to buy it.

There are also technical reasons why carmine is a useful food coloring

I admit... I don't know much about hockey but can anyone help me out here?

  a) Did BC ever won the Stanley Cup? If so, what year?

  b) I know the Stanley Cup has never made it back to Canada (the Oilers came close but no dice)... when was the last time it was here in Canada?

  c) There's a movie out there based on Maurice the Rocket.  Is he considered the greatest hockey player or has Wayne Gretzsky (spelling?) the greatest?

  d) Did the Canucks make the playoff? OK, I haven't watch any Sports news lately but judging from the lack of Canucks coverage in the newspaper, I take it that's a big fat NO?

  Thanks in advance.

Discover Seattle! / David Emerson
Apr 03 06 06:20
Not that I know much about politics in general but it seems so wrong to switch from one party belief to the other the following day.

And update on what's been happening to him.
Anti-Emerson protesters take message to Ottawa
A small plane circling overhead with a banner urging  David Emerson to "call home" greeted MPs as Parliament opened today.

The banner was purchased by Manuel Perreda, a Vancouver-Kingsway resident and member of the Campaign to de-Elect David Emerson, a loosely knit community group that formed in reaction to the former Liberal minister's defection to the Conservatives two weeks after the federal election.

Like others who have joined the anti-Emerson protest in recent weeks, Perreda said he's angry over the politician's decision to cross the floor, and he wants Emerson to return to his riding and address his constituents' concerns directly -- a request that Emerson has, so far, refused.

To that end, Perreda -- who said he voted Liberal in the last election -- fronted the $1,605 cost of the banner, though he was hoping to recoup some of that expense from campaign supporters who attended a "democracy walk" in the riding on Sunday.

"Something has to be done," Perreda said Sunday of his involvement in the Emerson protest, now entering its eighth week.

I'm sorry to do this here. I posted this at DV too but this little girl's story need to be told. And if you can help, pls do. Visit your local blood bank. Thanks for reading.

   Three-year-old needs bone marrow

By Simone Blais - Staff Reporter

Family and friends of a three-year-old Vancouver girl are asking the Asian-Canadian community in the Tri-Cities for help.

Kelly Voros, the administrator for BCIT's electrical and computer engineering technology program, is sending out flyers and invitations to everyone on campus to contact Canadian Blood Services for screening. Her co-worker's daughter, Makoda Suen, is in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant.

"The reason why we're looking to the Tri-Cities is that we know there's a big Asian population there," Voros said. "Makoda was adopted from China, and that's why her parents aren't a match to donate marrow.

"That's why it's also more difficult for them to find a match."

Makoda, who just turned three, was diagnosed last year with an aggressive form of leukemia. She was successfully treated at B.C. Children's Hospital and went into remission six months later.

"They've been battling with this for a while," Voros said of her co-worker and the family. "She was in remission, but this week, (the cancer) hit again.

"Apparently, with this kind of leukemia, when it hits the second time, then the person has to have a bone marrow transplant."

Voros said BCIT staff found out on Monday that Makoda had taken a turn for the worse, and Thursday learned that the little girl's condition deteriorated to the point where she was admitted to Children's Hospital on Thursday for five days of intensive chemotherapy treatment.

She said the family is devastated about the news - as are BCIT staff.

"Because (the mom) is our co-worker, we all watched the process when they were adopting that little girl and what a joy that was when Makoda came here. And then, within a year for her to be stricken with leukemia, it was so devastating to the family," Voros said.

"We were all waiting to see what we could do, and now that it's at this crisis point, we've started a flyer campaign."

Voros said she's printed 3,000 flyers about Makoda's plight and the family search for a bone marrow donor. The flyers have been posted throughout the college campus and distributed directly to staff and students.

"People are just touched, especially the young students. The young people didn't even realize that this is something that they can do. They always say, 'You can give people marrow?'" she said. "You can see it in their face that they want the flyers and want to help."

While doctors haven't been able to give the family an idea of how long Makoda has and they remain hopeful that chemotherapy will lengthen that window, Voros urged everyone with Asian ancestry to contact Canadian Blood Services to be tested to see whether or not their marrow could help Makoda survive.

"If potential donors go on to the website, all the forms are on there. You used to have to go to a workshop, but now you can do that all online," she said. "I think you just go in for a blood test.

"The procedure itself is quite a simple thing to do, but has a huge impact - that's Makoda's life. If we can find the right person, that will save her life."

ù For screening information, visit the Canadian Blood Services' website at www.bloodservices.ca and click on the link for "Bone Marrow Donor Registry," or call 1-888-2-DONATE.

BLECH. How utterly gross is this?

[B style="FONT-SIZE: 14px"]LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- An online casino has a piece of Capt. Kirk.

Actor William Shatner has sold his kidney stone for $25,000, with the money going to a housing charity, it was announced Tuesday.

Shatner reached agreement Monday to sell the stone to GoldenPalace.com.

"This takes organ donors to a new height, to a new low, maybe. How much is a piece of me worth?" he said in a telephone interview.
