After 10 years....

After 10 years we finally broke down and decided to get a new TV. Now we just have to find a place to put this behemoth. (The old old old one is on the top, the new one (55") is on the bottom.) $479 for a 55" TV at Best Buy.

We were (literally) wheeling this giant f*cking box out the door at Best Buy last night and the door guard guy asked us to show him our receipt...we just said "no thanks" and kept on going.

FFS, we either just bought it or I have the biggest balls west of the Mississippi. Which is more likely? So no, he didn't get to see our receipt. I don't buy shit there to be treated like a shoplifter so I never ever show them a receipt.
The real trouble with reality is that there's no background music.

Have it built into the ceiling, so that you can lie on the floor and watch it.

Yeah, right above the bed. :)

I'd thought of that as well, but had too much decorum to even hint it.

Thank you. Yeah, I like it so far. :)

I had a friend give me an old blue-ray player with a remote but the remote never worked (he thought maybe it was from a different player).

The box will play discs, but without a remote it's not much good. While I was getting an old "learning" remote out to try and program it to the blue-ray player, I figured I'd give the non-working remote one more shot before tossing it out.

Lo and behold, it worked. IT'S A MIRACLE, THANK YOU O MIGHTY LORD. I have no idea why it didn't work before but it's fine now.

I still might drop the $40 or so so for an uber-cheap blue-ray player with wifi so I can send/stream stuff to the tv.

So far so good, though, I cued up Saving Private Ryan for a test and it looks pretty good on the screen.

I think the first movie I'm going to show Sakha is Groundhog Day, partly because it's a good movie and partly because I happen to have it on disc.

Any suggestions for other movies? Preferably stuff that might be easy for her to follow along, perhaps?

I know some movies are a little challenging for her to follow because of the dialogue- a lot of slang or Americana-type references won't make any sense to her. For us it would be like if the actors were speaking half their lines in Greek or Klingon or Norwegian. Any movies you want to suggest would be welcome.

We watched Groundhog Day last night with mixed results, lol.  :)

Okay, so we got a new blue-ray player that has built-in wifi. The blue-ray player connects to the internet to do all sorts of stuff (weather, music, hulu, netflix, etc etc), but one thing it can do is stream youtube videos to the TV...Sakha tested the system this morning by playing a bunch of Khmer music videos (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Khmer+music), and I kid you not, they ALL sound almost exactly the same.

Even the video is the same- lots of couples drinking beer out of plastic cups (!!) and dancing in a dirt clearing. I'm not making this up. They all sound the same and look the same, same music, same scenes...it's just weird. Sakha was dead on when she said that "Khmer people don't know music". lol

I also watched part of the BBC Planet Earth series (on blue-ray) and HOLY SHIT it's astounding. All shot in HD, and it's totally eye-popping stuff. The DVD version looks nice but the blue-ray version has embarrassingly better video. Can't wait to watch some porn on it, lol, it'll be damn near life-size. :) :)

I don't think they'd go down well in the west.

Honestly I think you could set the player to "repeat mode" and no one would notice for days.

And you're right, most Westerners think that Khmer music is pretty awful. They're just....bad. :(

So far we've watched:

Gangster Squad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1321870/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) - she liked it (lots of action and car chases and explosions)
Inception  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1375666/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)- a dreadfully bad movie, but great visuals/CGI. We both hated it, echhh.
Goodfellas  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099685/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)- she loved it (lots of action and shooting). She was amazed that it was a true story.
The 6th Day (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0216216/) - eh, it was okay. It had enough car chases and explosions to keep her interest, lol.
The Expendables (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1320253/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) - She loved it. Non-stop action from start to finish with no pesky plot to distract the viewer.
The Expendables 2 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1764651/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3) - Same as above, she loved it.

So, I think my wife has the "Micheal Bay" gene...that is, she likes action and lots of it. No dreary scenes where actors babble on about existential shit or have deep conversations regarding this or that. No. She wants shootings and explosions and car chases (and hopefully the car chases end in a shooting and/or explosion).

I borrowed a bunch of DVDs that I hope will fit the bill...

   The Terminator (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088247/) ("Thuh Tahminaytah")
Zombieland (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1156398/)
Full Metal Jacket (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093058/)
World War Z (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/World%20War%20Z)
Kill Bill (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266697/)
Paul  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1092026)(I dunno about this one, supposed to be "very funny")
District 9 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1136608/)
