Shaw internet issues

I was just curious if anyone in the Vancouver area that uses Shaw internet has issues with intermittent connection problems during the bad weather?

As per the norm, Shaw blames my equipment and they have no issues.

This is the second round at this time of year that the connection poops out on me.  It seems to be with the cold, rainy weather.  During the dry warmer days, it's like gold, but when the fall hits, the connection drops (modem never drops, just the connection...long enough to boot me from a webpage, or online game server).  I get 'request timed out' when running ping tests.

I have even tried Telus (big mistake) and they had to drop the speed down to dial-up speed just to make it more 'consistent'...um right, and the modem still dropped.  Telus at least had a reason as to why it was their fault...it was because I'm in the middle of the two nodes...so no matter which way I get put, I get slow service from them.

But Shaw...rarr, where's the reasoning behind my crappy connection...

Anyone else going through this or have gone through this and know what to do?  or say to the asstards at Shaw?
If you say "plz" because it's shorter than "please", then I'll say "no" because its shorter than "Yes"

Hi Isis,

We have Shaw internet and I too notice that when it's considerably windy/rainy during the nights, then the internet slows down or doesn't work at all.  It seems to happen in the middle of the night when most are fast asleep so I don't really bother with contacting Shaw.

BUT - We actually had a problem with them a while ago where the modem was constantly slowing down or shutting off causing our internet to stop and go anytime during the day.  It was damn frustrating and we knew it wasn't the weather.  After speaking to several Reps who gave us crap back, we finally got one Rep who said that he would send a Technician out to our home to check out the unit.  It turned out that he ended replacing our modem and that the box outside was damaged.  He fixed the outside problem and after that, our internet worked great.  To show that Shaw was sorry, they gave us a few months of their highest speed of internet which was really nice for us.  We definitely took advantage of that by downloading a ton of things since it was fast.

I hope you're able to get things sorted out with Shaw soon.  You're right, Telus is terrible for internet and I had them before we decided to chose Shaw.

This thread answers all the problems.

A) The one PL mentioned where it could be a cable issue on your end
B) They have issues and haven't dealt with it.

Thanks for the info gang...but as it happens, we have had at least 10 visits by shaw technicians and they have done their normal routine:

  1. switch our modem (twice)

2. switch our cables (three times)

3. blamed out computers (but they worked just fine with shaw at our old place)

4. fiddled with the building connectors

5. fiddled with the in-suite connectors

6. blamed our computers

7. blamed our computers...etc..etc...you get the point!

Needless to say, we don't call them anymore because they are a bunch of tools.

We are now looking at getting a load balancing router to share Shaw and Telus together (since we have both, when one fails we are currently switching to the other)...does anyone have any info on the LBR's?

I checked out the other provider that services downtown...that made me cry seeing that kind of service...bad side is, I know for a fact there's no fibre-optic cables in our building (Telus can't service HD TV or Extreme Internet here and their techy said is was so), otherwise, that would be the best option right now.

Anywhos....if you guys know about the LBR or know anyone that has one and their feedback on them, it would be great if you could pass it along.
If you say "plz" because it's shorter than "please", then I'll say "no" because its shorter than "Yes"
