Uhm...... what are shingles? Ye gods.... really, I have no idea how a roof works. Where does one obtain tar to put on the roof?

oh dear Lise.....lol   These would be asphalt shingles....so, if this is the kind of roof you have....you stand a better chance of being able to fix it yourself.

I hope it's nothing serious Lise but I agree with P.C. that it's something that needs attention asap.

Wow!!! Those are some really nice ones! I like them but no, I don't have that type. It's more like this one. I told you, I sucked at home stuff.

Oh oh.  I think you should call someone Lise.  Terra cotta roof tiles are interlocking (I think)...so you really need to go into your attic and look for water stains on the sheathing to locate exactly where the water is coming in.  Like 49er said....where the stain is, isn't necessarily where the leak is.  With any luck, that's exactly where it is.  But knowing where the water is coming in, could equip you with a little 'insurance' against someone telling you the whole roof is no good.  So find out BEFORE you call someone.

Yeah... I figure it's a bigger problem. Maybe when we get a bit more $$ we can switch to having those lovely asphalt roof tops you were showing. It could make a big difference later on in life.

Thanks for all the help and info, PC. Will keep everyone up-to-date on what's happening.

Hope it's a quick fix Lise.  We spent 10 K on a new roof.....which REALLY hurt.....lol.

Your roof is way superior than any roof made with asphalt tiles Lise. If you put asphalt tile on your roof, you will lower the value of your house and will have to change your tile many decades earlier.

I think it probably is as well Michel....although I've never understood how a porous material can be effective in a cold wet climate.  Their intended use is for warm arid places.  If they behave anything like terracotta pots, then I don't get how they can work here at all.  They hold the moisture, then as soon as there is a frost, the expansion upon freezing causes them to crack.

I think their tiles are a different proportion of cement to clay.  Terracotta tiles are very expensive here....but they're one of those things that their cost isn't necessarily an indication of superior quality.  Shipping costs are super pricey because of their weight....so because we are the way we are....we think that their pricey tag means they are a quality product.

Hey all.

At least get someone to come look at your roof lise. You might be able to find someone to come look at it for nothing. Free estimates or whatever it is. It might be an easy fix.. it might not.

Michel is right, the tile roofs are better than teh shingle. The nice thing about your roof lise is that its usually easy to see a problem with it.. as long as its cleaned and maintained.

We had the old tar and gravel roof on ours.. and it was a problem cause it kept on cracking and leaking. We had a number of leaks in our roof. we crawled the damn attic so many blasted times. After the third repair.. we got roofers in and had them put on the aluminum roofing. Cost us 10k, but they came in and did everything in one day, new facia boards that were metal, and also new gutters. Its a 75 year roof with 50 year warranty.

How old is your house. Who did the roof? There might be a warranty on it. Or guarantee anyhow.

Good luck.. keep us informed! At least call around and see if some roofing companies will do estimates for fixing your roof.

It could be the sealing around your skylight.. I do remember something about alot of older generation skylights leaking.

I agree.. I thought about it as I was writing that paragraph above you! lol.

I still think you should get someone to look at it to see if its simple fix. If its left unchecked, like others have said it will damage more.
