Get set for a shower – but you won’t need an umbrella for this one.

The Perseid meteor shower is an annual favourite with stargazers across Canada. Shooting stars regularly zip across the sky on any night but every mid-August Earth slams into a cloud of sand-sized particles in space that cause a whole downpour of streaks of light in just a few hours.

Peak time is from 10 pm August 11 into the following morning until 4 am. No binoculars needed, just look up, generally face a northereastly direction, where the Persieds appear to come from. For the darkest skies and best part of the show wait until after the blinding Moon sets around 1 am.

From a dark locale you can expect to see as many as 120 meteors per hour at peek time. For those under the bright skies of city suburbs, expect a shooting star about every two minute. But straggler Perseids can be seen from August 8 til August 14. Get set to make a lot of wishes!

I never miss the meteor shower.  Last year we drove to the beach to watch because we have no sky.

*brings back memories.  I remember once, when my son was very little, while we were laying on sleeping bags in the yard watching the meteors.....and he asked "Mom...what kind of meat do they eat"

50 km from any city light, and ideally after the moon is below the horizon. Too bad it was not last week end, the moonless skies north of the island were  AMAZING.

We used to take our sleeping bags and HUGE bowls of popcorn onto the roof of the Ebony Lounge to watch the meteor shower.  And if I remember correctly....I used to get up there by climbing up the tree with the agility of a monkey.....lol.  Now I get up there like a sloth......with a ladder.

We're going to try to head out somewhere dark when my hubby gets home from work around midnight.  Should be FUN!
