How about that track and field event where you jump over pools of water. That's another goofy one.

In the insane 1500m free swim Canada gets a bronze. First time Canada medalled in this event in 88 years.

Why do you always question me?!! NBC said it had been 88 years since a Canadian medalled in the 1500m.

"The last time Canada won an Olympic medal in the 1,500 free was in 1920, when George Vernot took silver in Antwerp."

I thought it was a reasonable question.  Reading THIS article makes the stat a little vague and a tich misleading.  As was the story on this mornings news....which I had to rewind to listen twice.  So the question is more directed  at the source of the info and the common occurance of errors in the media.
You ARE correct.

BEIJING - A little known teenager from Victoria has ended Canada’s swim drought at the Summer Olympics and made an excited declaration along the way.

“We’re really ecstatic to be Canadians now,” said Ryan Cochrane, unable to lose the smile that had taken over his face.

That wasn’t something that could necessarily have been said earlier in these Olympic Games.

Cochrane became the fourth Canadian medal winner of the Olympics and the first swimmer to earn a medal since 2000, in taking home a stirring bronze medal in the 1,500 freestyle event at the National Aquatics Centre on Sunday morning.

Well for all that hullabaloo about Canada failing at the Olympics, the team has more medals then they did in Athens and are 2 medals away from being ahead of the Sydney games.

Most medals in the Summer games
22- Atlanta '96
18- Barcelona '92
16- London 1908
15-Amsterdam '28
15- Los Angeles '32
14- Sydney '00
13- Beijing '08
12- Athens '04
11- Montreal '72

'84s 44 doesn't count when half the world doesn't show up.

No hullaballoo here on worrying about medals.  I don't really care much about the medal part.  I know how dreadfully cliche it sounds, but I think that any athlete who has made it to the Olympics has succeeded.

P.C. I'm in agreement completely and share the same outlook, but apparently this is a 'typical Canadian attitude' that I hear from the media and some types of folks I've run into in Canada. Then I usually see or hear the line about being a mediocre country (which is a pathetic statement, but then again I love Canada so I'm bias).

oops sorry about that duh Munich was '72 and Montreal was '76. *hits his head*

IOC chides Bolt for lack of respect to rivals

‘He still has to mature,’ president says about medal-winning sprinter

IOC president Jacques Rogge criticized Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt on Thursday for showing a lack of respect to other competitors after his record-breaking gold medal performances in the 100 and 200 meters.

“That’s not the way we perceive being a champion,” Rogge said.

The International Olympic Committee chief hailed Bolt’s stunning achievements in the two sprints, comparing him to American great Jesse Owens, but said Bolt should have cut out the look-at-me flaunting and acknowledged the other athletes.

“I have no problem with him doing a show,” Rogge said in an interview with three international news agency reporters. “I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters.”

Having built a huge lead in Saturday’s 100 final, Bolt slowed, glanced around with arms outstretched and pounded his chest before crossing the finish line in a world record time of 9.69 seconds.

“I understand the joy,” Rogge said. “He might have interpreted that in another way, but the way it was perceived was ‘catch me if you can.’ You don’t do that. But he’ll learn. He’s still a young man.”

People are catching on to this guy's unsportsmanlike conduct.
