Hudson's Bay Co. says it is set to pass on some of the benefits of the Canadian dollar's strength by cutting prices by anywhere from 5 per cent to 25 per cent on a number of everyday household items at Zellers stores across the country.[/p]  The cuts, which are to take effect starting Friday at all Zellers's 298 stores, follow negotiations with the company's suppliers and will cover products such as Pampers diapers, Windex and Glad garbage bags, HBC spokeswoman Hillary Marshall said.[/p]  The early Friday announcement from the iconic Canadian retailer — now, ironically, U.S.-owned — comes a day after Bank of Canada Governor David Dodge urged consumers to demand better deals from retailers, which, so far, have mostly declined to cut prices in the wake of the loonie's surge to parity and beyond with the U.S. dollar.[/p]  It also comes a day after another U.S.-owned retailer, Wal-Mart Canada Corp., said it will chop Canadian prices for video games to U.S. levels, pricing "hundreds" of new releases at parity, as the Christmas shopping season rapidly approaches.[/p]The campaign is currently confined to Zellers, but Ms. Marshall said there is nothing to stop the company from extending it to its four other retail divisions, the Bay, Home Outfitters, Fields and Designer Depot, which, in all, boast 282 outlets. It also plans to extend the range of products covered as it is able to reach new deals with suppliers.
A key reason retailers in Canada have been slow to lower prices is that the high loonie fattens their profit margins. But the pressure is growing, and Zellers's move will ratchet it up still further, economists say. commentators say.[/p]  "This should force the hand of competitors to trim prices as well," Laurentian Bank Securities economist Sébastian Lavoie said in a note to clients Friday, commenting on the retailer's announcement.[/p]

Whoohoo!  Great for Canadian consumers, but how is the high dollar value affecting our exports these days?  Anyone know?

depends on your export. Although the high dollar even affects the oil and gas sector. Plus with raw log exports BC isn't getting much anyway since the BC Liberals don't care about the local saw mills or local economies and killed the "social contract" when they got into power.

they'll eventually cut prices all across the board since wal mart is doing that.
And sony has said all PS3 related items will now be the same as the US.

Well, that is one seemingly honest retailer.  What about allllllll the others.  It has been about a month since the dollar reached parity.  I heard on the radio yesterday that we won't see price reductions til after xmas.  Hmmm.  Rip off, or what.  If I didn't have to wait so long at the border, I might consider shopping a little in the states.

A few questions, why are books around $3 - $5. more here than in the US?  Why does it say, for example on a book $7.99 US and 10.99 Canada?  Why not just $7.99US?  Same for magazines.  I know there is shipping to Canada involved, but they have to be shipped all over the States, too. And, while I am on the subject of books, why do they print only hard cover versions of books before paper backs?  I know some people like hard covers to collect but why not print both at the same time so we have a choice immediately?  Seems hard covers are just a waste of more trees.  And it seems archaic to me to print hard covers for just released books and then many months later, print a paper back.

Lil Me

Hey fletcher!  I share your frustration about hard cover/soft cover editions.  However, I know that the libraries bulk purchase multiple copies of hardcover new releases, because the soft cover editions aren't durable enough to remain in circulation very long.

Lil Me

Agreed, Michel.  My softcover books are fine for me.  And I'm pretty tough on books- carrying them around in bags, reading outdoors, falling asleep on top of them.

Besides the enviro concerns, I dislike hardcovers because they're too heavy to carry around!

Well, I do.  The economic nuts and bolts might not be totally interesting to everyone, but they are important.  And they affect us all.
