I grew up in N.Van.

I remember the air raid sirens
I remember the drills that preceeded those sirens.
I remember having to duck and cover.
I remember carrying a paper ? gas mask. I think it was paper.

Just some questions.  Please respond honestly

how old were you ?

were did you practice the drills.

What school ?

N.Van ?
Van ?
Surrey ?
New-West. ?

Some other country?

I grew up on the East Coast, and as far as I know, there weren't any air raid drills.  We didn't have them in school.  I'm referring to World War II, are you?

I am not referencing ww2, kitten.  These drills were practiced in the early 70's I also grew up on the west coast. I think I am one of very few children of that time to actually have grown up practicing these drills. I also think more Americans from the Cuban crises grew up doing this, than Canadians.

I think you are right about that.  I know kids practice fire drills at school, but I can't recall having heard anyone say that they had air raid drills.  I heard that those were common in the States during the Eisenhower years during the Cold War, but I don't know how true that is.

I remember air raid sirens......but I don't remember air raid drills.

It's interesting that you brought this up, because many years later, as an adult, I thought about the terror that would strike me as a child when I heard them....and yet I really had no idea what they really meant.

It led me to all kinds of odd thoughts.  I even entertained the thought that I wondered if I had lived in another time. (I know....weird)  But the level of terror didn't match any of my actual life experiences.

  *I was raised in Van.

Also.....we have those same sirens where I live, for the volunteer fired department......and the same terror still strikes me today. (only momentarily.....but it's still there none the less)

All the old brick schools had air raid sirens (probably still do?), but I've never heard them.

I really should have logged in to create this thread...

yeah I remember the sirens going off and being scared silly... i remember the duck and cover drills... and the only people I know who did this in the very early 70's are all English (as in u.k.) or other children who went to my school... I have not (yet) met any other adults who did these drills...  though a few others remember the air raid siren drills, the TV station and radio station announcements... like had this been a actual emergency....  I even remember the route to the designated meeting area and who was to open the bomb shelter...

P.C. i do not think I am remembering a previous life... just remembering parts of my childhood... though very few others in there mid thirties have these memories... does this make me weird ?

Oh no Orik.  I meant that I've wondered if I was remembering a previous life.  I hope you don't think I was insinuating anything.  Those are thoughts that I've had, about where the terror came from with no real life reference.

And now that you've opened this up....I'm having really vague snippets of memory of air raid drills. (but not in the 70's)  Really vague.

how very odd pc. i never thought you were insinuating anything hon... i was just responding to your thoughts is all... you were thinking of a possible previous life...  shrugs .. memories are odd... i remember nothing about my childhood... except parts and pieces, i could not tell you who my friends were or who the teachers were but i remember cub scouts and first aid lessons.. duck and cover drills... assembly's... evacuation drills (and i am not talking fire drills here) i do mean actual evacuation drills... practicing of putting on a gas mask... training to use fire extinguishers... i got some odd memories.... shakes head...

i remember falling out of a tree (broke my best friends fireman's helmet) better that helmet than my skull i guess.... i have no recollection of getting stuck in a tree upside down by my ankle but my mum says it happened, according to mum, dad had to come rescue me, lol.. i remember the creepy janitors area we had to go to clean chalk erasers... i mean the janitor was creepy...  maybe he was creepy cause of that giant gas furnace... ah well ...

i  hope to find some other people around my age (35) who remember this training... these drills... i think pitbull did the duck and cover drills... though she is a tad older than myself... and i am not even sure if is the same pitbull as the one from dv...

i also asked this question before but it never garnered any responses... (mind that was on that cesspool forum dv)

  Phewww !!!!

Memories ARE weird.  My oldest sister can actually remember being in her CRIB.  My memories are patchy as well.  I remember the oddest small things so vividly and yet have zero recollection of significant events.  But mostly my memory isn't so much what I can or can't remember.....it's more of the chronological order of things.

I would never disagree with my sisters on WHEN something took place, because I have been known to be YEARS out.

*I think I'm straying from your topic......but it may make a good topic on it's own.

Nope. Growing up in Australia there was no real need for air drills. Fire drills maybe but definitely not air drills.

Do they still have them here?

I remember 'air raid drills' as a kid, but they were really used as a call out to the on call firefighters before pagers were common.  I was probably 7 or 8.
