[div class="standalone"][span class="label"]POSTED: Thursday, November 30, 2006[/span][/div]It's hardly even news anymore when somebody boycotts a business for selling certain things, sponsoring certain TV shows, playing certain music, and so on.[/p] So, maybe we're ready for the next logical step.  In Italy, two politicians have called for a Christmas boycott of  the furniture giant IKEA, for not selling Nativity Scenes.[/p] That's right. For [em]not[/em] selling Nativity Scenes. [/p] Oh. Athiests, too? So, we're all clear on the boycott plan? Even if you don't recognize the Nativity story, we'd still like you to boycott a store that sells bookcases that are hard to put together because they don't sell Nativity Scenes that would probably be just as hard to put together?

Italy senators want IKEA boycott for Nativity snub
ROME (Reuters) - Two Italian politicians called on Thursday for a Christmas boycott of Swedish furniture giant IKEA for not selling Nativity scenes, which Catholics in Italy traditionally put up in their homes around Christmas.

IKEA said it had never sold Nativity scenes -- featuring figures of the baby Jesus in a crib, Mary and Joseph, shepherds, animals and Three Kings bearing gifts -- because it is "not part of the Scandinavian tradition" its shops promote.

But conservatives senators Alfredo Mantovano of the National Alliance party and Gaetano Quagliariello of Forza Italia called on both Christian and atheists to boycott IKEA's 12 Italian stores in protest at what they called "anti-Catholic prejudice".

"In IKEA shops there is no lack of ethnic sculptures going back to animist religious traditions, and little Zen gardens, so their anti-religious prejudice seems to be anti-Catholic prejudice," they said in a joint statement.

IKEA Italy spokesman Valerio Di Bussolo said the company had "no prejudice against religion".

"We sell furniture and typical products from Scandinavia like meatballs and herring, and Christmas tree decorations which come from Northern Europe, rather than Nativity scenes which are more of a southern European tradition," he told Reuters.

IKEA, the world's largest furniture retailer, plans to open its 13th outlet in Italy next year. Its stores in the country had 35 million visitors in the year to August.

It is not the only shop in Italy not to sell Nativity scenes. Department store chain Rinascente said some branches had stopped stocking them simply because they do not sell well.

The real trouble with reality is that there's no background music.

I think those senators are suffering from a serious brain deficiency.  What a clueless idea.
Thousands of years ago cats were worshipped.  They have not forgotten.

P.C.

Stuff just gets crazier and crazier.  Even if the nativity story were a part of Scandinavian tradition, how would that make them obligated to sell them in their stores.

It's probably an attention-getting device to keep them in the public eye.

You're probably right Kitten.  If you can't say something intelligent, say something outrageous.  That's one way to draw attention for sure.

Here's an idea. Keep the relgious symbols on that religions property! Oh wow what a concept!
We have rules for everything else.  If you want religous symbols where them at your place of worship and if you want to put up something put it up at your place of worship.

It goes across every religion. If you want to wear a cross wear it when you go to church then put it away when you get home.  If you want to wear a burka wear it at the mosque thereby showing respect to Allah or whatever you believe but take it off when you leave the place of worship.  Same goes for yamicas where them at the synagogue but when you leave please take it off.

Its that too hard to grasp?
Thats the have your cake and eat it too law! You get to wear your religious symbols and do your religious duties and then once you leave the place of worship you become a commoner.

Thats always been the case in my family. I'm from a family of pastors and the instant they leave the church they leave in there black of course but they take the collar off.

Speaking of Nativity scenes, does anyone remember the episode of Curb

  making lewd comments about "Mary"?
