More rain for B.C., residents in boil-water battle

Last Updated: Monday, November 20, 2006 | 5:26 AM PT
Vancouver-area residents braced for more rain on Monday as a boil-water advisory remained in effect, prompting some people to start hoarding bottled water.

[BLOCKQUOTE class=photo style="WIDTH: 200px"]Tap water should be boiled and cooled, or bottled water should be used, before brushing teeth in many B.C. areas.

The forecast called for 10 to 15 millimetres during the day and another 10 to 15 mm in the evening.

The advisory is still in effect for Vancouver, Burnaby and the North Shore, affecting about one million people.

Thousands of residents in Port Alberni, Parksville and Chemainus on Vancouver Island are also living with boil-water advisories.

Affected residents are advised to use bottled water or boil tap water for a full minute before drinking, brushing teeth or washing food. Water should be boiled and allowed to cool before being put in another container or refrigerated.

Moolah!

I'm curious about dishwashing - esp. those items you don't put in the dishwasher so you wash them by hand...

Let's say it's a delicate bowl or some appliance component: Does the bacteria survive after rinsing and you let it dry overnight on the counter turned upside down at an angle?

there really isnt anything wrong with the water other than a little bit of mud. ive been using tap water to brush my teeth and so far im still good. boiling the water does get rid of the mud.

I've got some pretty dumb stories of me and dirty water.  Water came back on once at my house nobody told me that it would be bad for a couple days. I took a shower oops! lol.

Stay safe everyone. Who knows whats in it. Don't want you guys getting sick.

Even if they say certain parts of the lower mainland is okay I'd still boil water until everyone is out of the clear. To me it seems odd that one suburb is okay but the town next to it isn't. Oh well.

Damn right there! We're tough as nails.

Ray of sunshine at the end of the tunnel. The news said the boil water advisory might be lifted for all parts of BC come Thursday. Fingers crossed everyone!

On another note, beware of salads as well unless you watch them in your own home.

Ppl are insane. Buying bottle water like there's no tommorrow. Just went to Save-On Foods and literally everyone with a buggy were buying bottles left and right.

Forget investing in gold, buy water stock instead.

You know, Im surprised that hardware stores arent advertising these like crazy and stores arent renting out portable units to businesses that rely on water.

Reverse Osmosis units ( Called RO for short). They can take brackish water with lots of contamination chemical and particulate wise and clean it up. We use them to make potable water on ships from seawater or in some cases from the fresh water we get from shore.

The link is for an undersink unit. Ive been thinking about getting one for a while. It doesnt have the capability for saltwater, but it will work with brackish water like what we have.

If you boil the water and put it through a Brita it should come out quite clean.
Thousands of years ago cats were worshipped.  They have not forgotten.

Water from reservoirs go thru series of filtration and treatment processes before piped to homes.  It doesn't make sense that muddy rainwater runoffs into reservoirs caused the contamination..........more likely comtamination occurred after the water has been treated.

Well, you look at the Maritimes with the snow.

Quebec with the Ice Storm.

Ontario with power crunches.

The prairies with the flooding and/or drought.

BC with the forest fires and now a water crisis.

Canada is a beautiful place full of hard working people, we need to stick together.
