 "C".

In Nelson's time press gangs would buy unwitting sailors  a drink and at the bottom of the tankard was a shilling coin. If the (unwitting) recruit drank all the beer he was said to have "accepted the shilling payment" for service on one of the Royal Navy ships. This was called 'Taking the kings shilling' and thus tankards came to have clear bases so revellers could lift it up to see if they were signing up to life at sea before drinking.

The real trouble with reality is that there's no background music.

[P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 46.3pt 0pt 0cm"]If you hold the King's shilling (coin) in your hand that means that you have just signed a contract to join the King's Navy. Later on all tankards were made with clear bottoms, to enable the guy to easily see the coin....Although when you are drunk out of your skull...I shouldn't think you could see or think clearly anyway..lol

I wonder what the present day equivalent would be - now that there's neither King nor shilling?

What, no Queen ?
Where did she go ?

The present day equivalent would be turning 18 and being required to register with Selective Service. If only avoiding it could be as easy as checking the bottom of your glass.
...religion has made some contributions to civilization. It helped in the early days to fix the calendar, and it caused Egyptian priests to chronicle ecplipses with such care that in time they were able to predict them. These two services I am prepared to acknowledge, but I do not know of any others

Gopher

Sorry, Mutilated Mind, I meant no king!!!! I'll alter it on the original.
