There's a joke in there somewhere, I guarantee it....

[/h3] [blockquote]One of Andrew Sullivan's readers, an American in Beirut, reported to Sullivan that the U.S. government's offer to evacuate Americans to protect them from the Israeli blitz comes with a price tag: "They are finally getting everything together today, but they dropped a little surprise: they are going to be billing us for giving us emergency transport to Cyprus, and then basically dropping us off on our own to get commercial flights back to the US. Most other goverrnments evacuating people here are actually flying them back to their home country without cost. But not the USG." The real trouble with reality is that there's no background music.

The government is treating them like some people are treating the lebanese canadians on other boards by saying they aren't really Canadians if they live abroad. Well the american government feels the same way aparently about over seas nationals.

From reading the posts it sure appears some of these idiots believe there are different levels of citizenship

Yeah I've heard that on both sides of the border. Its not just a Globe and Mail and DV thing.

Conservative talk radio in this area is a buzz with the "they are not really americans if they live overseas, blah blah blah". What the idiots fail to realise was before the bombings Beirut was on the comeback as the "Monaco of the East" after years of civil war.  And then as one Israeli offical put it "we're going to set them back 20 years". Well Israel you just did that.
