Berkeley council passes impeachment resolution
Carolyn Jones, Chronicle Staff Writer
Wednesday, June 28, 2006

With overwhelming support from Berkeley residents, the Berkeley City Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday night to be the first jurisdiction in the United States to let the public vote for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

The measure will appear on the Nov. 7 ballot, at a cost of about $10,000.

Among those who urged the council to approve the initiative were peace activists Cindy Sheehan and Daniel Ellsberg, as well as 500 Berkeley residents who sent supportive e-mails to City Hall. Only three residents said they were against the idea.

The council agreed to drop a provision that would have set up a task force of Berkeley residents to monitor the President and Vice President.

For thou art with me; thy cream and thy sugar they comfort me
Thou preparest a carafe before me in the presence of Juan Valdez
Thou anointest my day with pep; my mug runneth over
Surely richness and taste shall follow me all the days of my life
And I will dwell in the house of coffee forever.

So what will these actually do?
"We can't stop here. This is bat country."

Absolutely nothing.
Why do you ask?

On the serious tip, as a Berkeley native I'm proud to see my home town once again on the vanguard of progressive activism, even if their actions are largely symbolic.

Yeah and I can hear it now "crazy california liberals out of step with the rest of the country" speak coming from the right wing radio hacks.
"We can't stop here. This is bat country."

LOL. Absolutely. But as George Clooney said, sometimes it's good to be out of step with the mainstream. Especially when the mainstream are a bunch of ignorant zombies.

Democracy only works when the populace is aware and engaged, which is why our system is broken.

Broken? Its been broken for years.  Somebody some day is going to have to end this autocratic system some way or another either by switching to a french republic style government.

(where you still vote for president but the country would be run parliamentary westminister. Because the big complaint about the westminister system is that you don't get to vote for the PM unless you live in the leaders district or riding.  There would still be a PM and he would run the Parliament.  You could keep the senate.)

Or the simpler way would be to open up the federal system and allow more parties and ideas.

Have a right wing group that doesn't want to have seperation between church and state. i.e. evangelicals

Have a right of centre group conservatives, who would have conservative values

Have a centre to right to moderate group made up of republicans so they could actually go back to what they actually stand for: Libertarianism

Have the dems stay liberal

Then have a social democratic group i.e. a labour/socialist/liberal libertarian/liberal group:

Examples in real world would be:

the right wing group: BNP (Britian) fascist

Right of Centre: Conservative (Canada), Conservative (Britian)

Moderate: Can't think of a moderate political group, which is actually sad.

Left of Centre: Liberal (Canada), Labour (Britian)

Left: SDP (Germany), NDP (Canada)
